Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (2014)

Teenage Mutant Ninja Frogs or Snails, but Turtles? Come on those aren't Turtles!.......I don't call this a childhood rape, just another chance not taken to create something Epic, it can have so much potential, but it's like they're not allowed to turn it into something that jumps on the Big Screen like the way it's supposed to...the same goes for Transformers......How long will it take before we get to see another "Transformers Movie" franchise for instance, where the Bots don't look like Animated Scrap Heap,in maybe ..never? As for the Turtles , they look too much like a Hip Hop Gang, that's just not cool!
 
I will say that anyone who remembers the original movie(s) as some kind of brilliant work of art, or wants a live action version of the original cartoon, well...I don't think I'd know what to say about that. I don't think this movie is going to somehow betray that rich heritage because, well, they were stupid.

What I DO want is something that approaches the tone, plot, and general quality of the original comics. They're easily the most interesting and artful incarnation of the turtles. I actually really liked the 2002 series as well. So, I'm not UTTERLY as horrified as I thought I'd be by that trailer. I am annoyed as crap that Shredder is a white guy. My main sticking point is the Turtle design though. It's so unpleasant it'll be hard not to be distracted by it the whole movie.

And Fox is a bit too runway model to be April, who I saw as a plucky, spunky MOS Lois Lane type. Not that I assume all gorgeous people are dumb or anything, not being sexist. I just never perceived April as glamorous model. More girl next door with ambition.

Very cautious optimism...as with Robocop, I'll wait for some reviews (skipped Robo).
 
I was prepared to hate it, but really after seeing the trailer its not much worse than the live action series from the early 2000s.
 
For those who are disgusted by this new take on the Ninja Turtles, just think how fans of the original black and white comics must have felt when the goofy 80's cartoon came out :)

perhaps..but that comic was so underground, most of us found the 80s series first. I was almost horrified when I saw the ugly looking 80s comic. Of course, I've since come around to appreciating it ;o).
 
Yea, the original comics were lesser-know to the majority of the fan base, however, as stated above, some of us (myself included) discovered it through the cartoon. Yea, it's cheesy and looking back at it at my age, it's just ridiculous, but I still love it. So the way I see it, if you're not going off the original comic OR similar to the cartoon, you're not doing the franchise justice. The live action movies, while again, extremely cheesy for the most part, are still considered decent in that aside from getting the visuals right between the characters, they actually put people in suits doing full blown fight sequences. They actually put A LOT of effort to get those films looking as good as they do. I'll surely watch the older live action films before recognizing the Teenage Mutant Ninja Bay Turtles.

The face in the trailer..I can't believe that he approved it. Doesn't even look like a damn turtle!
 
Just lower your standards, duh, it's not Shakespeare! Do what I did to enjoy the transformers. Huff some paint while staring at the sun then go into the theater. Or if you really don't want to see the movie, but still want that classic michael bay experience, go to the biggest, loudest frat party with a sign on that says "slap me in the face for two hours and steal $8 from my wallet ."
 
People realize that Michael Bay neither wrote nor directed this movie right? If you are going to whine at least place blame on the ACTUAL director of the film, Jonathan Leibesman.

Also, the writers of this movie sat down, worked with, got input, and had sign-off from Kevin Eastman...who they remain friends with to this day.

I'm just wondering where everyone saw the movie already. Man, you guys know everything about the plot and character development from a 1 minute trailer? Man, why even watch movies anymore when apparently you can get the whole movie experience and understand the ENTIRE movie in 1/120 of the time...amazing. What a time saver.

See you all there on opening night.

Producer...did you read the article? He had a hand in what goes on. Maybe it is just the style, but it seemed very similar to Bay with the Hummer being destroyed.
 
I wonder how many people would say 'quit your whining' if, perhaps...... They changed Bruce Wayne into a guy who gets drunk at bars at night, and lost his purpose. Or if Clark Kent was raised in Brooklyn instead of on the farm...cause you know, farms are goofy and so 30s. That would be 'updating' it to a modern story telling audience, becuase what worked for generations past isn't good enough anymore due to so many reboots.

Or is it only because the original idea is 'goofy' (like guys flying in spandex isn't), that turtle fans don't have a right to not like it based on what we've seen so far? Another phrase I'm getting tired of is 'haters gonna hate'.... usually said when one person's opinion doesn't agree with yours.

I never said he wasn't a producer. I said, "he neither wrote nor directed"..you know, the people that have almost all of the artistic input into the movie. Here's a little lesson for you...You realize that Michael E. Uslan has been the producer or executive producer on every single Batman related movie (live action or animated) since the 1989 version of Batman. That means he's been the Producer for awesomeness like 'The Dark Knight' AND turd films like 'Batman & Robin' and 'Batman Forever'. I didn't hear people shouting "Damn you Michael E. Uslan you raped my childhood memories!" when Batman & Robin came out...they placed blame on Joel Schumacher...as they should have. He was the director and it was his vision that was put on screen.

See, producers are glorified consultants/money men on most movies. I'm not sure how much time you've spent around movies or their making but most of the artistic vision for a movie comes from the writers and directors, so, if you don't like something...then that's where you should place blame.

"It seemed very similar with the hummer being destroyed"...come on...Michael Bay wasn't the first person to put an explosion or the destruction of a hummer on film and I bet you my life savings that he won't be the last.
 
Why can't Bay go after other generation's childhoods and just leave the 80's and 90's alone.

He should reboot Casablanca or some old John Wayne movies.

Michael Bay may not be directing, but many of the things we've seen so far (even before the trailer...character design, set pictures, etc) suggest a very heavy Michael Bay influence.

Whether that's because of his presence or because his movies have been so influential on this kind of project, I can't say. The amount of creative input a producer gets varies heavily from movie to movie, but I wouldn't say it's unfair to be frustrated at the fact that he's on this one. We all know how Transformers went.

That said, holy god, the turtle's faces are bad. It's made even worse by how great their bodies look in motion. Leonardo standing on the edge of the building is an awesome shot.

I was messing around with my admitedly bad CGI work...but it got me wondering what would make me excited to see the movie as a fan. first off, If you're going old school, go old school. Don't update the designs so much they don't resemble the characters, or scare children and adults alike. use old designs, give it new textures.....make it slightly more serious if you have to. I think it would have been pretty cool if the movie opened in Japan. Show a 10 minute prolouge that covers Shredders fued with Splinter, A shot with yoshi on a boat leaving Japan....and covers the turtles origins... End it with a shot showing Shredder meeting Krang and the technodrome for the first time. After that, take us to present day.

Again, if you're going full on old school like the movie seems to be doing....there are so many better ways to do it. you can make classic shredder armor look cool and threatening in a modern way without out right changing it. Imagine what the above could have looked like if it was rendered in realistic graphics....and you had images of planes battling the Drome (Which may or may not be in the new movie), and the Turtles battling foot bots on it.
 
I will say the voices sound great to me.

I rewatched Predators last night. Now with very few exceptions I do not care for Rodriguez at all. But I saw none of his influence on Antal's directing, and the movie ended up pleasing the crap out of me. So maybe Bay won't be puppet-mastering the director on this one either. Trying to be optimistic here!
