I'll add to this, now that I have my blank and star. I looked at Fred Meyers (like a Wal-Mart) and no metal tone Duplicolors, despite saying they carry it on the Duplicolor site. But I did find Krylon's anodized blue and red, so for the sake of adding knowledge to the fold, I'll try those. Worse case, I'll strip it. I have an airbrush so I have a lot more options than most people and excellent hobby shops and other stores here.

Acetone in hand and will clean it good tomorrow. Just have to wait till Thursday for the Seattle rain to clear.

Im in Olympia and we just had 4 days of almost 90 degree weather and then it poor's like crazy all weekend. Sucks! Good luck with the Krylon. O reileys has the Duplicator if you decide to strip it and redo. Hopefully it will come out awesome.

Just finished the final coat this weekend, I honestly couldn't think of a better place to complete my shield. Special thanks to my squadron's sheet metal swing shift shop for helping me give an amazing paint job and a nice secure area to dry it after hours.



I did have to redo the paint once before, and I apparently caked it on and did unspeakable things to the aluminum surface (sanded parts to remove layered paint- horrible I know) but they, being experts with metal, guided me through laying down a more even coat, layering, and patience. I swear having it out of the house drying at work kept me from thinking 'maybe I'll add another coat'... and these guys were just awesome chatting with. Had I not gone to them for help I know my final product wouldn't have been nearly as nice nor would it have been as rewarding to share in the glory without such good company at my side. I'll look forward to bringing any small projects their way as any excuse for seeing more of these great gentlemen. And of course, though it goes without saying, it will be said; thank you rpf community! =D

On another note, I know the current battle is between Testors and Duplicolor, but I have a couple questions regarding the paint that I may have missed during my many read-throughs of this thread.

1. I'm looking for more of the Winter Soldier finish (I believe you guys are using a satin clear coat to achieve this?). Which of the two would be better for that?
2. I'm assuming I can pick up the Duplicolor paints at any paint store in town. Could the same be said for the Testors paints? If not, where would be the best place to get them?
3. Just want to clarify that for Duplicolor, the paints are "metalcast red" and "metalcast" blue - and for Testors its "candy apple red" and "transparent blue"?

Would love some clarification on these guys.

I wouldn't necessarily call it a battle between the two different types of paint. both look awesome it just depends on what type of look you're going for.

1. you are correct on the specific names in both brands of spray paint.

2. Duplicolor can be found in most automotive shops like autozone.

3. I've only ever found testors at hobby shops like Hobby Lobby.

4. .when I use Duplicolor I've used its matching clear coat and you get that really shiny automotive type bling

5. testors and its matching clear coat give you that more satin type finish

Drake, which Duplicolor clear coat did you use? It looks like they have a few. Is it just as finicky to apply as the paint?

I used Krylon Satin for the first two shields I made Now I'm making four…three for friends, one for myself. One wants the satin finish, so I'll use the same Krylon Satin for that that I've used in the past. I'm considering spending the money and getting one of the others professionally coated at a body shop. but I'm going to experiment with a rattle can for the other two.

I've considered the Rustoleum 2x Gloss or the Krylon Crystal Clear. I'm interested in the Duplicolor you used, though, if it gives an extra 'pop.'

While we're at it, does anyone have experience with making the leather straps completely movie accurate? It almost looks like there's two layers of leather that are stitched together to make it have a 'leveled' look. Since mine is going to weigh a gajillion pounds, I was thinking I'd reinforce it with a sandwiched layer of something to prevent leather stretch. Ideas?

i can't speak to that. I've only used Duplicolor for the paint & haven't tried Testor's.

That looks beautiful. I was thinking about going with the light brow straps but yours look really good. I'm torn between the two colors.

Since there seems to be a solid amount of questions regarding the type of paint to use and/or the difference between Duplicolor vs. Testors I figure I'd post a pictorial of your choices. I've done all three and the following are examples. Individual Painting technique will vary on your results.

Duplicolor - Found at Automotive Shops (Autozone / O'Rilieys)
These are the colors along with the matching clear you can use:


This will result in this type of look:


Testors - Found at Hobby Shops (Hobby Lobby)
These are the colors along with the matching clear you can use:


This will result in this type of look:


Automotive Grade Clear Coat - Dependant on finding a local body shop willing to spray it. Heavy duty and results in a Car type look


Ultimately the route you go with will be dependent on which look you want your shield to have. There are pluses and minuses to each

Nice job Kevin! How do you intend to attach the two layers? Just go through the pre-stitched holes with a lockstitch?

And this is just gorgeous! I love the finish, I can't see any blemishes which are glaring on mine up close (you really treated your blank nice!) and it just shines, all parts. I'm torn between which paint type I like more.
