SyFy's Heroes of Cosplay

Apparently they shut down half of the 10th floor for Dragon*con, held up elevators and the "heroes" and the filming crew were absolutely horrible to those people trying to meet up for photoshoots and use the 10th floor for what it's there for: meeting and gathering.

Why no one reported them to con and hotel security is beyond me. Holding up elevators and blocking stairwells is breaking a HUGE fire code. There's already enough trouble with the Marriott elevators as it is.

I'm hard pressed to believe all of this is fake. Especially from going to Dragon*con for so long and knowing alot of people who aren't friends with about 2-3 people from this show, that know their true colors.

Listen, ground rules should always be if you're in a costume you're no better than anyone else. Skill set or no. You treat someone like crap for no reason, you deserve the backlash you get.

I'll never understand trying to get famous for wearing a costume. Are you trying to get into the Union? Ok, but why would you showcase yourself as a "cosplayer"? Isn't that the teensiest bit unprofessional??

Go to a con. Wear a costume. Make a FB page to showcase it, sure. Make friends. Rinse, wash, repeat. That's what costuming at conventions was all about in the first place. All this Cheerleaders against the nerds garbage and showcasing it on tv, is really mind numbing.

What time during DC did this take place? I spent a few days on the 10th floor for some 501st events. Saturday night, we had our main get together and we saw across the way some type of photo shoot going on the opposite side of us. It did take an naturally long time (even for dragoncon standards) to get on an elevator.

As far as treating people like crap, I'm not surprised in the least. Generally the folks that are/see themselves in the same fashion as say, Ya Ya or the like (sexualizing the crap out of it) generally the worst types IMO to encounter in person. Personally witnessing these people's general interaction towards me or others is quite despicable. I personally don't see these types as real fans, but more as just attention ****** utilizing our hobby as a means to try and "get famous." A buddy of mine is "friends" with one of these types of girls and it makes me want to puke

Just curious, what would they have done exactly if you had told them to **** off and pushed past them? Did they have any officials from DC or the hotel giving them exclusive access? Unless there was any police or hotel staff there saying that, I'd have just pushed past them and told them to kiss my ass as I walk by.

I want to send out CONGRATULATIONS to Jinyo and Victoria on their engagement! I’m really bummed we weren’t able to meet you guys at Planet Comicon, but we wish you all the best! We did manage to chat with Yaya, Riddle and Monika while they were at the show. Riddle was a gem and I enjoyed speaking to her! Unfortunately, we missed the other cast members. I’m really bummed I didn’t get the chance to meet Holly and some of the other cast members. Hopefully there will be a next time. I do want to send a Thank You to Chloe Dykstra for the feature in “Just Cos.” With that said, I would hope you all would like to return to Planet Comicon to come hang out with us again!

We actually got a few seconds of air time on Heroes of Cosplay and it was nice to see our suits on the Television Screen. We originally were not going to be in the competition, but SyFy pleaded with us to enter the group category. Five minutes before we took the stage they told us we needed to do a skit. What the hell is a skit?? Iron Man doesn’t do skits! LOL It was a huge pain and we had our fair share of the crazy action, but there we are on the TV Screen. Hey Judge, Plug away man! love your costumes and love your attitude even better. Couldn't imagine how excited you guys must have been to see yourselves on TV. Will we be seeing any photos and tuts on how you guys built your props and costumes?

You know what the worst part about the show is IMO? It's not targeting us. It's not intended for this community and I fully understand why.

Think about how critical we are of SciFi movies. Avatar and Prometheus were debated and ridiculed here. Yes, we are not the intended audience.

I wish the show was more of a "how to". As an experienced costumer, I wish I learned more about the tricks and techniques.

I think the show is just "Lazy". There isn't enough substance so they rely on canned drama. There isn't enough of a market to have the show focus on the actual craft. I will keep watching. Of course getting sick at a con is real; con crud, brown bottle flu...I did "fall asleep" with a fake contact, OUCH!!!

I do think it will inspire more people to dress up for the cons. It is more fun. Congrats on the proposal!!!
I would like to see them interview interesting people and ask them how they made their costumes; how long, what material...

I read the blog and I am starting to see what you guys mean.

If you watch the episode carefully you will notice that the auditorium starts off packed. Then later you have a lot of empty sets in the auditorium.
So they film lower reaction shots of the room mates, and stuff instead of crane shots from above. They also cut to the start when the room was full a few times.
Pretty sure Yaya did their skit two times on stage. Once for the competition. Then again for angles onstage.

I went to the web site of that convention to see if they had the rules of their cosplay contest posted; They did not. So that convention appears to be unorganized compared to the ones I have been to.

At least the contest did not come down to crowd response for choosing a winner .

Trust me, if we had even remotely made it up to the 10th floor and witnessed this, I would have done the same.

The report came from the Dragon*con LiveJournal, under the pros and cons posts. I'd have to double check what time the witness(s) said this happened at, but I believe it was some time on Saturday.

