TFA Graflex Research (That's a Graflex, right? Force Awakens teaser trailer #2)

Man, with the better cap, I am unsure again as to which direction the thin traces are pointing. On that saber (which I agree could be CGI) the traces could very well be going to the right.

@roygilsing, which scene was it that you recalled seeing right-side thin traces?

It's very tricky and very brief; it's when Maz hands over the saber to Finn after Rey rejected it. I've double checked it with the lousy cam version that is available.

Here it is. This is what Roy based his schematic on which has right handed traces.

I'm not saying it "could be". I'm saying it IS, with 99% certainty. And the reason is, in this particular scene the saber is seen being force pulled through the air and the way it's shot makes it clear this close up is all CGI :)

I guess it comes down to if you want to make Finn's saber with the longer grips, or Rey's saber with the shorter grips.

Finn seems to mostly have the saber with the longer grips that go all the way down to the end of the tube. Even the 'snow' saber is Finn's, as it was thrown from his hand into the snow.

Rey's saber is the one seen in the box, the one she touches that was calling out to her. It's the saber that has started her on the first steps of her journey, and it has grips that are short on both ends.

I'm going to make Rey's lightsaber. Everyone else can make whatever version makes them happy.

Boba Fett's lightsaber? :D

:p

Maz hands over the saber...

I keep following this thread because I think it's interesting, even though I don't feel the need to add a TFA saber to my collection. If I did though, it would definitely be the Maz's Box version. (Or as James aptly calls it, Rey's saber.) It's clearly the number one money shot of the saber in the whole film. Sure, it gets other close ups, but that whole reveal scene is all about the saber. It's THE saber.

Also I don't think it's useful to try and "name" the different versions. (Yet, anyway.) It's useful to have a list by scene like Roy made, but names try too hard to simplify something that's never that simple, and in doing so could just lead to more confusion. (See: Dagobah saber)

Anyway, carry on. :)

I'd really hoped that in a contemporary movie with copious high-def images available to us that this would be cut and dry. Silly Cayman.

I just want to point out that the indoor Maz/Chest saber is initially found and touched by Rey, yes, but then it is eventually shown and then handed to Finn while indoors, and Finn actually handles this Maz/Chest saber for much longer than Rey. So in my head, I can't call label this saber as Rey's saber only.

Likewise, there's no reason to think that the lightsaber which smacks into Rey's hand in the dark woods when she force-pulls it, and before it is ignited (at which point stunt sabers took over for much of the fight), was not the grips-to-end version already used in other outdoor scenes and specifically already being used in that dark woods snowy location. This grips-to-end version is the saber that she doesn't just touch briefly, and then reject, but finally embraces, while the "Binary Suns" Force Theme swells. So listing this saber as Finn's only. Again, can't make that work in my head when she's holding it for an extended time during a pivotal scene, and this contact last much longer than the brief touch on the chest saber.

To me, the indoor hero is seen/handled by both Finn and Rey, as with the outdoor one, so it's just not as simple as labeling each by one person's name.

Btw, the final saber used on the Isle of Skye when Rey extends her hand towards Luke...you have to still frame it to catch which version it is, but to my eye based on going frame by frame...grips-to-end all the way, further supporting that this saber can also be considered "Rey's saber" just as much as Finn's. In the end, though, we may discover that a third hero exists.

I'm torn. I want the saber she's holding while standing in the snow when the Force theme swells and which she extends towards Luke. But I also don't want to alter the glass eye, and I'd really like to make a nice chest display for it. Decisions, decisions...

All that will reveal is some previously obvious part turns out to be super rare and/or expensive. I know how this #$%^@# hobby works! :lol It will turn out the grips are made of meteorite or the disc under the d-ring is a hundred year old liberty dollar or something.

*Goes straight to ebay*

Hmm meteorite, hmm over 10 000 hits, and a lot of them are cheap - 4K, let's rock.

:p

In the first pic posted with Maz holding the saber up to Finn the grips are short and don't go down the end of the tube.

Correct. It's the same one as in the chest. The hero version has only been used indoors.
The second hero (as I call it for a lack of a better name) has only been used in outdoor scenes.

As mentioned, I based the traces on both the Launch Bay version as what I thought was visible in the handover moment from Maz to Finn. But it now seems that the Launch Bay card is a copy of the mirrored CGI version and I copied that same mirrored version. You could say it's still screen accurate, since the flying hilt has it!

If it's agreed that the flying saber has right-side traces, then I would think most would want that version when recreating an outdoor (grips-to-bottom) hero saber. The indoor hero handed to Finn from Maz would get the left-side traces...One more difference in these two versions...
