The Official Boycott Star Wars Bluray thread

The petition thing... you never know. It seems to have an effect on politicians now and then. (I'm thinking of some of the successful Avaaz campaigns). When actually confronted with a vast list of actual names, politicians, big companies etc. have actually acted at times to reverse measures they already knew were unpopular. It's the 'getting-off-your-arse-and-doing-something' that is involved in a petition which is what seems to sway them. They already know the people are unhappy and they don't care, but when they see a million names on a piece of paper they can actually be moved to action for some reason. Not sure if Lucas could be moved, though, but it might be worth a shot.

So in short:
  • The people own the rights to all films.
  • The public has as much to say as the person investing in and making the films.
  • All decisions must be taken by everyone working on the film.
  • It might be ok for the artists to make small changes if rereleasing a film as long as the people likes them, if not the people can react in any manner they see fit.

If I got it right, then hese ideas have been tested in big scale ;):

Yeah but if not for Communism we never would have gotten the Hunt For Red October and that's a damn fine film. So it's okay.

Really?!?!?!?

It's as simple as this, people are spoiled children and this thread is just them stamping their feet and holding their breathes, because they aren't getting what they want.

I grew up with Star Wars.
I love the originals. However.....
I'm so excited to be getting the BD's in 5 days, it's like i'm 10 again!

I can't be arsed tantrumming.

Star Wars saga....on Blu-ray....with DTS HD-MA 6.1 sound.....tons of extras....easter eggs.....annoying the wife with constant SW overload!

C'mon, we love it!!!!!

For the sake of peace we are supposed to keep politics out of this forum.
Maybe get rid of the picture?

Don't forget the Bond films, all the cold war stuff.
Would we have even bothered to go to the moon if we didn't have a bit of healthy competition from the Cosmonauts?

Somewhere in an underground bunker a cold war computer kicks into life.
cobwebs drag around old reel to reel tape drives. Dull lights flicker down an empty hall.
An ancient dot matrix printer fires up and a name is clattered out.

Above rust falls from gears as a surface to surface missile travels up it's underground well.

You guys are mental, George is a GOD. He can do whatever he wants to Star Wars, they're his movies, it's his universe.
He feels he's making them better, he probably does live a kind of isolated life and could do with sitting around chatting with a few Star Wars fans every now and again to touch base but the man gave me something I adore with everything I have - any revision he makes I can't wait to see.
Heck, I wish he'd make one more alteration - give me Boba Fett's glove breaking through the Tatooine sand after the credits of Jedi, just like Masters of the Universe!

Sorry, died in the belly of the Sarlaac as the punk amateur he was.

(Although I would buy into the, Doctor Doom style, that one was an idiot clone idea.)

Didn't you mention in another thread that you protested to get another season of ST: TOS back in the day? Or am I misremembering?

Wrong thread.

It's OK for Mic to get what he wants :darnkids, but not the rest of us :lol

I was wondering that too!

They cancelled star trek, so Mic started complaining. Back then he made phone calls in place of the internet.

He moaned long enough with enough other people and got what he wanted.

The idea that fans shouldnt keep whining about this is nonesense. If it wasnt for the 'whiners' we wouldnt even have the LD tranfer....

Like I said, I don't think it'll make much difference. I mean, as a cathartic exercise, or as an opportunity to generally chat about other stuff, I don't see a problem with threads like this. But I wouldn't get your hopes up that a thread like this or a petition or something will actually amount to anything. Nor, for that matter, will some "boycott" other than to perhaps promote some sense of solidarity among fans who would otherwise not be buying the set anyway.

I think George knows that there are a fair number of fans who don't like his changes. I think George likes his changes...for now...until he changes them again. The fans' opinions don't enter into it. The only thing George would care about is losing money, but unless and until someone can sneak a digital HD rip of some old film stock, with 7.1 or 6.1 or at least 5.1 sound onto file sharing networks, he doesn't really have to worry about losing money on people pirating the original OT at this point. My bet is that's the only reason he offered the LD rips. Not because he wanted to make the fans happy, but because he wanted to position his products to occupy a market space. You'll also note he did so ONLY with a purchase of the modified versions; you couldn't buy the LD rips on their own.

Like I said, it ain't about George responding to fan desires. It's about the money. It's just business. It's not personal.

Well its also said that we should be cautious to not misrepresent or besmirch the reputation of any individual, group, site, or company. If we can say anything about Lucas and ILM, Im sure a historical pic of Lenin is ok as its not a political discussion. If a mod ask, Ill remove the pic of course.

Sure, that's what they told Fredo Corleone.

I think it was originally said by Michael to Sonny, actually.

Oh, and Nazgul, in terms of "all art belongs to the people!", I'm not advocating communism or state ownership of art. As I said, I think it's a split between the artist and the public, rather than purely the artist's to do with as they please without regard to the public at all. I'm also talking post-release. Obviously, when making your own art initially, it's up to the artist to do what they will, but once it's out there, to simply eradicate what came before is, I think, wrong. Fine to build on it, but not to pretend the past never happened -- which, ironically, would be communism of the Stalinist variety...

It is pretty well documented regarding the Star Trek nerds campaigning for more Trek. Roddenberry was involved as well.

Now it's the Star Wars nerds' time to shine. Protesting DOES work, but it may take awhile.

This whole situation makes me thing George's movies are seen by him as demos. Like the first version of a song that sucks, but then goes on to be molded into a masterpiece.

Don't release demos first, George.

I know you didnt. I took some of the opinions in the thread and took them to the extreme. I see big problems with artists being responsible against the public, but Ive adressed them in earlier posts. If Lucas releases a new version doesnt really change the old ones. The previous versions still exists.

Noone had done anything like SW before Lucas made it. If he would have listened to everyone he wouldnt have done it. So we should be glad he works the way he does.