But I'm sure if anyone would have tried to "infiltrate" the filming, they would have been shown in a bad light, like the Dr. Who girls and this voice over debacle.

Here's hoping this show won't be renewed. I've about had it with all of this -_-. Can everything just settle down and go back to normal please? Can we fight over the wrong types of glues used, or whatever.

It saved parts of our Dragon*con LOL. Did not leave the room with out a bottle stuffed precariously somewhere in one of our outfits. A quiver doubles as a decent purse! Glue, back up snacky crackers...if only I could have squeezed 5 bottles of water into it -_-.

I'm sure Celtic's already heard of this, but the crew at WETA hardly did any seaming on the costumes for Lord of the Rings. Mostly it was just Fray Check. I'm not crazy enough to do that but perfect seams aren't necessarily as important as making it look correct. If it takes perfect seams to do so, then hey! But if it looks 100% accurate and it's fudged, that's fine too. Certainly one lasts longer though.

That's how I usually look at it but I figured "hey, I've got this thing... might as well use it for once". First time in at least 5 years that it's come out of the case!

I will say, I got an upclose view of a screened used Legend of the Seeker costume that a friend purchased and worn at this year's Dcon, and damned if it ain't perfect through and through! Gorgeous craftsmanship there.

I line things I see fit to line. Finish seams that would frey, etc. But if it's a costume I know will be incredibly hot (lining wise), or it's not something that needs it and it's my own costume, not a commission, I'll let it fly. Like Astro said, if it'll last, it'll last. Don't not finish a seam if it's something like silk...phew the disaster on your hands.

The Yaya "FLIP MY @#$%$#^%$#% SEAMS!" thing was a bit much....-_-. They're judging you from what they can see. If the craftsmanship is plain as day, there's no need to flip the @#%#$^%$# seam....

Your costumes were some of the best I've ever seen, freaking flawless builds and I couldn't even figure out how you were walking around!! They sounded so crazy heavy! I wish I'd gotten a chance to talk to you all at the con, but it was total madness. Seriously, you guys win all the points in my book.

Agreed. We only got a few glimpses on the show, but those things look absolutely monstrous.

I seem to remember seeing a thread back around when IM2 came out with those suits at a premiere (Correct me if I'm wrong) and even back then I thought, "My God! Either those guys are jacked, are constantly in pain, or the suits are filled with helium!" Last night just cemented how insanely solid those things look. It's a nice foil to most of the Iron Man builds these days, which are tending towards lighter materials like foam, to see something that looks like it could take a beating, like it just stepped off of a comic book page.

Been on the RPF since '05.
Long time lurker... this was my old online name.

While I don't post much the RPF is My husband and I always recommend the RPF, on panels, or to other cosplayers as the place to go to learn from the best.. a place where you can find help tips and people who are true craftsmen. Which is what I enjoy about cosplay.

Couple things as I glance over the last couple pages.

1. Re Charity: I did a charity shoot during the filming and sold the print of the rocketeer (with permission from the Dave Stevens estimate) at PCC to help raise money for Hairy Cell leukemia , I also started Cosplay for a Cause which to date raised over $30,000 for Charity. I know its peanuts compared to 501st, but managing the whole thing on my own obviously as a volunteer. Both Monika and Yaya are also our current project to raise money to help domestic disasters. I also rehab baby squirrels. They took footage of some of this stuff, but never used it.

Other cast members are also doing their own charity

2. The Show Never filmed at Dragoncon, Kansas city was our last filming convention.

3. A lot of the skits at Kansas city were done twice (fairies, Loki/ff, us and a couple others, I don't remember much, I was pumped full of meds) it was much to my dismay as all I wanted to do was get back into my PJ and Lay down because I was running a fever and nauseous.

Castmembers, can you confirm or deny a SyFy presence at Dragon*Con? I know not all the cast were even at the convention, which seems strange if there was a photoshoot or filming happening.

Because as of yet, I've yet to see any credible sources for the alleged disruption on floor 10, besides second-hand rumours and online comments.

I haven't watched the latest episode, but from reading that blog, I've got to say: suck it up. Its a convention, don't be surprised when people show up with a more elaborate getup or a larger budget. The "people we talked to didn't know about the skit either" seems rather hearsayish to me, but I guess it is possible and would be annoying, but reality is that last minute changes happen at these events (and most large events in general, especially ones where the crew are volunteers and resources in flux). IMO it seems someone needs to take a page from the "cosplay is supposed to be fun"-book and not worry so much about the competition.

Because from the post it seems like she only went there to win, not to enjoy the experience, not to show off the craftmanship and not even to hang out with her new Whovian friends. It probably really sucks getting shown as a villain on tv, but you knew there were cameras and you still chose to engage in childish behaviour while they were rolling.

I've only been to one anime con locally and I question if the judges were drinking or not as some of the less impressive costumes won. Hopefully this show doesn't renew, it makes costumers and the hobby look bad. Which knowing scifi is probably want they wanted to do.

I can confirm 100% Heroes of cosplay was NOT at Dragoncon. Our last day of convention filming was Planet comic con.
