The OT stunt lightsaber blades research thread

Have you seen my post #171 pg9 ?

Just re read it. It could very well be graphite or carbon fiber. I've had some carbon fiber stunt blades and I've just never seen them flex to that degree with out cracking or breaking flexible but much more stiff say a fiberglass rod or tube. I could be completely wrong about this. Had anyone had carbon fiber or graphite flex like this with out breaking?

shared by gus lopez, pics from the upcoming narrative museum.

Pipe stunt and old blades are there.

Can not wait ...

These are from Lucas personal collection right? And not the lucasfilm archives?

I am probably wrong, but was always confused because we heard 2 stories. One what’s in the archives today now belongs to Disney, but Lucas had his own personal collection

Any truth to this?

it seems a little obvious, but I want to rule out that ROTJ didn't upgrade to PVC (considering the ability to flex and it being a cheap plumbing thing) Hell, maybe it didn't hold up to the set screws used to keep it in place.

Will be buying a length of, for example, 3/4" PVC or something - cutting it in half - and swordfighting soon

Possible materials for consideration
1. Fishing poles
2. Antennas
3.ski/ hiking poles
4. custom made for production( i doubt this one)

I'd add fiber glass ram rod (blank). I bought a 1/2" one a long time ago from Dixie Gun Works. Can't remember if they did thicker ones but they'd have bought them in from somewhere else probably as plain rod. I still have it but not willing to try & break it.

Are they solid rods or hollow? I'm starting to wonder if some solid rods were used.

That is an incredibly unique and clever route. Completely caught me off guard

they all look to be too skinny but I'll keep looking

from a site about martial arts

"Anyone who has ever spent any time around boats or surfboards knows to stay away from fiberglass. Exterior layers of the material crack when forced to flex."

They also agreed carbon fiber splinters and cracks easily.

Interesting comment here:

"Polyoxymethylene (aka Delrin, acetal, polyacetal, and polyformaldehyde) and other similarly dense thermoplastics can be used for many substitute training weapons including, but not limited to (in my personal experience), bokken, bo, jo, hanbo, training knives, jitte, kunai, and training shuriken (with thin plates)."

(Are there good alternatives to wood for weapons?)

Derlin could be one possible candidate. Any one know how this material performs?

Solid. I'll dig 'em out later, they're very flexible & don't surface crack. I think the martial arts guy's are talking more swords & stuff as I only recognise the Bo staff as pole like. My rod's look extruded & not like boat hulls etc. I don't think they be selling 'em for ram rods if prone to splintering, think of the law suites!

Delrin is nice to machine but I've only used shortish lengths. My feeling is they'd snap under that amount of abuse but just my estimate. Slippery too, makes good bearing material - would defo need mechanical fixing in a saber (not glue).

Propdude showed me a clip from ESB that shows the ESB blades flexing as well. one sec.

Yep, I found it in a second video.
you can see the blades vibrate when struck together on Dagobah

6:30
catwalk scene, after the first round of blows, second round you can see the blades wiggle when struck together.

Taken one right after the other

Also, I think that blade on dagobah came out of the hilt, instead of breaking

it completely spun around after hitting DVs helmet
