The Wand Company TOS Tricorder is coming!

Any chance that you could make these accurate straps to the original Tricorder (doubled-over leatherette with double stitching) vs the inaccurate ones that we have been offered for years (non-doubled-over straps with parallel stitching to “simulate” an original strap)?

Agreed. You can already easily find real leather strapping that is pretty identical to what TWC included, but truly accurate strapping, even the black on one side, raw on the other, with the correct texture is pretty difficult to find.

When’s a rough ETA for your leather strap? I’m curious about the fit for the 3/4 width and thickness since it’s a doubled over strap….I think.

That looks good!…and if I’m seeing your pics correctly…..you’ve chosen the folded edge facing forward. I would have chosen the same ;)

Hmmm, I’m still going to stick with the roughness of Season 1 leather (1 black finished side and 1 natural color rawhide backside and edges) and at the 3/4 (19mm) size.

Natural leather no matter what color will always look better than leatherette, pleather, pu leather, bonded leather, etc etc. imo. Fake leather will always look like fake leather.

You made a good choice for what you got as long as your happy :)
If you can't find one with the rawhide (nubuck) colour you're looking for consider buying nubuck dye.

Here’s some ingenuity…..from a member back in 2015…

Star Trek TOS scratch build Tricorder

Btw it appears he is using a single layer leather strap (doesn’t look fake imo) with the double stitching.

The build is Fantastic……an interesting feature is a motorized jewelarama….WOW!

That’s a good idea!

I would have to prep by tape off the sides and backside (don't want the dye to bleed onto the rawhide sides and backside) and then hand dye with black, the smooth side. Could be Easy Peasy and cheap $$ :)

Thanks

I think the idea was to go with a genuine leather one-piece strap with stitching... though I guess we could look at doing the two-layer leatherette one as well, if there was enough interest. But to replace a fake leather strap with another fake leather strap seems to have less appeal.

Well, I’m thinking about those of us who have Tricorder replicas we have built, over the years, vs. just the Wand. There are a lot of replicas out there that are lacking an “accurate” strap…

Perhaps 3 versions of the strap could be offered?

Season One Wah Heroes (in the past, offerings of this version of the strap have been way too thick):

For anyone still waiting to order one, here you go. Act fast.

Is this the gap left by using 5/8 instead of the original 3/4 (19mm)? We know you didn’t notice the 3/4 offering by the same seller….however we are beyond that now….:)
Yes, there’s a slight gap in the slot using the 5/8” strap.

but you go on to say. “I think the 3/4” would be noticeably different.”…..”noticeably different”… How so?
That was definitely a mis-statement by me. The original strap (as measured by my vintage caliper) is 18mm… hardly noticeable difference from 19mm (3/4 inch).

Yeah, my handy-dandy-super-accurate-cheap-Chinese caliper confirms the slot is exactly 3/4". But I'm a glutton for punishment, so I'm going to order the 3/4" strap. Watch this space, I'm likely to regret it. :p

Well there you go, same price, $415. For all the rending of cloth, gnashing of teeth, and outright bawling about the tariffs, the uptick in price isn't very much after all. And now there will be much better availability till they truly run out... and then maybe we can hope for another run? Film at 11...

And people on FB are loosing their minds because they’re shipping August 18th and not right away.
