The "I'm painting a Captain America Shield" thread

I actually don't use JB for the star... takes too long to cure... I use a 5 min epoxy for it and made up a "negative" version of the star dome out of wood and I place over it and put some weight on it. :)

I'm working on three Shields right now for clients:

Really? Not one battle damage? That's a shame. Quick question Frosty, would I need any specific type of paint gun for your method, or would any size work?

You don't need a huge gun, it's not like you're painting a whole car. If you live near a Harbor Freight Tools, they have great gun kits and compressors at ecceptional prices.

I'd love to do a battle damaged shield. I know exactly what technique I'd use too...

Well I painted the outer ring of my shield today. Will post pics when I get home. I'm following GF's advice and trying one heavy wet coat with the duplicolor paints. After I finished it looked like I messed up with heavy spray in some areas however as it is drying it is smoothing out nicely. I just have a few really small bare marks in the groove but nothing huge. I will probably wait a few days before taping up and painting the inner red ring just to make sure I don't pull any paint with the tape.

Out of curiosity why did you decide to paint the two red rings separately?

Damn man I grab a ton of crap from Harbor freight and I never thought to checkout gun kits. Any recommendations on what they have to pickup?

Don't forget the 20% off coupons ;)

It was to avoid any over-spray when painting the inner ring that may cause any dusting or random spots. It may take an extra step but it seems to have worked well so far. Need to do the inner ring next. It is raining the next couple of days so it will probably have to wait until the weekend.

Really depends on your budget and needs. I got a great kit for around $50 that came with a mini and full size gun.

Cool deal, I would be nervous about the possibility of the red rings not matching exactly shade wise if I were to break them up into two different painting sessions. Can't wait to see how they come out!

So here is my further contributions to the thread. Earlier in the thread I posted pics about me having to start the painting over from scratch over the Christmas holidays. Well the shield repaint went well. So well in fact that I decided to make more shields as Christmas presents to my nephews. I also tried my hand at replicating Valor's Sled Shield build with great results.
My nephews are small so I decided to make some mini shields and I want to thank Blastmaster for paving the way with these and for being a great help in answering my questions about his process! Here is a pic of the mini shields freshly painted along with my original repainted shield. I elected to leave the flat edge on the discs and used the holes in them to mount backpack straps

After painting my buddy who owns an auto shop did me a solid and hit them with a glossy coat. Here he is getting down with the gloss gun.

Nephews were really happy come Christmas :)

After that I wanted to try my hand at making the sled shield. Again thanks to Valor who has been awesome guiding me through the process! Here we are post paint but no gloss next to my aluminum shield. Can you tell which is which?

As a side note I have decided I hate JB weld. Just so messy and pretty hard to apply it cleanly by myself so I decided "screw it I am just bolting the stars down." I actually liked how it came out and it was much easier and cleaner than gluing.

about how many cans of spray paint does it take for a single shield? i'm gearing up to do mine in the next weekend or so... just have to strip the paint off first, but i don't want to run out of paint when i'm in the middle of spraying.
