The "I'm painting a Captain America Shield" thread

Here is my first attempt at painting.

Painted usin duplicolor metal cast anodized paints. No primer. I did three layers of paint, wet sanded afterward for an even look, washed it down with soap and water, then clear coated with krylon clear protectant.

Originally I used rustoleum enamel gloss and it was a nightmare. It came out looking dusty whenever there wasn't a wet layer on top. I wet sanded with 1500, did a quick wipe with acetone, wet sanded again, nearly down to the paint, washed again, dried, and then used the krylon clear. This is what came out. Even layers on krylon is important so It doesn't clump or goop. If anyone has suggestions I'd love to hear them, especially for the best method for an even gloss. I went heavy one layer closer than recommended but kept the can moving at all times.

And this is what it looks like nearly stripped like, similar to the teaser poster from TWS. Simple acetone makes it easy, so messing up the pain isn't that big of a problem except dumping more money into the paint. ImageUploadedByTapatalk1413592851.907101.jpg

The silver ring around the blue circle looks kind of cool. Never seen that before. Nice job!

Yeah the silver ring had mostly to do with not getting the red I the groove well enough. I decided to take pointed q-tips dipped in acetone to clean the ring out. I thought it looked cool, even if not 100% screen accurate.

Lovin the hanger idea, may just have to knick that.

Mine is pained and battle damage knocked off, got to start on the black now, not looking forward to it at all

Hi guys.

I had some things sidetrack me and I lost momentum on my shield. My shield has been painted and just needs the clear coat, star attached, and a handle on back. And it'll be done.

I feel like an idiot for asking but....what do I use to glue the star down? JB weld? Something else? Any tips on applying glue to the tips so that it doesn't ooze out when I weigh down the star to adhere well?

Finally, I read that I should clear coat the star before adherence. Any strong opinions whether I should clear coat after adherence?

I used JB Weld. As for getting it on the tips, I used a tooth pick and put it on very carefully. Be sure to bend the star so that it sits flat on your shield before attempting to glue it down.

As for clear coat, I did it after I glued it on. Then I clear coated the whole thing.

I finished using Tamiya paints today on my steel monstrosity. And it looks excellent. Tamiya Clear Blue and Mica Red. I was worried the red wouldn't be transparent, but it was. Whole thing was brilliantly close in color to the movie shield. Hopefully I'll get a picture up soon, gonna go get the brackets welded Wednesday hopefully.

I had GeneralFrosty paint my Chris Fields aluminum shield and I couldn't be happier with the end result.

GF did a great job with excellent communication and professionalism.

This is a project I didn't wanna tackle on my own. I'd rather have a guy that's painted 20 of these things do it than a guy (me!) that's NEVER done one before. ;)

THANKS AGAIN GF!

Still figuring out my new phone for pictures, but that's a relatively decent idea of the colors. It's more of a pink hue to it than the duplicolor, a lot like the Testor's.

Almost done setting the rivets for the handles. Almost. They're just decorative, but damn.

So is jb weld the way to go when getting the brackets stuck down or what are the other alternate methods? Tape?

3M outdoor mounting tape is the way to go. Just make sure your brackets are bent as close to the curve of the shield as possible. And don't touch the sticky tape with your fingers and then touch the shield. It will leave fingerprints of the glue from the tape on the metal.

Hi, this is the shield I used with the TWS movie costume. It's made with resins and carbon fiber, so it will not shine as much as I would like. Anyway I decided to paint it like the teaser of the movie where almost all the red paint was gone.
First I paint the rings with two different kind of metal paint: alluminium for the "white" ring, the "blue" ring and the star, and chrome for the "red" rings.
