The 2009 "$1 Store" Lightsaber Contest.

I just checked and no you can not order from the Dollar Tree website for indvidual items, the website is bulk items only so its out.

I'm sorry, but the last two post are correct, neither of them are allowed, because not everything is $1. at those stores.(I'm actually just caring over that rule from the last $1. contest, from years ago, so don't shoot the messenger. )

You are allowed to have a friend mail you items from a $1 store to you, (as long as they send you a receipt with your items) or order from an online $1. store. as long as everything on the sight is $1. (or .99$) before shipping, and tax are added. Or you might checking your phone book, sometimes these thing pop up, and we don't even know about them. They are usually in plazas/strip mails, but they are in some regular malls, and there are even a few "stand alone" stores, out there.

I think the point of his smiley was that he realized that they didn't count. I could be reading it wrong, though.

Oh, I agree, I just wanted to make sure everyone else is clear on it. I know it's a little confusing, seeing as how places like "Family Dollar" have "Dollar" in the name, but we are looking for places like "Dollar tree", where everything is $1.

Actually I don't think Dollar General or Family Dollar count. Has to be from a store where everything is 1 dollar

That's correct. Dollar General and Family Dollar are out of the count. Same with Deals (as everything in the store isn't a dollar, only $5 and under).

Dammit, I can't find a 1 euro store in my town :cry

10. international entrees are welcome. Please us the denomination of your currency, closest to 1 US dollar. (i.e. 1 Pound, 1 ERO, etc. etc.) and a max of 20 of said currency, before tax, or shipping. (i.e. 20 pounds, 20 ERO, etc. ) And, I ask, if it is at all possible, that you also shop only at your countries equivalent to a "$1. store". ( i.e. 1 ERO store) If there is no such thing in your country, please do your best to conform to as many of the rules listed here, as possible, pertaining to budget, and of course all of the other rules listed here would still apply.

If there really is no such thing in your part of the world, and you can't get the stuff online, or have a friend send the parts to you, then the rules do say, that for international entrees in that situation, some flexibility to the rules may apply. Since your working with Euros, you would still have a 20 Euro (before tax) budget, and each item would have to cost 1 Euro (before tax) each, but the store they came from would just have to be as close to a "1 euro" store as you an come. And of course all the other rules would apply.

I would appreciate it though, if you come as close as you can to a "1 euro" store. I've been pretty strict with US entries about things only come from "$1 stores" because I know we have them over here, and if there is not one in their area, that it wouldn't cast that much to have the parts shipped to them. I've worked the flexibility in for international entries, because I know that just because we have something here, doesn't mean that there is an international equivalent in all other countries. And, I wouldn't want to exclude a member, just because they live in a country that doesn't have the good luck of having a really cheep place to get junk.

Also, I know, at least in my area, back when we did this kind of thing years ago, we had tons more "$1 stores" to choose from" now it's mostly "Dollar tree" and a few "Dollar Zones" witch does make it a little tougher, but I do still think there are parts to be found out there.

I’m not really a big fan of buying stuff on the internet, I wanna see and feel what I’m buying.
I’ll see what I can find, the contest ends in three weeks, so I still have some time to find a junk store and to make the lightsaber.

I totally understand, I feel the exact same way. 80-90% of what I buy online disappoints me in one way, or another. Anymore, I try to at least check an item out in person at a local stare before I by it online, so I know what to expect.

I just offered online buying as an option, so that those that don't have a "$1 store" in there area, would still have a chance to participate.

Good luck with your saber. (same goes for everyone else. :) )

Well a fruitless weekend spent trawling Pound Shops in the area. Unless I can figure out a way to make a lightsaber out of cookies, chocolates and discount soda, I think I'm SOL. Seriously, half a dozen stores between the town I live in and the next town over and not a single item that could even remotely begin to look like a hilt. Just lots of discount food items. Are Lightsabers made of confectionary allowed? Or would that be more of a baking competition? :rolleyes

Yeah, you are allowed to use food items. That's why the rules say you can us things like chocolate for molding, and/or casting. You just might not want to try to lathe a year old chocolate bunny, into a saber. (oh, what a mess that would be.)

Gum gets hard (ish) again after chewing. A person could chew some gum, sculpt it, and allow it dry back out. (a little nasty, but allowed. )

Or a peanut-brittle saber.

Or a pop sickle saber.

Or, if you work in some kind of foundry you could always recycle the aluminum cans pop, and other items might come in, into aluminum rods. (ok that one is a long shot, but hey some folks around here have really cool jobs, and do suff I would have nev er thought you could have. :) )

If they sell ten foil, you take it of of the box, and wha-law, you have a shinny metal tube. or if they sell some of those heavy foil containers, for backing (the kind folks take food to parties in.) You could flatten that out, and role it up, or around something, to get the same effect.

Just sayin' there are always options.

All these ideas, goes for all of you, of course, I'm not trying to help out just one member here, if any of you are having trouble, feel free to use any of these ideas. I of course encourage everyone to come up with their own ideas, but sometimes you just need a little push to get you started. :)

True, but I would pay good money to see the video :lol

Going to try another circuit of the stores after work today. As stock changes on a daily basis all I need is one thing to act as a base inspiration and I should be off.

Went to Dollar Tree today and man did I get some looks with all the stuff I was picking up trying to figure out if it could be useable. :lol This is going to be great!

I'm in, I've already started!

Question: You're allowed to use your own paints, but can you use paint mixed with latex in order to add texture?

HM! that's a really good question. I think that would be fine. As long as the latex, and paint, are only being used to put the finishing touches, or to assemble the saber, I don't see any problem with that.. You just can't use latex you already own to mold/cast the saber, or parts for it.

Well, we're right around the half way point of the contest entry period already, and I hope everyones sabers are progressing as they like.

Board registration has opened up, and will be open through 11/30 If there are any "lurkers" hanging about, or if you have friends that want in on this contest, but are not yet members, now would be a great time to join the boards. :)
