The OT stunt lightsaber blades research thread

The outer shell of the old hmp CX-4 antenna is made of duroplast. If I am informed correctly, they used some some sort of cotton fabric for the inlay, not glass fiber. Hence the darker color, which can be seen on the more damaged stunt blades. The antennas were painted with an UV-resistant white paint for protection. Some of the ESB stunt blades were even covered in 3M reflective material.

Looks like I'm gonna buy a current model myself. Hopefully the inner materials aren't harder to remove than the vintage antennas

I have just bought a second old CX-4 from a boat owner here in Germany - it‘s difficult to duel with just one lightsaber blade. I‘ll start working on the metal sleeve and ring (some still call it „nipple“) soon to mount it on the 8mm metal rod of my stunt lightsaber.

I'm new to this. Why would you remove the inner materials? To get an LED in there?
You would have to cut off the metal base of the antenna first. Inside the rod there are multiple „layers“: a thin antenna cable inside a thin white tube, encased in a softer black material, protected by the outer duroplast shell. In order to mount the antenna „blade“ on a stunt lightsaber handle, one would have to hollow out the antenna rod at the thicker end for about two to three inches, leaving just the outer duroplast shell. Then you insert a metal sleeve which slides over the metal rod of your stunt lightsaber handle and secure it with grub screws.

Awesome! Would love to see how these hold up in dueling

So it slides over this brass bit with the grub screws holding it?

Just bought it myself (220 USD shipped after taxes and conversion; so a bit steep a price just to cut up!) and am gonna try my hand at altering it for a V3 stunt of my own and see how that turns out. I'll update as I go.

2Cell, that's an entirely different conversation. As far as I know, the antennae would slip over a rod or would just be secured into the solid plug that was used to secure the set up in the Graflex used for stunt fencing. You should hit up thd9791 for more info. He's got an entire thread dedicated to stunt Graflex sabers used in the OT.

Is that a new one you bought you mean?

Yes, from the link you provided. It seems to be fairly similar to the old ones, just updated with modern advancements in materials. It shouldn't be too off in terms of modifying and creating similar results.

On a related note, who's gonna hunt down the short antenna used for the Yuma stunt? ;)

No, that‘s an unmodified Graflex 3-cell or replica of it. Those were used as belt hangers or hand-held props without any physical blades attached to it (with one exception at the Wampa cave in ESB propably). The stunt lightsaber hilts were modified in a way that the inner elements have been removed, and a solid metal core was inserted and fixed to the outer Graflex shell using some strong screws. In the center of the metal core was a metal rod sticking out of the handle for about two or three inches, the stunt blades slid over the rod and were secured with grub screws. I‘m on my wife‘s iPad atm and can‘t post pics unfortunately. Tom, can you chime in, please?

Holy...that‘s expensive. Is that a brand new one? Shouldn‘t Cost more than 100 bucks though. Looks like prices are exploding aready - pretty common among STW used real world items...

2Cell, the props used for dueling in ESB and RoTJ were gutted flashes, which held a aluminum core, where there was a rod mounted into the core. Which we now refer to as the “Delmonte core” since Tom is the leader is research of this core setup.

The blade which looks like was a antenna of some kind, was modified to slip over and lock onto the rod sticking out of the core

This is what production used for dueling in ESB and RoTJ

Here is the core I design after toms setup

Many flashes were modified with cores, including blank pipes they dressed up to look like a graflex

You have to check out tom’s thread, he has done a ton of research on the core

Yep, bought new from the site 2Cell linked, bluesat. It's English, was formerly HMP, and the materials and specs are still relatively the same from what I could gather from your vintage antennae. It's currently 97 GBP on their site and to get it shipped to where I am in the US (middle amercia), and after the conversion, turned out to be a pretty pricey item.

I look forward to the reckless and silly man that starts a run of replica of these things for cheaper on this site in future.

That's looking real good Vadermania. Great work ! 18mm at the base eh ? That's just exactly what I made this blade via scaling & has puzzled me since I got involved with this stuff as ANH blades I usually get around 16mm (5/8"). So it's looking like this has already been replaced for these promo pic's.
