Sylgian's 40K Space Marine [Completed!]

Re: Sylgian's 40K Space Marine [WIP]

I'm very impressed with your 3D skills; I love how innovative you have been in this build. Is 3D design your trade or are you self taught?

Thanks! Yes. I have been learning as I go. I am very capable in 2D, I have been teaching myself some basic 3D as the need arises and because I have the printer, a whole world of things become possible. I'm still pretty green in the 3D but its fun trying out new stuff. Always improving, right?!

Re: Sylgian's 40K Space Marine [WIP]

Any update on this Sylgian? Scratch my Warhammer itch!

Haha, no new developments yet. Just been lurking the boards. I've been feeling the project tugging at me lately, so I will be picking things up again shortly. I did buy some rubber tread for the bottom of the boots yesterday!

Re: Sylgian's 40K Space Marine [WIP]

Glad to see you are back in the saddle, eagerly awaiting your amazing updates! Myself and a few mates are all over this amazing build!!

Re: Sylgian's 40K Space Marine [WIP]

Here we go. Break time is over and more progress is on the way. I added shoulder rigging to my chest piece. I built shoulder loops off of my internal skeleton. Fits like a glove.

Tonight I will be working on my arm rigging, battle damage and some padding for my helmet to get it fitting on my melon.

Re: Sylgian's 40K Space Marine [WIP]

I got my helmet fitting my head with a few strategically placed bricks of foam. My range of motion is surprisingly good. I was worried it would hit the collar. The forearms have had some detail added and I have also started adding battle damage to the arms and shoulders. I have to say, it was hard to start hacking up what I worked so hard to assemble cleanly. But after a few gashes it did get kind of fun.

I have been sewing stretchy black fabric over the ducting I am using for elbow joints as well. Pictures of my progress there are coming tomorrow.

Re: Sylgian's 40K Space Marine [WIP]

Today I stitched the stretchy fabric over my ductwork arm pieces and added some nylon webbing to them for rigging. I printed some hooks and they now hang from the shoulder attachment point. I have chosen not to use the upper arm armor. I built it, but it impeded movement far too much and sat awkwardly under the shoulder. It makes little difference, as you cannot see the upper arms anyhow.

I added some detail to the chest in the form of lines and a port thingy. I also added a decorative panel to each thigh.

More updates on the way.

Re: Sylgian's 40K Space Marine [WIP]

Tonight was all about the flexible, ribbed hip joints. It was an epic battle let me tell you. For some reason nothing was going right for me tonight. For such a simple element I had a lot of trouble. Much frustration.

The arm joints are made of 6" flexible ducting, these are made out of 10" flexible ducting with stretchy black fabric sewn over the top. The only difference is the size. I stitched the fabric on the arm portions by hand. These, I hot glued instead. The sewing machine was a bust, and I wasn't about to spend 4 hours hand stitching these ones. Lets hope the knees don't give me as much trouble. Those are happening tomorrow.

The ribs aren't very visible in the pictures, its better in natural light. I will be weathering them up a bit to add contrast in the end though.

Re: Sylgian's 40K Space Marine [WIP]

Nice progress. I really like all the structure that you've come up with. I may have to borrow some of that on a future build.

Re: Sylgian's 40K Space Marine [WIP]

So you're using insulation ducting... How hot does it get in there? There's a lot of empty space (at least I assume there is!) but I'd still think a lot of heat would get trapped.

The ducting isn't the insulated variety and is only around 15" long in any given section. Regardless, the costume is all foam, so I am sure it will be rather warm. I plan on adding an exhaust fan into the backpack to help alleviate the problem some, but I fully expect to sweat.

Re: Sylgian's 40K Space Marine [WIP]

Ah okay. I definitely recommend some fans, you can get 80mm computer case fans that run off of a regular 9volt for fairly cheap. If you put a couple in the chest then you should survive!

Re: Sylgian's 40K Space Marine [WIP]

Tonight was more work on the joints, the knees specifically. These were done in the same method as the hips. I am glad to say they went smoother than last evenings did.

The suit also looks pretty awesome hanging in the office. I can see light at the end of the tunnel. I have some more detail to add, a backpack to assemble, and the we are onto finishing!!! I cant wait for paint!
