The "I'm painting a Captain America Shield" thread

Alright question for those of you who have used a sled: What is the best way to draw and cut out the circles? Is it to use the kind of clock hand mechanism that was used to give it that spun effect?

Yes. I used a small piece of aluminum left over from making my star to sand my circular spun effect in then I used the same piece and drilled holes for a shape at the places I wanted the rings to be at.

I've made a few sled shields as well as mini shields and the best tool I've used to measure and make circles is a Fiberglass slide compass. This is the particular one I bought from Lowes.

Bostitch Compass

So long as you have a center hole for the compass to fit in you can easily extend it out far enough to cut rings into the painters tape for a full size shield. Just replace the pencil with an exacto knife.

One quick question: Is it better to cover the whole shield with tape and then cut out the rings or is it better draw the rings and then tape around the edges of the drawn out rings?

I drew on the circles with pencil... then taped off each ring for painting... however I really like drakes idea of using the compass with an exacto to cut the tape.

Haha I still have my half finished shield rusting away in my garage at the moment... never got around to painting it... painted... stripped... painted... stripped probably 5 times then it got too cold.

Well I ended up covering the whole thing and then using the compass to draw/cut. Got the red on last night and WOW is it stunning! I'm loving this duplicolor! Its kind of hard to capture the anodized metal grain effect in a picture but I'm to excited not to share. :D

Boy do those fingerprints show up. Luckily I used acetone before painting

Thats what I did and I am super happy with the way it came out! Any tips for making sure there's no gap between the colors? I was just planning on keeping my compass on the same setting as last time and recutting.

Is that Duplicolor Metal cast red anodized?

Yessir! And it is absolutely STUNNING! Although in the pics its hard to see the metal grain through it. But it really does show through.
It looks great! I've been looking for it locally with no luck, I'll probably order it online.

Where are you located? I got mine at autozone so I'm sure they have it at other auto places. I did see it on amazon for a dollar cheaper though.

I'm in Detroit... I didn't even think of Autozone or an auto parts store. Did you use the adhesion promoter?

Nope just strait on. I did clean it with acetone though right before I put the tape on and then on the rings where I cut the tape out right before I painted

The duplicolor paints are primarily automotive paints so Autozone, O Rileys, Advance Autoparts and the like. I've never seen it at a hardware store.

I picked them up at Meijer (regional chain that has an automotive area). I had looked for them there before... but, not in the auto section.
