The Mandalorian (TV series)

I do. As convenient as streaming is, if my Internet is down it can't stop me from watching my favorite movies. Plus I despise the idea of renting it for the rest of my life because in essence that's what streaming is when you consider monthly Internet provider costs and xyz specific streaming service that has the rights to your favorite content. Even then you are only able to view the version of said content they make available (no thanks Star Wars: Lucas Supercuts) with little to no extra bonus footage. Hello Team Negative One! So yeah, having physical media is important to me. The same goes for music and books too. Digital has its place but not for everything. Though I know I'm in the minority on this.

Oh I understand, just trolling a little ;)

I got a 4K Original Star Wars copy on disk so I can rewatch it the way I remember from my childhood and not the continuously modified Special and Mouse editions.

Eyes were pretty dead and flat in the Mando episode as well for me and that was supposedly Mark with CG de-age.
if i understand correctly, they've put mark's face on another actor which is a deepfake. i'm wondering where you keep getting mark was the actor there just cg de-aged...?
just curious

Think someone said it here. Have no source, so might be wrong.
The process AFAIK is not the same though. In Terminator Genisys Arnold did the dialogue and the facial capture for the young Arnold scenes which was thennde-aged and put on another man's face.
In the Irishman the actors performed the roles and were de-aged. Same with Kurt Russell in GOTG2.
Deepfake as far as I know is getting a ton of reference of an actor that is not directly acting out the scene (ie photos and videos of them talking, smiling, being angry etc) and then a face is created which is matched with another actor's performance. Think Tarkin was done that way but might be wrong.
Someone please chime in if I'm mistaken, I admittedly have surface knowledge only.

I think Tarkin was possible due to a head-cast of Peter Cushing that was available. Don’t quote me on that, though.

I also think Tarkin and Leia weren’t very good and should have either been kept from being directly shown, or just played by actors.
They could have gotten Wayne Pygram to reprise the role of Tarkin. He was originally cast for the role in Revenge of the Sith, and had scenes that were apparently filmed and then cut from the theatrical release. Plus, he is a pretty excellent actor when playing bad guys (his frequent role of Scorpius on Farscape is proof of that).

Oh yea you're right, now that you mentioned. His lifecast from Top Secret was scanned and animated over another bloke's head.
I agree with CB2001, either get the guy from ROTS or even Charles Dance.

I always thought Gabriel Byrne had a Tarkin vibe to him, if they were to recast without face-swapping:

Kurt Russell has a makeup artist to de-age him, not CGI or deepfake. Makes his head look fat like a pumpkin!

I thought they did a pretty good job in the Irishman. Maybe because it is NOT Sci-fi it didn't stand out to me as much?

Really?! Wow I never knew that...granted I'm not the biggest Marvel/GOG fan so saw it only once on TV.

This a "new" kind of tech being used to transform actors...the process is not perfect by any means. Our brain knows when something is not "right" with the effect. Same with some practical effects or movements that feel artificial. Give it a few more years and no-one will see the CGI anymore;)

I also would like to get The Mandalorian on Blu-ray and/or 4K.

SW Rebels got each season on DVD, and then a box set of seasons 1-4, and then each season on Blu-ray, but the last time I checked you couldn't get all 4 seasons of Rebels on Blu-ray in 1 box set.

100% agree.. I’m not given xfinity any more money.. if a cheaper service ever comes into town I’m ditching them.

And if I did have movies downloaded I would lose them as well

I also like having the hard copy in hand

Go to a friends house you can bring it with you..

Now I’m just b1tching but my brother and niece moved in with me.. now I have them streaming, I have my parents streaming

There’s never any damn internet in this house Anymore lol

And there’s nothing I love more then my brother and niece on YouTube on their phone or iPod while the tv is playing Netflix..

Even when the tech gets pretty much perfected there will still be people complaining about how fake it looks and how bad it was only because they know it was CG and to them all CG is bad.

those people just want to argue in bad faith. CGI is an incredible tool, and a lot more seamless examples of these face swaps are out there, but I still think there's a long road for fully accepting living beings recreated in this way. If Grogu was fully CGI I don't believe he would be as beloved

CGI can be good, but why not just recast? Dumbledore was recast after Richard Harris's death and no one batted an eyelash. If it's necessary to have a legacy character come back to Star Wars, what's the big deal if they have someone new play the role? Hell they recast Han freaking Solo. Or better yet..... tell new stories instead of relying on the past. I thought this universe was supposed to be so "vast."

CGI is a tool, but like any tool, it can be overused. To the man with a hammer, every problem is a nail, right? There are certainly effects that could never be pulled off practically or for safety reasons. But I think in a general sense (not really directed at the Mandalorian, specifically), it’s gotten too easy to rely on CGI, to the detriment of many films. Doing what can be done practically, or what will look best practically, is important to evoking a visceral response from an audience. Of course there’s such a thing as a bad practical effect or stunt as well, but that’s the point I’m making essentially. Use the whole toolset, not just the shiny new one. It’s like the student filmmaker who just got a drone and now every project and assignment they do has a drone shot in it.
