The Vault 53 Issue Pipboy 3000 COMPLETE 4/19/14

Hey there kiddos, The dick is here to show you the progress of his Pipboy! A few months back I had started a thread on the costume replica board on my Vault Dweller suit progress. Progress on that as been SLOW. Found I had to get a different suit because the one I got didn't fit and I just learned a few days ago Bethesda actually released an official Vault 101 Jumpsuit. Kinda took the wind outta my sails a bit.

HOWEVER! I had also bought this little beauty from Skruffy!
CAM00020.jpg

After looking around at others' Pipboys, I found one that looked like the right idea. I know Skruffy came up with the domed screen idea, but this kld took took it one step beyond.

Okay, so a digital picture frame is a good idea. Know what's better? A digital picture frame that plays video, too!
$_57.JPG

This frame is a Sungale 3.5" frame with video playback capability. I knew I wanted a custom setup, and if there's anything that annoys me more is not getting a clear screen. I know a lot of people use that one guy's video of the radio and status screens for their iPhones looped forever, but I feel like I'm being lazy by using someone elses work. Granted, i may borrow ideas, but I also try to enhance them where possible. So, I rebuilt each screen in GIMP with my color of choice, my character's stats, name, and custom locations. These are just a few of those screens.
pipboy-stat-status.pngpipboy-item-apperal-01.PNGpipboy-stat-skill-repair.png

Those who are fans of The Spoony Experiment see the obvious easter egg in the Items screen. Tee Hee!

After I washed them through a few editing programs, I get my effects.

Now it's time I get this stuff together. Or should I say, apart?
$_57 (1).JPGCAM00022.jpg

The cool thing about this frame is it has an internal battery on it. It kinda sucks because the battery only has so much life in it, but I working out a way to get a cell phone backup battery into this thing so I can increase the life in it. Nice thing the USB port can also charge the device!

At this point in the build process, I was trying to remove the screen from the control board, but seeing I'm a bit excitable, I pulled too hard and ripped the ribbon cable that powered the screen. D'Oh! :facepalm Luckily, I had the part number for it and I ordered 3 new screens. Because, you know, I'm a bit of a klutz. Might as well prepare for it, you know? :lol

After waiting a few weeks and getting the screens, it was time for the fit. I had already cut down as much of the control board as possible to make it fit into the shell, but now I had to trim the INSIDE of the shell. I also had to grind down the slide viewer lens I was using for the CRT screen effect using my dremel. Like a clown, though, I forgot to take pictures of all those processes. Again: D"Oh!

Nevertheless, I managed to not screw it up too bad and I was left with this.
CAM00049.jpg

The bad part about this lens is it's just a hair short on the sides, As you can most likely see, I put electrical tape on the sides to act as a screen bezel to not only cover the gaps on the sides, but to cover some of the grind marks of the work done to the lens. Otherwise, the screen fits nice and snug into the window of the Pipboy shell. As you can also see, I took the time to grind out the "Stat Item Data" lights and put the covers in. They're not permanently attached yet, I just wanted to make sure they fit.

Once I was able to get the screen and control board in, I went to work on the speaker grill and carefully cut the knob off.
FB_IMG_13951889747196765.jpgFB_IMG_13951889827457136.jpg

That was a scary thing to do. I mean, I know I'm good, but my hand isn't that steady. Remember: I ripped a ribbon cable.

After cutting the knob off and grinding down the inside under it, I found this 5-point contact switch at Rat Shack that would be perfect for controlling the picture frame functions. It has one contact for each direction (Up, Down, Ect) and if you press directly down on the button, it activates the 5th contact which is perfect for the "OK" button. It's small and it fits just right on the knob!
FB_IMG_13951890278486651.jpg

And that's where I'm at. I also got the handplate option from Skruffy, so what I'm going to do with that is I'm going to install a rotary switch in the handplate to control the "Stat Item Data" lights. I'll have to hide the ribbon cable going to the Pipboy with the glove, but I'll have to figure that out later.

So what ya think, Kids? Am I doing okay so far?

Re: The Vault 53 Issue Pipboy 3000 WIP

That looks great so far! I may have to get one of these soon. Every build I see is wearing away my SW only policy. I keep thinking there has to be a way to add a little dial where the RAD meter is. There has to be a way to make a needle on there that would bounce around a little like low level radiation in the game.

Re: The Vault 53 Issue Pipboy 3000 WIP

Looking awesome!
Even cooler that you're actually rigging up the display electronics yourself instead of just doing another "phone case" Pip-Boy.

