Great work, your SS is really coming together beautifully!
Love your problem solving!

Thanks, the encouragement really means a lot!! I have read your stalker thread many times over. Your sculpts were particularly jaw dropping. Loved the hand sculpt you did.

Re: Sylgian's Sith Stalker (WIP)

Vest update.

I have been slaving away on the sewing machine. Fitting and refitting to get my patterns right. I have only ever sewn two other things in my life, so its another learning process.

The good news is that the vest is coming along nicely and fits pretty great. I have also ordered a white lycra bodysuit to wear under the armor... you know... to simulate the zombie-like flesh. I intend to airbrush the white fabric to give it a more fleshy appearance and add some depth to the muscles.

And here are some progress pics.

I am liking the progress and the vest looks great. May I ask, where did you get the body suit? Does it already come with one piece hand/arm combo or will you have to add gloves?

Re: Sylgian's Sith Stalker (WIP)

I got the body suit from a site called second skin. Its a head to toe body suit with individual fingers. I may end up cutting it into something like a shirt, as I only need the torso.

It was like 30 bucks, with free shipping. I will let you know how it looks when it arrives.

Thats absolutely amazing.

May I ask what sintra is?

Thanks.

Sintra is a type of plastic used in sign making. It consists of a semi rigid foam with a thin coating of plastic on either side (I hope that's right cos I've just acquired four large discarded sheets of it from work :/)

Yes that is correct, I would add though that it is good to use in costuming because when you heat it up it becomes pliable and then when it cools down it becomes rigid again and maintains the new shape. This makes it a very good medium for costume making. I make my Clone Wars Anakin shoulder armor out of Sintra.

Note: Sintra is acctually a brand name of this type of material, however, since the material doesn't really have a name people refer to it as Sintra in the same way people refer to q-tips.

Also, I am not sure if all Sintra is this way or if it was just the sheet I got from whoever made it but the Sintra I was using seemed like it had a 'grain' to it. It was not a visible 'grain' but if I were to cut out a square and heat it in the oven it would shrink on one axis and after I would take it out it would be a rectangle. In order to work around this I had to cut out my armor bigger than the desired size and then trim it down to fit.

Cool, thanks for the extra info :cheers Its interesting to hear it has a grain of sorts, I'll bear that in mind when I get round to using it :thumbsup

I've come across it quite a few times and thought it might come in handy, but never considered using it for costumes. I'm chuffed I got those sheets from work now :)

Any favoured cutting tips you could share? I've not actually worked with it yet.

Re: Sylgian's Sith Stalker (WIP)

Now I never used the oven for the heating of the sintra. I just heated it locally with a heat gun. But, I never had any noticeable warpage. Perhaps it was because I was only heating small areas at a time.

The only annoying issue I had was that the edges of the cuts I made had a tendency to expand a bit when I heated them up.

Great stuff though. I plan on making the arm guard and claws out of it really soon.

Re: Sylgian's Sith Stalker (WIP)

You could use a hot knife/wire. I don't have one so I have always used my dremel. An utility blade would work if you don't have anything else.

Cool, dremel is my best friend too :thumbsup What cutting blades do you use for the Sintra? I haven't got many types of discs and wondered if the standered ones were ok or if I needs one with teeth (like the wood cutting types). Sorry to ask so many questions :/

The ones with teeth throw a bunch of dust/little pieces all over the place. I use the reenforced cutting discs. The standard ones tend to snap if it gets pinched. The cutting discs 'melt' the sintra while cutting so it is a much easier cleanup. Although, it smells a little.

Re: Sylgian's Sith Stalker (WIP)

Vest update. I have been chipping away at this thing whenever I can. I added the horizontal belts in the front of the vest. I am trying to keep the costume as few pieces as possible so a good portion of the belts are incorporated into the vest. More work to do on the back, but almost done.

here are some bathroom blurry-com shots. Turns out its hard to take a picture of your own back.
