SyFy's Heroes of Cosplay

The bigger question in this thread is, what is a "Sexy Noun"? A sexy School House Rock costume? :lol

:lol

Actually, it's just my term for "I'm a Sexy [insert noun here]." I see people dressed as "Sexy" pretty much anything you can dream up. I'm a sexy cat burglar, Freddy Krueger, hot dog, playing card, etc. The point is, it's a fig-leaf of a costume to justify the "sexy" aspect, and it usually requires zero thought.

Becky Young during the heyday of 1UP.com garnered a lot of attention by posing with various gaming devices and trying to call herself a gamer. When called out on it, she was defensive and argumentative. She used that attention to get a job at 1UP as a community rep when they still had offices in San Francisco. And she still knew next to nothing about video games or related media. She then parlayed that job into a PR position with Tommy Tallarico. Tallarico is a video game composer and best known for his VGL concert series.

So she followed the sage advice of any employment professional: 'Dress for the job you want, not the job you have'. Sounds pretty smart, although somewhat dubious on her part but I guess it worked.

I don't know her, I discovered I had taken her picture several times at SDCC because of her costume not knowing who she was. She seems okay to me, but I only know her through what is shown on the show.

Huh. I mean, ok, I guess, like you, I don't really see a ton of difference. Granted, I'm not examining the stitching or the sequins or whatever on the outfits, so I can't tell from online pics which is the better costume, but it strikes me that both are coming at it from the perspective of sex appeal. Which, hey, is fine. You wanna rock teh sexay look, go for it. But to say "I'm better because MY costume has MORE effort" when both have effort involved...yeah, that just strikes me as a load of crap.

It's one thing if you're showing up to Halloween in your "Sexy Noun" costume that's clearly storebought and has no personal connection to you. I don't have a problem with that, per se, but it doesn't impress me. On the other hand, if you put effort in and still look sexy, I respect it. The posturing and rank-ordering is the part that strikes me as silly. But hey, whatever. I'm just eating my popcorn, watching the crowd watch the show.

My post may have been confusing. Let me reiterate.

Yaya picks costumes that show cleavage originally and puts in a lot of effort to make the costume look nice. She is showing cleavage, but so do the characters she picks, so she doesn't have to spend time on making her boobs stick out. She is known for having great quality costumes because she can focus on it, not her body.

Jessica takes a character and spends more time modifying it to show off her body. She still puts in a lot of effort, but it's to make a normal character look sexy with tons of skin. She doesn't have to have as high of quality costumes because she is showing off her body, not the costume.

Both show cleavage, Yaya just thinks her method is more respectable. I dislike both of them, but Yaya has a point in there about using your costuming skills instead of your body to get fans.

But she picks costumes that show off her boobs, so who knows who is in the right/wrong/whatever. They are both ridiculous.

She said there is a balance. Like Riki said lil girls poison ivy camel toe was sorta obvious.

Yeah, I mean, I understand the argument. But (a) I can't spot the difference in the quality of their costumes (although I haven't spent a ton of time comparing), and (b) I think it's silly to say "MY booby-focused costumes are just that way by happenstance. YOUR booby-focused costumes are that way by design, and the design suffers...for some reason...because of it. And anyway, you shouldn't focus on your boobs or people won't pay attention to the quality of your costume." Said by the girl whose costumes just "happen" to focus on her boobs. I mean, I'm not saying she can't bring the quality when it comes to workmanship of the costume itself, but if the notion is "Don't rely on sex appeal because if you lose that, no one will care," then why not follow her own advice, ya know? I've yet to spot a picture of her online that doesn't emphasize sex appeal.

Moreover, like there's something wrong with emphasizing sex appeal? To me all this business about how it should be about the craftsmanship is puritanical posturing. You wanna be sexy? BE SEXY. Embrace it. Don't try and BS people by saying "Ah, but my bust-enhancing corset has double-stiching and is made of the finest sourced Sardinian leather available." If you want to focus on the craftsmanship, ok, fine, but don't pretend that the sex appeal isn't part of it, too.