Makes me want to make a new one myself... scratch built one years ago (my first try at a replica) out of a cereal box and some odds and ends and had a backlit paper screen.

The rad needle twitch would be cool to implement... a non-arduino approach that comes to mind is maybe... using magnets? Like a compass needle? No idea if you could get the "twitch" effect right but it could be worth experimenting with.
Anyway, great build! Looking forward to future updates. : )

I guarantee anything you make is better than the official stuff that bethesda okays, most game merchandise is. You can't go wrong with a skruffy pipboy.

Re: The Vault 53 Issue Pipboy 3000 WIP

Looks good, but what is a pipboy? Where's it from?

Re: The Vault 53 Issue Pipboy 3000 WIP

I've always wanted to make one of these. Loving the digital picture frame idea!

Hey, that's some good thinkin', boys! I sure as hell didn't think about adding a "working" meter to it. Might look into the compass idea. I actually have a mini compass that could fit into the meter space with some reengineering.

I guarantee anything you make is better than the official stuff that bethesda okays, most game merchandise is.

Doesn't change that it took the wind from my sails. Considering I have to make my own stuff, idiots are going to ask if I bought it from their store. Happened with the Ghostbuster equipment I built.

Looks good, but what is a pipboy? Where's it from?

It's from a video game series called Fallout. This particular model is the 3000 which appears in Fallout 3 and Fallout New Vegas. It's a wrist mounted device your character wears and it's used to track your inventory, locations, information, and stats. If you've played D&D, it's kinda like your character sheet in digital form.

Thanks for the support guys! I got a ways to go on this project, but it's nice to know I got some vets backing me on this. Let's rock this thing!

Re: The Vault 53 Issue Pipboy 3000 WIP

D&D wow forgot about that, means we are about the same age, have not played video games since centipede but i heard of fallout ;) hey your build looks great!, is this something yoi are going to wear to a convention?

Re: The Vault 53 Issue Pipboy 3000 WIP

I doubt we are. I'm not even 30 yet. A metric crapton of people still play D&D, even though I hear it's progressively gotten worse over the decades. I don't play it, personally, but I get the idea. I am planning to take this piece to a convention or two when I feel like it, but that's only to say I get my suit done, too.

Re: The Vault 53 Issue Pipboy 3000 WIP

Just wanted to let you know that I put my Pipboy construction project on hold because of this thread. I was originally planning on going the basic "lights and sounds" route, but when I saw your screen change/knob idea I changed my mind. Keep up the good work. I'll be watching.

Re: The Vault 53 Issue Pipboy 3000 WIP

Been a couple of weeks since I updated. Been making slow progress on the Pipboy seeing my personal life has been getting in the damn way. This is what happens when you're job hunting. :( Oh, well. At least I bought all my parts ahead of time. To start, I got to work replacing the molded screws. Some of the pictures are blurry. I'm sorta camera retarded.

1797560_10201857352704007_152843436_n.jpg1969234_10201857352944013_939117549_n.jpg

After that, I got the brilliant idea to turn the screws into tact switches. Again, because I spend more of my time building rather than documenting, I didn't get pictures of my process grinding out the shell for the switches. The idea was I use tact switches to control the digital picture frame, but I make it inconspicuous by hiding them under the screws on the face of the Pipboy. Same with the power switch, all I have to do it run the leads into the buttons on the picture frame and viola! Additional control!

It finally got warm enough out here in Chiberia for me to paint the shell. I even happened to find a good paint that would be good as a base.

Long before I got ahold of Skruffy, I found this at Wal-Fart on clearance and for some reason I bought it because it reminded me of a Pipboy finish from New Vegas. I am NEVER going to find this stuff in a store again. Might as well document this. Looks rather nice. Now I need to get some acrylic black, brown, and green to dirty it.

After that, I started work on the Hand Plate...
1538871_10201880514923048_2011280920_n.jpg1903986_10201880515163054_360662953_n.jpg1926751_10201880508682892_1024426991_n.jpg10006186_10201881052256481_639289465_n.jpg

A few tiny holes, a HUGE one, and a rotary switch later, the plate is ready for paint and wiring. The power LED on the picture frame is going to power the "STAT ITEM DATA" lights, and the rotary switch will allow me to switch which light will be lit. I had to modify the provided dial quite a bit to get it low enough to the plate to cover the switch. Like a bonehead, though, I almost drilled clean through the knob, so there's a little bit of breakage on the top of the knob. I need to get some epoxy putty and fix the boo-boo before I paint.

I also got around to drilling out the bottom of the sub-menu knob and put the 5-point switch knob into it.
10171143_10201881863276756_1394109385_n.jpg

Then I broke it. :facepalm SON-OF-A...!

