But that was in the comics and as we know, the movies and shows aren't beholden to what happened in Legends or the EU. They are and always have been secondary canon. A great source for ideas but they don't have to use anything from it in its entirety and pick and choose what parts of it they use and how much of the back history of what they use.
So this excuse is great and all… but what happens when the inherent writing and character building going on within the stories is significantly poorer in quality and significance when coming from the ‘new giant corporate entity’ and owner of what has effectively been manipulated explicitly now into a brand/product, but used to simply just be three really special well made movies that were telling a really well written short story made by a group of artists under the guidance of producers/seasoned professionals.
What happens when you have a situation, much like with the Sequel Trilogy, where that new Corporate owner simply wants to create new characters(product) to capitalize on with merchandise in order to get a quick return on their financial investment, and their cheap & easy way of accomplishing that is simply sourcing stories, adventures, and would-be character accomplishments from those same Legends/EU stories in order to essentially ’Copy & Paste’ that onto their often hollow beyond the surface New Character(s). Normally in writing this would even boarder on accusations of plagiarism, but because Disney had enough absurd levels of money in order to legally to buy the rights to StarWars they are able to sidestep these negative accusations usually held in creative writing
We saw this happen with all the OT Heros in the creation of the ST where they are essentially ‘brought down’ so that the new characters can be cheaply ‘raised up’.. RIP Luke Skywalker… Id argue that the exact same is going on here with BoBF and The Mandalorian. Almost manipulatively so, and I kinda really despise it as something who loves creative writing. It was a disservice in the end with both Rey and Lukes characters in the ST, and its just as much a disservice here with Boba and Djin. They’ll both be worse off in the end for it
Which brings us to another interesting topic.. While it’s fairly clear that the films and writing of the OT and PT’s validity is without question… even if the PT is very poorly made, id argue the story is actually very sound, and that Lucas simply isnt as good a director as he maybe wishes he was, and that if honesty “Remade” with a competent team and some minor corrections would/could be phenomenal films/stories just as good as the OT… aka the core of StarWars Canon…
Why is it that Disneys SW products are held to the same regard in Canon vs just simply being a fun/interesting video media LE/EU fan take? Why is it that they aren’t held to a different standard much like the Marvel comics and the MCU and such? Or even many other book-to-film media?
Why is it with Disney StarWars that Video Media is now Law? Normally this would even have conflict of interest connotations given Disneys inherent financial interest, but even that is simply ignored.
If anything id argue the LE/EU are every bit the same thing as what Disney SW is in both intent and purpose of simply being a source for which Lucas/Disney to make more action figures and such to sell to kids..
