The Official Boycott Star Wars Bluray thread

It's sort of interesting to notice that the Star Wars blu-rays are becoming a fairly large internet meme, even beyond the scope of the SW fans.

Seriously, this has spawned alot of parody/knockoff etc. videos.

This explains a LOT, not really about the Blu Ray, but why the originals look so bad.

Just for those of you who are cinephiles, videophiles and purists. And those of you wondering what we're all so ticked off about when you say, "Hey, just watch the Laserdisc transfers and be happy!"

Save Star Wars

I think that saying that pathetic refrain of "George Lucas raped my childhood" or any other variation of that rant is quite annoying.

Don't get me wrong, I have been very vocal about my disagreements with Lucas over his changes of the films, and my dislike of his prequel films.

But to go so far as to say that my CHILDHOOD, or my memories growing up were RUINED? That is pathetic.

Star Wars made an important and vital positive impact on my life, but despite Lucas's loss of talent over the years as an artist, it hasn't effected my life experiences.

Nothing can touch those. Especially a filmmaker who I've never even met before, and likely will never meet in my life.

I think that George has the right to do whatever he chooses with his films, but the core issue with fans is that he isn't acknowledging the original trilogy's impact on our world culture, and recognizing the need to preserve that culture for future generations.

Star Wars is very much a product of it's time, and says a lot about the era in which they were released. They need to be restored properly and made available to the public so that future generations can understand WHY these films are so relevant to us.

Seriously. People just like to complain for the sake of complaining it seems.

I saw part of ROTJ at WalMart last night. Looked nice, but not so nice I felt any urge to cave. Some of the TVs were set in a wierd way that it had this home movie/video look, almost like the film stock they use in soap operas. Odd. But it looked great on other TVs there.

Like I said though, not even a tiny urge to cave in. Really wanted one of those new 35 dollar diet FX sabers though :lol

That's probably the motion interpolation setting being jacked up way too high. Common issue with display LCDs in big box stores. That and setting the display to "torch mode" where the colors look cartoony and overly bright.

Of all the problem in ROTJ, never once did I hear someone complain "Gee, I though that door was a little small......"

I think it's hilarious that beneath all the absolute **** Lucas heaped upon this release is the ****ty video transfer from 2004. Y'all paid handsomely for a HD set that Lucas couldn't even be bothered to issue a new transfer for.

But I didn't!

Yep, see the review at the digital bits

Blu-ray Reviews - Star Wars: The Complete Saga

It's fairly common knowledge that the Blu-rays were mastered from the same HD scans that were used for the DVD release back in 2004. That means these transfers are at least 8 years old - very far from state of the art. To make matters worse, those scans were done at near HD resolution - not the 4K, 6K, or even 8K of current negative scans for film restoration and BD release purposes, but essentially 2K (something like1828x1556 for a scope film image), which was eventually exported to 480p for DVD (and later 1080p for Blu-ray). As most of you know, those DVD presentations were rife with visual problems, so the prospects for any quality BD release using these transfers seemed dim. Surprisingly, however, Lucasfilm and Lowry Digital have gone to a great deal of trouble to correct those problems. For one thing, many of the worst color-timing issues of the DVDs have been fixed - not all of them to be sure and not completely, but at least to the point where they're not so egregious. Some of the inconsistencies of the lightsaber coloring have been adjusted too. More of the obvious "garbage" mattes have been removed. Most of the Snow Speeder cockpits in are less see-through. Visual errors large and small in all of the original trilogy films have been corrected. To be fair, there are still flaws in these transfers due to the fact that they're nearly a decade old and were made at such low resolution. These include occasional edge halos, crushed blacks and somewhat oversaturated colors. (For the record, I'm not convinced that the crushed blacks and oversaturated colors are a defect so much as a deliberate choice on Lucas' part. They've been visible in these films since at least 1997, so it's hard to say.) There are also artifacts due to all the digital manipulation work that's been done, including filtering, static grain in select shots, etc. A New Hope is the most "crisp" looking of the three films, as Empire and Jedi were both shot with a deliberately softer look, using atmospheric smoke and fog and more subtle, elaborate lighting than the original film. All three films occasionally look soft in various scenes - or around the edges of the frame - owing to the use of anamorphic lenses. Jedi also has what appears to be a registration problem about halfway through the film (from 54:30 to 58:33, from the Rebels' arrival on Endor to the start of the Speeder Bike chase). It manifests itself as a slight loss of resolution in the image. This is visible in the HD master for cable and satellite broadcasts as well, so it's definitely a problem with the original master - something that might have happened when the films were being scanned. HOWEVER... all that said, there's still plenty of detail in the images, the colors pop and the blacks are nicely dark. I have a strong suspicion that the vast majority of Star Wars fans are going to be pleased with what they see. The fixes to the masters, the greater HD resolution and the high data rates Blu-ray offers combine to really deliver a massive improvement in video quality here from the DVDs. Regardless of the issues that remain, this is BY FAR the best these films have ever looked at home."

If I were him it would really bother me to go from being one of the most beloved filmakers in the world to my own fans wishing I was dead so I couldn't destroy their favorite movies any further... :unsure

Come the F on George. Give us NEW prints and transfers of the original movies...

You wanna clean some stuff up? Fine. You wanna color correct the sabers? SOUNDS GREAT!

Hey, what they did to the AT AT scene with the DVD transfers REALLY helped that transperancy problem... Stuff like that is FINE.

But we want the greedo KILL OR BE KILLED back. That really defined who Solo was. He was a damn spice (drugs) smuggler for a notorious criminal for God sake!!!

Leave out the damn wampa scene (you RUINED a great scene)

And for the love of GOD... "Jedi Rocks" is the worst thing you have ever done. The only good that scene does for SW is make you not hate Jar Jar quite as bad... Talk about RUINING the tension of the moment!!! :sick

And dear God... for all that is good in the world... what made you think that after 30 years we didn't get that in Vaders head as he was watching his son die... that the thought of "no" came into his mind??? SERIOUSLY??? It was VERY understood and a GREAT scene. One of the saving graces of that muppetshow/star wars movie.

Give us our OT back.

Play with the PT all you want... hell it couldn't hurt.

You have lost touch with what was GREAT about these movies, and now we are losing touch with caring... you know what that means???

NO MORE ****ING MONEY YOU ****ING *******!!!! :angry

Anybody wanna 'rent' me their extras? I'll pay you full price in paypal. When I'm done watching them, I'll return them and you refund my money.
