The Official Boycott Star Wars Bluray thread

Would it not be fun if Akira kurosawa and everyone else of Lucas "director idols" was alive and did the same thing to every movie george loves.
CG a lot more bandits into The seven samuraji or totally add new scenes...

And colorize them! But seriously you don't need to do that, Kurosawa got all of his film elements right the first time.

To us, he did, but I doubt Kurosawa himself ever believed he attained perfection (remember his irritation toward the Oscars? He said something like 'We should all be trying to make better films instead of standing around congratulating ourselves'). Still, I'd love to see Lucas understand our pain and be subjected to a world in which the theatrical releases of Kurosawa's films were made somehow completely unavailable to him, while cgi-polluted versions took their place...(theatrical versions to remain available to us, of course...)

That cracks me up.
Each time I watch a making of extra with Lucas and Burtt I can see the underlying tension. Burtt wants to make the sounds like music and Lucas wants Williams to do the Music with Burtt keeping well out of that arena.
Burtt is an abstract musician at heart...so you see the dissapointment on his face every time Lucas steers his sound effects away from the musical end of the scale.

Back to the topic...

It wasn't a very musical shouting match, apparently! The version I heard had things being broken and people being 'escorted' to the gates of the Ranch. :eek

Really??? Do you have any idea what happened? What it was all about?

I was always puzzled by a lot of the sound fx in the prequels. There was a predominence of staccatto sounds....the pod racers, the arena creatures, the republic ships etc. Nothing had that organic, creative, believable quality that the OT had.....

Nah, no idea. I can't even vouch for it; that came from friends who worked for a licensee and on AOTC. Nothing first-hand. Kinda hoping someone on here knows more or can correct me, tbh.

I agree with you about the staccato thing. Oddly though the podrace sequence (aside from 'poodoo!') was probably the most Warsy thing in the PT, for me. I quite liked the sound fx for the racers.

Sounds ace, that fight.

Podrace being very Warsy - yeah, especially the build-up to it. Motion letdown on the actual race, though, for me - fast things not moving right, though the crashes and rolling disintegrating engines were great (perfect and justified use of cgi there).

While Mr. Scott was made "Captain of Engineering" (ridiculous) Maybe Ben wanted to be Director of Sound Design....or something......

I always thought of Burtt as one of GL's yes-men....maybe the worm turned a wee bit too late.

I just did a quick Google, and couldn't find anything that actually said why Burtt left Lucasfilm, just that he left. It would be funny if it were because of the DVD release:

George: I want to change this.
Ben: That's stupid.
George: You're fired.

There seems to be a grass roots movement in Alameda.

No not all of them, but the first leaks of the changes were only audio leaks, so several fans did fan dubs with the new audio and uploaded them all over the place...

R2 is hidden in every clip, at least when they show him from the front, when they flip to the view behind him continuity is kinda broken as the opening is much larger... And the frontal close ups with the drastically forced out of focus rocks in the foreground makes me squint...

Thanks. It is the first time I've noticed the symbols on the rocks behind the Tusken Raiders. :lol

.

Yeah, I can just see it. Burtt throws a glass against the wall, while supressing the urge to get his tape recorder out because it made such a great sound, George ducks but is pissed that he can't get Burtt's performance on film to sell in a Blueray extra. George figures out where he would place the motion capture dots as he pushes over his stack of tapes. Bert likes the sound of the tapes hitting the floor but that mic is still on George's side of the room.... George wonders what those tapes wil cost to replace and likewise with Burtt.

He he - very good :)

Burtt left to pursue a directing career.

Interrior of the sound room at Skywalker Ranch.

GEORGE

Look, Ben, no musical sound effects allright! Williams does that.

BURTT

You never let me do any creative sound stuff. See these clanks are musical.

GEORGE

No.

BURTT

Clank , cland , clankety clank?

GEORGE

No.
look you just do the sounds and let me worry about the directing.

BURTT

Directing, is that what you call it, all you do is pick the best parts of other people's hard work.

GEORGE

Oh yeah! If it's so easy why don't you try it, I don't see you directing anything.

BURTT

OK I will then , going out the door to do some directin...yep..don't try and stop me.

GEORGE.

Yeah, you jsut do that, don't let the door hit you on the way out.

Exit Burtt in a huff.
