The Mandalorian (TV series)

Has anyone theorized that the species of Yoda and the Child might be Jedi? A species whose homeworld has no natural predators. A species that is allowed to stay young longer without the need to develop quickly in the presence of a predator. A species that is born with knowledge of the force as a sense, like sight or hearing. This would be a perfect species to be the Prime Jedi. The only thing I cannot figure out is why there are so few. The lack of predators and longevity may naturally remove the need for large numbers of births.

I've been thinking about this a lot since Season One.

There is a concern I have that the child could easily become a plot contrivance. I mean he healed Grief and stopped a giant fireball with almost no effort in either case. While it does show empathy on his part, which I like because he's saving his friends, it also robbed some of the tension away from those scenes pretty quickly. Now being self contained episodes I understand that it has to be resolved fairly quickly so it's not a terrible idea to have him step in, but I just hope they don't keep doing it when they write themselves into a corner. To their credit when he lifted the mud horn he did pass out for a day or so from the effort which showed he's vulnerable.

I completely agree that there wasn't really anything 'new' other than a new character. I guess what I got from it was, he's a bounty hunter/Merc, which almost by definition implies that the credits rule everything. In this episode, his predicament was completely as a result of him giving his word.

He was really doing the mechanic a favor by taking the frog to her destination, cause as a skilled tracker, I'm sure he could've gotten to the planet & found the Covert. He put himself, the child, & his ship at risk by traveling at sub-light, & his fears were justified. The various things he did to help & protect Mrs Frog & her eggs were almost completely altruistic, with nothing in it really for himself. I personally think he could've taken out those 2 pilots with a minimum of effort, but he responded to the 'live & let live' actions of the pilots in kind.

All that because of his word, even when it hindered his overall mission.

Plus, we get a little more of his hard it is to 'parent' the child.
This was very stupid because the mechanic had only known the frog also for 1 hour. :D
A lot on this episode was not really conclusive.;)

I actually really enjoy that the episodes are mostly self contained. There is a lose overarching plot that the whole series follows but it's not like Stranger Things, GoT or Breaking Bad where it poses as a series but it's really just a really really really long movie.
It's not bad overall. But the longer it takes, you get the impression that it never ends

It's called character and world building. Not every episode needs to have big plot twists and turns. Its so annoying that since GOT, people think every episode of a tv show needs to progress the plot. Didnt anyone grow up watching shows in the 80s/90s?

I think this is very character building, for both Mando and the Child. Both of their personalities are really starting to come through.

It was clear, at the end of this episode after Mrs. Frog (even though she was reading leopard gecko to me...) used the droid to tell him her plea, that he actually tried to care about her and the eggs. So his empathy can extend past the Babs, and has to.

I'm fine with either long form plots or self contained stories as long as they are interesting and the characters are compelling enough to get emotionally invested in.

I can't say I'm overly impressed with the characters in this show but I do like them enough to have kept watching thus far and I think there is certainly potential there. So far I enjoy the child ( obviously because he's adorable and empathetic) and Cara Dune whose past intrigues me. The Mandalorian is actually my least favorite from everyone we've met. Not that he's bad by any means but I'm more interested in the supporting characters than him.

A lot better than the first episode, for me. Sure, I guess reading the comments here, the spiders are from Rebels? But they don’t look like cartoons like the cat thing from last season, and they worked really well on a monster movie vibe for me. This would have been much better to have been released last week with Halloween. I thought the frog would bother me, because at first glance I didn’t like how big the head was, but I ended up really liking that whole aspect of the episode. Frankly, while I would enjoy a more straightforward narrative done more like Stranger Things, with essentially an eight hour long movie, episodes like these, when done well, can be really entertaining too. The music in this episode was also my favorite of the whole show so far. The plinky, soft music while Baby Yoda eats the eggs, some of the Mando theme being kinda redone slightly as he fixes the ship. Really good. The rebels didn’t bother me, I liked the attitude they took towards Mando, seemed more natural than say that EA game trailer everyone was raving about a few months ago with the cringey overacting and melodramatic dialogue. “War’s over, Imp.” So overall, glad to have an episode I could unequivocally enjoy almost without caveat this season. Hope to get at least one or two more like it.

Edit: forgot about that stupid bug alien in the cantina. I get it, there was a giant praying mantis in ANH. Doesn’t mean there needs to be big bug aliens in Star Wars. They look stupid.

This is where I remembered the spider thingy from...

I know Ralph did it as a concept for Dagobah, & I don't remember all the details, but I'm thinking it was a mushroom that evolved into a spider or vice versa. I'm not sure.

I know I watched every episode of REBELS, but if they were in there, I don't remember it.

Getting old sucks.

Guess I forgot about that bit of concept art. Good catch. At any rate, they worked for me in the episode.

Oh, I do think I remember reading that in one of the old Visual Dictionaries, or maybe this big encyclopedia on Star Wars EU that my school’s library had back when I was into EU stuff.
