Sylgian's 40K Space Marine [Completed!]

Re: Sylgian's 40K Space Marine [WIP]

Okay. I'm doing it!! POWER FIST TIME.

It's going to be articulated, and all the digits are going to be 3D printed. I have been modeling my ass off. The digits snap together, no tools required. There are also cable guides incorporated into the structure. I am in the process of printing out the first finger right now.Taking a massive amount of time to print though. Rough math says each finger will require 18 hours on the printer. So all the fingers will take around 90 HOURS!

Here is where we are so far.

Well that looks ****ing awesome! better try fist bump a hellboy!! would be awesome!

Re: Sylgian's 40K Space Marine [WIP]

The fabric is just something I found in the remnants section at Joann fabrics. Paid like $3 for it. I am not really certain what it is to be honest, but it looked great so I snatched it up.

I normally don't cross post on multi-forums, but I just had to double my comments and say again, well played sire.

Re: Sylgian's 40K Space Marine [WIP]

I'm running out of red plastic! ordered more today. sheesh. Slowly but surely we are making fingers. C'MON little printer buddy keep on chuggin! It's going to be another long night for my little buddy. I queued up another 4 hour print and its time for me to go to bed while my printer makes magic.

Re: Sylgian's 40K Space Marine [WIP]

I've been following this build since the beginning and joined the RPF just to comment on how bloody awesome this is! Can't wait for you to start laying down some paint! Loving the daily updates. Thanks!

Re: Sylgian's 40K Space Marine [WIP]

I have a little lunch time progress for you. Firstly, THANK YOU to Henrik Pilerud. His build is pretty much as good as it gets and his documentation is extremely valuable to those of us building our own armor.

Henrik was nice enough to include a great top down photo of his powerfist body template. I have taken this, straightened it, traced it, and adjusted the size slightly. I then made a scale model to get a better idea of the size. I have made the pattern Available for download here: https://docs.google.com/file/d/0B7XSVbvlJL1bZXViODdQeUlQUjQ/edit?usp=sharing

This is the scale model and the trace I created. Final template should yield you a powerfist body with an arm opening of ~8" in diameter and ~15" tall. This should be a smidgen bigger than Henrik's in size (near as I can tell) and fit a suit in the scale of 935. Everyone thank Henrick for his work.

Thank you Gary and thank you Henrik!!

Re: Sylgian's 40K Space Marine [WIP]

After the test of the finger movement I decided that the finger travel wasn't going to be enough so I designed this little device that I will also be 3D printing. One for each finger. Basically its a 2:1 gearbox that will amplify my finger motion when I pull the strings. NEAT!

I managed to print it out this evening. The action is a touch rough, because its printed plastic, but the little fella might just work. I will probably make some revisions to the design, but it does work, and I'm proud of it.

[update: David Barsi on Facebook has suggested a good alternative I will try as a substitute for the gear box. More on that later. Thanks David]

Its similar to burlap

Nice, I was going to mention that you'd need some sort of gear system, but figured you'd already thought of it or would quickly. :p

Re: Sylgian's 40K Space Marine [WIP]

The acetone transfer tutorial is BRILLIANT. Thank you.

I can't wait to see that power fist full size.

Re: Sylgian's 40K Space Marine [WIP]

ANNOUNCEMENT!
I have come to the decision that I will no longer be using my current 3D printied digits. Much of my progress will be scrapped. It was not an easy decision. The end product was simply too heavy. The weight was causing too much issue in the mechanics.

I will be redesigning all of the fingers. My current thoughts are too build a 3d printed framework for each finger and skin it with sintra. The framework will include all of the mounting points and hinges. It should be MUCH lighter. Live and learn, of well! smile.gif

Re: Sylgian's 40K Space Marine [WIP]

This is the inside of my Mark III finger designs. I have reduced the outer wall thickness to only 4 layers and reinforced it with a skeleton of sorts, now each section will be printed in 4 pieces and glued together. Once I complete the design I will be printing a test digit and comparing weight to to mark II digit.

and just for fun, here is a picture of the scale. Go big or go home.
