The Smugglers Room - Star Wars Themed Prop & Rec Room

Re: The Smugglers Room - I've taken a slight "HIC" Detour!

What an amazing build. Facebook page is liked and off to go have a look there now.

Re: The Smugglers Room - I've taken a slight "HIC" Detour!

So I put in a full day today on the HIC portion of my mountain of a project. Things were going pretty good until i realized I might be using the wrong type of Elmers glue! I know I had seen a thread where someone had used wood glue with great success, but I am not having that experience. I had read several other threads and always seen the "Elmers" glue used, but I must be an idiot, because I am seeing now that it is the "White" version, like we all had in school.

So, My plan is to let what I have already poured set and harden. Then apply the "white" version. Does that sound about right? Anyone experience this, or have any guidance for me? I really don't want to have to chisel this out or worse, ruin this project.

At any rate, here are some progress shots. i have a bit more work to do on the Han portion of this, bondo work that is. The cast is excellant, but I do have a couple areas that were damaged after it arrived here. nothing too terrible, but they need attention.

I also realize that the side panels need cut in, and that will happen soon. I hated to have to do it after the fact, but i needed to get started this weekend, and I just purchased a volvo piece from Darth Chromer, so that will have to be added later. Not a big deal, thats easy.

So please, if you have any advice for me, I am all ears!

Re: The Smugglers Room - I've taken a slight "HIC" Detour!

I had heard people had good success with joint compount (drywall spackle) to imitate the front of the HIC because it's thick and you can spread it with a wide putty knife to get the same effect as the prop.

Re: The Smugglers Room - I've taken a slight "HIC" Detour!

I had read that as well. Is it worth changing technique in the middle of the build? I liked the pouring method, but I certainly don't want to end up with crap at the end. But I do like the spackle idea as well. color me confused! Thanks for the suggestion James, I will certainly look at some of those examples.

I had this exact same problem with my white glue pour. The solution is to not pour so thick. That way it dries quicker and doesn't "ripple".

No need to restart. Just let this layer dry thoroughly and then continue with thinner coats. Check out my HIC thread for more info. :)

Awesome man, thank you so much. I was pretty stressed! :)

Re: The Smugglers Room - I've taken a slight "HIC" Detour!

I was too! :lol

It turns out in the end, just takes longer.

sweet, it was funny, my wife was standing at the door looking at it and said, "That doesn't look right?" This was a big deal, because of all the things I am working on, this is the one thing she wants in the house. She bought me that cast for Xmas this year, so it MUST be done right. lol

Re: The Smugglers Room - I've taken a slight "HIC" Detour!

Ive seen the wood glue method as well, and it worked out great. Spackle sounds like a great idea, and its easy to work with.

WHOA! Just saw this! How's the glue situation? Have you considered just scraping the surface and starting over? You're going to be covering the area with other material so it's no biggie if the surface isn't perfect????

LOOKS AWESOME! :)

As it turns out guys, the glue set up pretty nicely. So there isn't really any need to start over or panic:) I am going to change up the method going forward, but the ripples are all gone and I should be back on track soon.

Re: The Smugglers Room - I've taken a slight "HIC" Detour!

I know man, I've read a half dozen posts as to angled or not to angel. It's my understanding that Empire had straight sides and ROTJ had the angled. Am I correct about that? I thought I was? At any rate, I decided to go straight thinking I wanted an Empire version. So If I'm wrong, I'm going to have to make te box again!!!!

Both are angled.

THose look like they're all from ESB...

Sorry for any confusion. I was pointing out that when he said "It's my understanding that Empire had straight sides and..." that they were angled, not straight.