Ask yourselves this:

Would Yaya Han be on this show if not for her cleavage? I'm not saying that she doesn't do good quality work (or have someone do it for her, or whatever). I'm honestly in no position to judge that. But did they pick someone who's kinda plain looking but makes amazing costumes? No, they picked the hot girl who emphasizes her chest in all her outfits -- who also happens to be (apparently) good at the craft side, too. So, saying to someone "Don't play up your sex appeal" when you're playing up your sex appeal....

Exactly. But to turn every character into a bikini is a little ridiculous to me. For anyone to say that Jessica is good at making her costumes is giving her way too much credit. She wears bikinis around a bunch of fanboys and thinks she's awesome. Of course, that's what fanboys want, but to think of herself as anything but a bikini model is stupid of her.

I don't like Yaya for the same ego problems. She thinks she's a god among nerds and she's not.

I just was joking.

So many people coming down on Monika for what she said last night. If they only knew the kind of person Becky Young was during her time at 1UP and with Tommy Tallarico and how she gained her notoriety back then.

nevermind, just saw explanation above.

i take it you've not actually seen any of the proper costumes she's made?

great steampunk harley, injustice harley, mad mokki, deadpool to name a couple.. yes they're sexy costumes (in as much as she's wearing them) but they were all made by herself.

she definitely has talent beyond her chest.. perhaps not always a good thing but she's said herself she's obsessed with cleavage and likes doing chars with plenty going on up front. she likes doing it so who are we to say she shouldn't.

just because it's 'sexy' doesn't mean the craftsmanship is any less valid just because there's less material ;) sometimes those are the hardest as there is no where to hide

She's known for her cleavage, which is what Yaya was saying. Regardless of her costuming skills, she's known for her boobs.

To be fair that's all I see when I look at yaya.

Seems rather hypocritical to me but this has all been said this before so no point labouring the fact.

I really want to see that viral video. As for Monika, that was a really stupid thing for her to say, but she's young. On the other hand, she should wait until she actually wins something before she gets high and mighty. Or has she won something before she ended up on this show?

I would love to know how much of the drama and antagonism is manufactured with creative editing. And when will I learn to stop watching reality shows?

Sent from my Etch A Sketch.

She's not young enough to excuse acting like a 15 year old spoiled brat at 20/21 years old. I know there's tricky editing on these shows, but she and Victoria come across as absolute nightmare-people.

I'm actually kind of surprised Victoria hasn't popped in to tell her side of the story. They're either going along with a story, being edited a certain way, or presented exactly how they are. I'm not going to judge someone based on how they appear on TV. Still, by the time you're 19 you should know how to talk to someone and even if you don't like them, know how to turn them down without being a complete jerk about it. That is unless there's some other drama between her and Becky we don't know about.

I'd be inclined not to think too harshly of her if I was just going on snippets of the exchanges that the HoC producers decided to use for the final edit, but every time she does the "confessional" style to-camera things she end up just talking **** with absolutely no hesitation about the other people on the show.

What really convinced me that she is probably not a very nice person is the way she speaks to her mother. I'm only 24 and didn't grow up in a particularly conservative home, but seeing her treat her own mom like garbage made my SKIN crawl.

All I can say is that ActiBlizzard deserves her.

I second the mother thing. She seems like a rude little pip. I think her mom just asked if she needed anything. If that was my kid she would be cutting and sewing in the alley. Because thats where her cardboard box she would be living is was located. Sorry this show just seems like one of those train wrecks that you can't not watch. But enough about crappy sci-fi channel reality shows. Hello peoples. First time posting. And sorry if anyone who lives in a box in an alley was offended. And by the way that Yayo character even though she seems dumb as a rock and as shallow as a puddle can keep parading around in her costumes as much as she wants.

They also should have made the show about Jinyo. He's a alsways wearing cool looking t-shirts and you can't not like a guy with Han Solo jeans on.