The red knob thing broke off at the latch tabs when I was test fitting it. I didn't get a picture of this, but I found out a good way to fix it. I had some large hand rivets lying around, so I cut one short and fitted it to the shaft of the switch. Gotta glue it together, but it'll be stronger than it was before. I'll get some pictures later when and if I remember.

The last thing I did was start some more electronic work. The picture frame I'm using has an internal battery on it, but it kinda sucks. It only has so much life in it because the battery is so small. So, I took an old, kinda broken backup battery, fixed the USB port on it, and ran a lead from the switch contacts on the control board to a tact switch so I can hide it under one of the screws
1970360_10201857353104017_242858604_n.jpg

It won't be much, but it should do the job of adding some life to the picture frame when needed.

And that's where I'm at. Next things on the list is fitting the leads and switches to the picture frame, a few more coats of paint, installing the hinge, making a clasping system to close it, wiring the hand plate, and finally installing all this crap into the shell. Oh, and getting a good speaker and working on the status screen video. Almost forgot.

Re: The Vault 53 Issue Pipboy 3000 WIP update 4/6/14

Amazing work, love all the attention to detail. Can't wait to see the finished piece :)

Re: The Vault 53 Issue Pipboy 3000 WIP update 4/9/14

Alrighty, time to defibrillate this party!

To start, I painted the knobs.
10002910_10201898447091341_5266289615892933659_n.jpg

Nice and flat. No offense to the female Propers out there, but this isn't how I like my women. I know, I'm a *******.

Anyway, I finished my final base coat on the hand plate.
10155162_10201898447371348_7024311424813249592_n.jpg

And now comes the layers of weathering. I started off by spraying extremely light dustings of black, then I took some silver paint and an acid brush and dry brushed the high spots After that, I applied another dusting of black.
1208824_10201898533213494_7108278996131330215_n.jpg10014560_10201898532253470_2155371824729257312_n.jpg10169265_10201898533013489_777242281369574170_n.jpg10250287_10201898532653480_6868494827222553074_n.jpg10013299_10201898983904761_8946449357884622838_n.jpg10177852_10201898532013464_1390545711579650796_n.jpg

Once I brought the shell back in and painted up the detains I grabbed some leftover black paint, mixed it with alcohol, and got another acid brush. I washed over the shell making sure to get all the cracks and low spots. After the paint sat for about 20 seconds, I wiped up the excess paint the best a lazy person could giving it that dirt-in-the-cracks look.

What? It's not like cleanliness is top priority in the Fallout Universe, why should I be **** n' Span?

And yes, I was watching, "Coach" on Netflix. Bite me.

Once the shell dried, I started installing the bulk of the electronics.
1451412_10201906307767853_228903238320537700_n.jpg10014608_10201907056346567_5966882008198065910_n.jpg

This took 6. F@#&ing.Hours. Glue this, move that, adjust this, disconnect that. Put this in this way, oh wait, I have to connect this first. Yes, it's done, oh crap, I forgot this, take it apart, do it again. Put your right foot in, take it out, shake it all about... Freaking. Annoying. I was so annoyed with this process I never got the pictures I promised showing how I installed the additional switches under the screws. I was so irritated. I'm thinking of doing a video of the finished product so I can showcase that ability, but for now, I still have work to do.

As you can tell, the top part of the shell is mostly done. I need a speaker and a glove still. Once I get those in and everything is wired, I'll get the clasping mech finished up. Beyond that is just video files, but I'll be a few hours work, so I can work on that any time.

With that being said, I'm gonna take my happy ass to the store for my suit.

Re: The Vault 53 Issue Pipboy 3000 COMPLETE! 4/19/14

The Pipboy is completely finished! Now that everything is installed and working properly, I have a little demo video for all of you!

Why was this called the "Vault 53 issue Pipboy"? Well, I wanted to make a scenario where 53 - which in the Fallout Bible states has the misfortune to have it's equipment (although repairable) constantly break - is located just outside the city of Chicago in neighboring Joliet, Il. The Vault itself would be located under the Old Joliet Prison mostly because Joliet has a huge limestone deposit beneath it. Under the prison was a prime spot. With the Fallout Universe's rate of crime increase before the war the prison was reactivated in 2051, allowing renovations and the construction of the Vault to commence. I picked 53 particularly because in real life I am a repairman and engineer by nature. Seemed like a good fit for my personality.

Naturally, since the city of Chicago itself is just a city riddled with the color blue, I chose blue for the interface of the Pipboy, and Blues music as the genre of music. All era appropriate.
