The "I'm painting a Captain America Shield" thread

Marvel (and others) are cracking down. Best to quit while you're ahead.

As far as the star goes, it's not the easiest to accomplish but it can be and has been done. Steamshovel had the shop fill in the center hole before shipping and he used his dremel to etch the star in to the surface.

Is your star already fixed to the shield or just sitting on top at this point? It sounds like most people attach the star last. I have a blank on the way and have never done a project like this so I am reading what you guys are doing.

stripped and going to start my second attempt tomorrow. Still seeking a better place to spray that won't allow nasty fuzzies to accumulate but I might have one at work.

The circle on the star is a pair of rare earth magnets securing the point to the shield as during the stripping process it took the glue off. I found them useful for securing the points of the stars to the contour of the shield. This time I'll have to be careful to ease up on the paint.

I had to attach it, it was a separate piece. Valor is the guy to go to for stars and straps (back bracket and leather handle system). Its better to have everything attached first before painting. This was my first attempt too so good luck and don't be afraid to ask plenty of questions!

So I just got my blank and am excited to start painting. One question though, my shield has a few light scuffs on it

If I paint over them with the Duplicolor Metalcast Blue, will these still be visible? If so, does anyone have any suggestions on how to best buff them out? I'm totally new to this, so any advice would be appreciated. Thanks!

If the scuffs are very light you should be able to gently rub them out with a polishing cloth and some acetone. I had a couple scuffs on my blank that at first looked like pretty big scratches but came right out with a couple rounds of wiping it down.

That's a relief. I was a little worried there. Thanks for the info!

New member here but I just wanted to start off by saying how much I enjoy reading these forums. The posts here are incredibly polite, professional, and well-meaning. I feel privileged just to view everyone's amazing work.

I had a question regarding the star on the shields. There is mention of recessed stars etched directly into the shield itself. I understand that the fabrication process for the shields is specific to the movie's or scene's demands of the prop. However, while watching TFA I noticed that when Evans first sees the blank shield there is no star. With the shield composed of a vibranium alloy and Stark stating "that's all we have" how could the star be etched into his shield? Wouldn't the star have to be an add on? If so, wouldn't the add on technically make it more movie accurate? With the expertise on this board I figured I could put this thought to rest. :) Thank you in advance for any responses!

They got Wolverine to etch the star with his adamantium claws? Lol. But on a serious note the movie writers probably did not factor comic book logic into how can you etch a shield that is supposedly indestructible. I guess if they had to explain it they could say, "well that was all the vibranium to make a shield... except for a vibranium tipped cutter we used to make the shield."

He's not making shields anymore. What are you wanting? Maybe we can help.

Well, I am still making swords and shields... that's my side business... but I do not make Captain America shields. If I haven't returned your messages, it's because I've been busy at work, or you asked me to make something I can't make.

Thanks Chris. Damn shame...

Beautiful work Man! What paint did you use? Im about to do my blank and have never been much of a painter.

I used the Duplicolor Metalcast Blue and Metalcast Red. For the clear coat i used Spraymax 2K Clearcoat which is a catalyzing two part paint and much much more durable then the regular rattlecan clears. I'm normally terrible at painting as well. I got lucky with my shield, somehow despite my lack of skills it came out perfect on the first go and i didn't need to strip it and start over.

Thanks man! I'm hoping to have the same good fortune and only have to do it once as well. We shall see.

I'll add to this, now that I have my blank and star. I looked at Fred Meyers (like a Wal-Mart) and no metal tone Duplicolors, despite saying they carry it on the Duplicolor site. But I did find Krylon's anodized blue and red, so for the sake of adding knowledge to the fold, I'll try those. Worse case, I'll strip it. I have an airbrush so I have a lot more options than most people and excellent hobby shops and other stores here.

Acetone in hand and will clean it good tomorrow. Just have to wait till Thursday for the Seattle rain to clear.
