The Hobbit - Weta Replicas / Collectibles - Launching Monday 1 OCtober

Thank you... Looks very nice... I think it is not as bad as everyone said when the ring-release announcement was made...

Just for direct comparison purposes:

As far as the radius and curvature of the sides and outer edge, and the edge width, the Noble version does not seen too far off. The Hansen version does not match up as well.

Too bad the Noble collection version only comes in a size ten, instead of an eleven, which was the size in the movie. I'm still not sure where I should get mine. WETA or Noble? Directly from JH is way out of my price range.

That doesn't make sense, JH IS the one ring.

Hand made rings will never be completely identical, and there were both large scale rings for close-ups made, and small scale. I think hansen made something like 40 rings in various scales. About half the time the ring was CGI in FOTR, like these.

Look at the top two grabs below (right) from FOTR and you will find the height of these two Hansen props is not even the same. It's about 20% shorter on the top one.

It could just be the lighting, but the outer and edge raduis on the Hansen (bottom left) does not seem to match up to the film ring (right) when looking at a comparable angle from FOTR.

Nah, I'm still going to be happy with my JH replica. I can see where you're coming from, Kit, but I think the JH has the "essence" of the prop down.

Compared to some of the previous efforts, both JH and Noble both look good IMO.

Well I guess a better question would be which version do you own Kit?
My wife had mine made custom, and it's actually my wedding band. Top right in this pic. It's close, but not completely accurate. Closer to the CGI version than the real props. The one on the left is a proto of the oversized ring from the UC Gauntlet of Sauron replica. I don't remember who made the one on the bottom, but it's way off.

Well, you have to note that the two photos of Sauron wearing the ring appear to be completely CG. The rest of the comparisons appear to have different light directions which will affect the appearance of a round surface. that is the beauty of this ring. It has such a bizarre shape with the curvature and thickness that it is hard to visually define.

but you're right, handmade jewelry will vary slightly but not so much that one could say a replica is more accurate than a handmade original.

I did actually, and FYI, all of the screen grabs in that whole horizontal row are CG, not just those two.

Depends on which original, since there were a few times they were not the same width in FOTR, but both replicas look good to me, as I said above. I was just referring to the one in that pic jm419 posted not matching up very well.

And that would be why I said "it could just be the light":)

This thread has gone in a cool direction, I've never payed that close attention to the Ring. Thanks for all the info!

Yeah, ultimately the most important things are the thickness and the low-profile curve of the ring. It looks like NC finally got that right.

wel, I got the Noble Collection LOTR version of the ring in the cool little silver display.
I honestly bought the ring for the display
but the ring...

Yuck.... its gold, but not polished at all. The shape of it is very wrong.

its obvious from the photos that Nobles Hobbit version is far superior

Any chance of pics, David? I'm extremely curious how their LOTR vs. Hobbit versions compare, being from the same company and all.

I bought a Jens Hansen silver/gold plated ring a few years back, but looking at the pics of their new Weta version, mine seems a bit... "thin" if that makes any sense. I guess it could be chalked up to all of them being hand-made or something... but it does strike me as curious.

This isn't a normal sized ring. For this shot they used a MASSIVE ring instead of a finger sized one. I can't remember if it's on their official webpage or in the making of on the Lord of the ring Discs. But it's freaking cool. If I can find the link of the MASSIVE ring they used in the shot I will post it up.

It's on the Hansen website, along with how they made it. I'm pretty sure it's on one of the film docs on the DVD too. The point of that post and the pic was to show that different scale rings were used, and sometimes they do not exactly match in shape and proportion.
