The best episode of any STAR TREK ever

I'll put in a plug for "Inner Light" as well. Stewart's performance was perfect and summed up Trek quite nicely.

As for complaints about Voyager, Enterprise and DS:9, all had some very good episodes. "Far Beyond the Stars" was a great DS:9 episode IMHO. But the one that sticks with me is "The Quickening" which had Bashir trying to treat the inhabitants of a planet from a bio-genetic plague created by the Dominion to punish them. He couldn't cure the plague because everything he tried was trumped by a contingency in the disease. But, he did end up in creating an in-vitro vaccine so the unborn children of the plague sufferers would be immune to it when they were born. Reason I like it so much is because it shows that not all Trek shows ended with a "happily ever after" moment where Starfleet officers emerge triumphant over something at the end of an hour. So there was a victory and a setback at the same time.

Favorite Voyager episode to me was "Tinker, Tennor, Doctor, Spy" which had the Doctor engaging in a series of visions and dreams that would make Walter Mitty jealous. There were plenty of in-jokes in the whole episode and it was just a light hearted romp with Robert Picardo chewing up the scenery ("Tuvok! Activate the Photonic Cannon!").

I like the Mirror Universe episodes from Enterprise the best, but if I had to choose a story arc using the prime characters, then the three episodes in season 4 related to Vulcan "The Forge, Awakening, Kir'Shara" rank as probably the best Enterprise had to offer as they gave the Vulcans a bit of a dirty past and showed that even logical unemotional Vulcans can be capable of evil if they feel it serves their logic.

The one where Picard saw four lights. Whatever that one was.

"Chain of Command" pt2.

Man I still can't pick a single episode!

For TOS I guess "City on the Edge of Forever". For once somebody outdoes Shatner's overacting (in this case DeForest Kelley). And Shatner's acting is actually subdued in a good way.

TNG- Wow... so many to pick from! "The Measure of a Man" comes to mind, while for a bit more action I would say "Yesterday's Enterprise".

DS9- "Far Beyond the Stars" and "The Visitor" are definitely good ones. I liked "In the Pale Moonlight" as well. However I have a soft spot for Klingon episodes with the Original Three such as "Blood Oath", "The Sword of Kahless" and "Once More Unto the Breach".

Voyager... "Real Life" comes to mind. I liked "Flashback" for the nostalgia factor. ;)

I didn't really watch Enterprise however after seeing some of the episodes in the "Fan Favourites" dvds, "In a Mirror Darkly" was outstanding! :thumbsup

There are many good episodes throughout all of the series, but my favorite is Far Beyond the Stars. It takes modern day issues and explores them in modern-ish day circumstances instead of placing today's issues 300 years in the future. Plus, it gave the make-up department an afternoon off

I have several, and I'll add my thoughts on other the other series when I finalize them, but the one episode that always stuck out in my mind was the TNG episode "Cause And Effect". When it returned from the first commercial break, it freaked me out. I had a lot of fun watching that episode, it may not be "the best" but I enjoyed it.

This.
This episode makes me cry every time I watch it.

I was actually about to look that one up. That's my all time favorite Star Trek episode. So emotional for everyone, and spectacular performances all around.

"Space Seed" for the sheer awesomeness of the concept, it's writing, it's characters and it's performances. "The Changeling" for the relentless build-up of terror surrounding NOMAD and for the fact that I honestly didn't see the ending coming. Both are stories about humanity's technology coming back to bite it in the future.

Next Gen...."The Inner Light". Beautiful concept well executed.

Star Trek Let That Be Your Last Battlefield

That's one of my personal top favorite Trek episodes too. It's hard for me to pick a #1 favorite. The old series had a bunch of great ones.

Next Gen - I gotta say my #1 favorite there is Yesterday's Enterprise followed pretty closely by All Good Things.

Can't say I'd list any of the DS9 episodes I saw. I just didn't like the show or the characters try as I might. Voyager only had a couple of honorable mentions IMHO though it's cast and writing wasn't much to write home about either.

Gotta say though, Darmok has never been one of my favorites. I liked the idea but the execution of it was lacking for me. A friend and I used to quote lines from it whenever we thought the other guy was saying something incomprehensible. But we never referred to the episode in a good way, y'know?

But to each his own. :)

Wow, I am surprised I missed this thread.

Best episode is different from favorite. My favorite would be "Mirror, Mirror."

I think Best is really a tough one.
Best, like if I am going to show just one episode to my son to "show him" what Star Trek is?
Or for the message?
The "risk" speech is a classic and the text of it even made an appearance on a few props, as I recall, as an inside joke.
"The Inner Light" was tremendous. Wonderful acting, touching story, interesting science fiction.
Some of the DS9 and VOY episodes I have only seen scenes from, but from the scripts, "Far Beyond the Stars" was also a wonderful concept. I thoroughly enjoyed many of the episodes that Ira Behr "got away with" after the studio, Rick and company were focused on Voyager and launching a network (much to the detriment of Voyager, unfortunately.)
"The City on the Edge of Forever" is often cited, and it's wonderful, but maybe I am just a sucker for time travel.

Darmok ranks up there as well, though I can recall Joe Menosky's reaction to the reaction the show got, especially from different groups like deaf people, stutterers, and others who felt like they were disenfranchised by not being able to communicate "normally" for whatever reason. All of that changed the feeling I got from the show and shaded my perception of it. So it may have been artificially upgraded.

I feel like I am too close to many of these to judge them clearly, but I am leaning towards "The Inner Light."

Now someone will post to this ancient thread and remind me of another fantastic episode and I will change my mind, again. But for now, I'll stick with that.

I'm surprised no one mentioned "The Best of Both Worlds" -- another classic.

Riddle me this Captain Kirk

I can't believe I'm casting a vote for Voyager, but "Year of Hell" really showed the crew being thrown to their wits end, and still holding on to their humanity.

Funny thing is, I lost interest in Voyager and stopped watching it. It wasn't until DVD that I gained an appreciation for it and in some ways, it rivals the others. I think Chakotay was probably the best first officer of any of the shows. The Doctor is what Data 'should' have been.

DS9 is still my favorite of the series. This VOY episode just stand out to me.

Aside from the two that seem to be getting the most votes (Darmok & Inner Light), a couple of my all-time favorites are Sarek and Chain of Command. Like the former two, Stewart's acting chops really drive these episodes home.

The scenes that immediately come to mind:

-Picard's emotional breakdown after melding with Sarek
-Picard cracking open the half-developed egg, then gobbling it down
-"There... are... FOUR LIGHTS!"

How did this guy never win an Emmy during TNG?

I'm with you on that one. I literally turned to my girlfriend at the time and said, "What does that guy have to do to get an Emmy?" during "Sarek."
