The Fountain Guard, Lord of the RIngs: Return of the king (Completed) (Photo Heavy)

Re: Fountain Guard Build Lotr/Rotk (Photo Heavy)

Looks really good with that added on. How many rings do you think there are in total there?

How have you attached it to the tunic? The photo is a but blurry and I can't quite tell whats on the fabric.

I would have to guess about 500ish at minimum I honestly wasn't keeping count of them. But hot it is attached is via a lace like trim that I sewed into the fabric on the backside and then painstakingly weaved the chainmail through it and back into itself to suspend it. It also goes all the way around the tunic.

Re: Fountain Guard Build Lotr/Rotk (Photo Heavy)

Must have taken a while. I'm working on some at the moment and every so often try and estimate the number to feel like I've made progress. It's an interesting solution for attaching it. Hadn't thought of anything like that. You've got it sitting really nicely as well.

How goes the current progress?

I have done some work on the belt aspect of it, but I need to get more tools before I can actually make some of the parts that go to it, I have the parts for the spear but have not shaped the spear head yet, the sword is nearing its completion and will be going into painting phase within the next couple weeks.

Re: Fountain Guard Build Lotr/Rotk (Photo Heavy)

This is just impressive! I have always wanted to do this build! Would you ever consider selling your templates? I would be honored! Thanks

whelp it has been ages since I posted but I had to keep it hidden for Wondercon! so if you were there and lucky enough to see it I congratulate you! :D here are some shots from the convention actual progress shots to come later.

Unfortunately, my phone that I took the photos of my progress on was damaged and I do not know if I will be able to recover them. :(

Looks great and looks like it went down well too. That's a real shame with your phone though. I'd be interested in any details of how you did the spear for sure.

I am trying to see if they backed up to the cloud or to my computer, If I find them I will post them!

Re: The Fountain Guard, Lord of the RIngs: Return of the king (Completed) (Photo Heav

Well there was some luck, I had sent out a set of emails containing a variety of the photos so I have some progress shots! :) I am very happy. So I will post about armor first followed by weapons.
Here is a view of the back of my chest/back plates, showing the strapping of the armor and then cloth reinforcement to protect the seams. And the photo imediatly following it is a shot of my gorget and the shoulder lames getting put together.

Here I have shots of the armor layout prior to painting followed by the painting process and the various sealing passes.

In these shots I have started adding the rivets to the armor before it gets its final pass of sealer

In this post I will cover my creation of the belt.
For the buckles I went out and bought some copper piping and bent it to shape/soldered it with the help of one of my friends, I then bent some 9 gauge wire to make the tongue of the belt. I then coated the buckles in plasti-dip before then spraying it with brass spray paint.

For the belt I purchased a long strip of black leather and attached it with rivets to the two main buckles.
Making_the_belt.JPGfirst_part_belt_complete.JPG
I then cut out by hand 10 belt ornaments that would go on either side of the belt from a sheet of brass, before hand engraving them and drilling holes into them (this was painstaking) Second photo shows the sharpie lines before I engraved it, as a sort of guide.

Re: The Fountain Guard, Lord of the RIngs: Return of the king (Completed) (Photo Heav

Alas we have come to the weapons portion of the update.
The making of the spear, So what I did was I drew out a spearhead on a block of wood and then cut it out with a bandsaw. I then shaped it with a Dremel, and sandpaper before cutting out and designing the half moon guard at the bottom.
Spear_wood_cutout.JPGSpear_wood_shaped_preglue.JPG
I then painstakingly figured out a way to glue it to itself with various clamps, and after it was glued I used the Dremel to shape the guard on it, into a more round shape.
Spear_Glued.JPGSpear_glued_shaped_readyforpaint.JPG
After that was completed I painted it along with my sword. There are no progress shots for the making of the shaft of the spear unfortunately but what I did was used ebony stain to stain a wooden dowel. I broke the spear down into 3 parts to make it easier to travel with. There is a small detail you cannot see on the spearhead in these photos but for the Minas Tirith logo that goes on the spearhead, and to make the shape for that I used soldering wire. The second photo just shows a scale test to make sure that the spear was in fairly correct proportion, and so you can see it in its entirety.

For the scabbard I took a piece of wood and split it down the middle, and glued felt on the inside as to no scrape my sword, I then glued the two pieces together with a bit of plywood on the side to give it the boxed shape. I then covered it in suede for that authentic leather look. I then added brass fittings on it which I do not have photos of either :/

And alas we have the finished fountain guard!

(noticed other photo did not have sword with scabbard in it so I added this photo for you all! :D enjoy!!! )

Glad you were able to recover some of the in progress shots. Always great to see this kind of detail.

I'd be really interested to find out more about how you split the spear. Can't quite tell from the images how it worked. Also I was wondering what kind of thickness of dowel did you use and what kind of wood was it? Have a spear to make in my future and trying to pick up all I can from you.

So what I did was I split the spear into 3 sections, two sections for the body of the spear and one for the spear head, I eventually glued my spearhead to the spear because it was not sitting right when I screwed it back together. I used a 1" wooden dowel I picked up from home depot and cut it out to 9' and then cut it into a 4' and 5' section respectively before staining it and putting int the screw ends and a 1' Pvc pipe cut to size and sprayed with plasti dip, that was then slid over the seam to keep the spear from wobbling.

Re: The Fountain Guard, Lord of the RIngs: Return of the king (Completed) (Photo Heav

Sounds good. I'll probably be borrowing some of those ideas in the future. So did the pipe just cover the seam edges or more of the length?

What do you mean when you say the screw ends? Was it a particular type you used and how easy were they to put in?

Thanks for all the information.

Re: The Fountain Guard, Lord of the RIngs: Return of the king (Completed) (Photo Heav

Reviving this thread for a question, Is there anyone who would be interested in parts to make this outfit or buying a set of the armor, as people have asked me about it before.

Re: The Fountain Guard, Lord of the RIngs: Return of the king (Completed) (Photo Heav

I'm making Gondor armor (first real project) right now. I would love to have the patterns you used for the Helmet (and other bits)

What Gondorian set are you making? 2nd Age, Infantryman, Bowman, Citadel Guard, Fountain Guard, Ranger, Pip's Outfit? So I can get a clearer picture of what set you are trying to do.

I was either wanting to make the Infantryman, or Fountain Guard suit. I guess it mostly depends on what resources I'm able to gather to help me construct the suit.

Well I can tell you from personal experience, that the Infantry/Cav Suit is an easier suit to make and it is easier to gather materials for, and is also an easier suit to make in my opinion.
