The Official Boycott Star Wars Bluray thread

I really wonder if terms of the sale included a, "Don't dare touch or alter my existing films in any way" clause.

More likely a clause that says, "I get to re-edit my existing films any time some new or cool technology comes along to let me cram even more crap into every scene." :behave

4 BILLION!! :lol I seriously doubt Disney would fork over that kind of money with GL's ego strings attached to a contract. If disney want's to make a buddy picture called "Jar-jar & Jabba" I'm sure they can, it is their baby now. If the prequals had never been made I would be probobly be upset that GL had turned SW over to the Mouse, but since I got a real good look at Georges "grown-up" veiw of SW, I'm more than happy to give Disney a shot at getting it right. The PT made $$$ for GL, but if they had been done right, they would have produced many more $$$. The current "flopping" of the re-release in 3D shows just how bad they are. How crowded would the theater be if the OT was cleaned and re-released? :D

This article from Bloomberg BusinessWeekly has some good info in it.

How Disney Bought Lucasfilm?and Its Plans for 'Star Wars' - Businessweek

That's a very interesting article; I'd read an excerpt or two from it somewhere else recently.

I have to admit (geek alert...) that I became ever-so-slightly emotional to read the bit about George putting pen to paper on the sales document and finally giving it up. I've been as angry with him over the years about expressing his vision (and not ours) of things as anyone else, and I still have my reservations about various things. But the big picture is that we'd have none of it at all if it hadn't been for him and while it's extremely exciting to think about the future of Star Wars, I can't help but feel melancholy as well that it's a passing-the-torch kind of thing. George Lucas is Star Wars, flaws and all...

Not to totally change the subject (since this is a Star Wars thread) but I wish they'd announce they at least have plans for other LucasArts/Films franchises (i.e. Indiana Jones)

I kind of felt the same way reading that. Almost seems like he had second thoughts. Even though they say he was sure about it.

According to that article as long as they see that Indy can make money they'll do something with it. Though with the big man at Disney leaving in a couple of years who knows what the new guy will do.

Why would he? He always said he wanted HIS versions out and the reason he didn't release the theatrical cuts was because he didn't want to pay the bill. That doesn't read like someone hell bent on keeping them off the street if someone else pays the bill to have it done. All it takes is for Disney and 20th C Fox to come to an agreement on how to do it.

Robert Harris offered to restore the original versions for free and George Lucas refused point blank.

Which is why it's a good daggum thing Lucas doesn't own this stuff anymore.

yes, it is. There is a lot more to George's reasons not to want to restore the original versions. First he said for years that it was impossible because the original negative was cut up for the SE's and no longer existed. When this was proved to be false he started on the whole "too expensive" thing. A new copyright was created for the 1997 SE's. From what i have heard, as they were no longer the original films any percentages originally given to certain cast and crew were altered. He is well know to hold a grudge towards anyone he has fallen out with. As long as the altered films are the only versions available then he doesn't have to pay his ex-wife Marcia the percentage she would be owed for the originals. Dave Prowse still hasn't received any money for ROTJ SE because Lucas claims that it never made a profit. Seriously? He could release the version we got on the bonus DVD only because it was a 1993 laserdisc master so any fees owed would have already have been paid.

I'm familiar with most of that stuff, yeah. And also the vindictive "Screw Marcia" attitude. But I also think that there's a part of him that wants HIS unfettered vision to be what people get, take it or leave it. But hey, whatever. It's all Disney's stuff now. In spite of what some folks think, I rather doubt Disney will be all that concerned with "respecting the rights of the original artist," now that they are the copyright holders (presumably).

Star Wars died after Empire Strikes Back.

That is all.

ROTJ and everything that followed can suck a bag of Richards.

So I finally gave in and bought the Star Wars DVD set.

...oh wait, I lied.

C'mon, Disney. A niche market is still a market...
