12/28/2007 update - On Jan 1, we'll be shutting down the old BBC website for good! We've already made the move to the new location at http://www.imperial-fleet.com/BBC/community

Due to the number of SPAM accounts we’ve been getting every day for the last year, we are temporarily disabling the BBC’s registration page, effective Wednesday, December 12, 2007. I’m sorry for any inconvenience this may cause---this will not affect current members in any way.

Additionally, just to give everyone a heads-up, the BBC will be moving to a new board & URL very soon—I’ll post more info once we’re ready to start the process. This move will give us better security against SPAM and hacks, and provide a more user-friendly board for our members.

Feel free to post with any questions or concerns.

Thanks,
Brian

UPDATE 12/16/2007
Well, it’s official…the BBC is moving to a new board and new URL!

http://www.imperial-fleet.com/BBC/community/index.php

Due to the extensive modifications TK1215 makes to our forum software, we’re unable to transfer the database from here to the new place. That means everyone will have to register new accounts---I apologize for the inconvenience, but that’s just the way things are. Also, please use the same username to help avoid confusion.

I’ll start a new thread over there dedicated to “post counts” maintenance—once your account’s active, check your post count at the old place and post it in the thread so I can get it updated. (The update will get done eventually, as it’s not a top priority right now;) )

We’re also going to need everyone’s help getting threads moved/reposted. On Wednesday 12/19, I’ll redo the forum permissions so that no posting will be allowed at the old forum! You will still be able to edit your posts, however. The BBC staff will be moving/archiving older threads, but it’s going to be a lot of work—any help you can give us by reposting your own threads will be greatly appreciated.

Ideally, we’d like to have everything done by January 1, but that’s not set in stone. We want to nuke the old site ASAP, so there will come a time when we’ll just have to say, “Enough is enough” and sacrifice threads. Once we determine a final date for deletion, we’ll give advance notice so if there are any remaining threads you’d like to see transferred, you can let us know and we’ll do our best to move them.

I realize this is going to be a real PIA, but the new board’s software is worth it! We’ll have better security & safeguards, as well as more user friendly features—not to mention a very nifty poll system that will finally offer us a multiple vote set up for the blaster contest :D

For now, the new BBC layout will remain (basically) the same as our old board. Once the move is over and things have settled down, I’m working on some ideas I hope will expand what we have to offer, and make it a more enjoyable and informative place to visit. But it’s the membership that make a forum board a real community, and you guys are have made the BBC the wonderful place it is!

Once again, please post any questions & comments here.

Re: The Blaster Builders Club is moving!

What software are you using? There should be no reason these days to lose a whole dtabase worth of info; most forum software has a migration feature. :confused

Yeah but some companies make it very hard to migrate to a rival provider if not impossible.

Could you not leave the old board up but read only and link to it on the new one so people can read the old threads at least ?
Be a mammoth task copying everything over manually.

Re: The Blaster Builders Club is moving!

What I was told was that between differences in phpBB "versions", as well as all of the modifications made a direct transfer extremely problematic.

I can only accept that explaination as I'm not on the technical end...I mainly just stand around and look pretty ;) :lol

Re: The Blaster Builders Club is moving!

Are you getting new hosting?

I would think most hosts will do the database transfer free for you. Mine did when I went from phpBB 2x to vBulletin. :)

Re: The Blaster Builders Club is moving!

I don't believe we're using a new host, but I'm not the site owner so I don't know.

As I said, what I was told was that it's not "just" the data transfer, but the additional issues involved due to all the software mods.

Re: The Blaster Builders Club is moving!

Unfortunately migration is never simple. We found a couple of moves ago that if you've made any custom changes to the software, it just makes moving harder.

Re: The Blaster Builders Club is moving!

Exactly! And Nick customizes the hell out of the basic php software....
