SyFy's Heroes of Cosplay

I like the way Volpin and Punished props have made their blueprints available as prints or digital files, a very affordable product and a good way of saying "thank you for the hours of free content you've put out"... and personally I'd be more likely to buy one of those than a photo of them in costume.

If people would pay me for my autographs, you can sure bet that I'd be selling them. So I don't fault the people who do it. I have no interest in buying one myself, but obviously there's a market for it so why not.

I get people taking photos of a good costume, something along the lines of showing someone later, "wow, you wouldn't believe how much work this person/group did recreating _______ ..." THAT, I totally get. I've had plenty of people taking shots of me in my BSG stuff because so often people think I bought it at the auction (I didn't, it's all fan made, but very authentic to the show, my BDUs even fooled all the ladies who made the original uniforms for the show, high praise indeed!). Either that, or getting ideas for themsevles later on. Either makes perfect sense to me.

I agree, you can't really fault the people selling the stuff if there's a market. It's the idea that people would pay for signed photo OF A FAN that leave me utterly baffled.

Oh, can someone PM me or contact me offline on what a "beard" is and why it's derogatory? I've never heard that before, and I'm really not up on all the fan vernacular, having been out of this hobby for a long time (longer than many of you have been alive)...

I don't mind posting the definition here, since I find its use so over the line that I might as well call the guy out on using it... a "beard" is a term used by bigoted dicks to suggest that someone is the opposite-sex companion to a gay man/woman who is trying to hide their identity. So he is probably making a suggestion about the nature of Jessica and Holly's relationship. I would have thought such slurs were a violation of RPF guidelines?

With all the close up shots of the ladies' parts while they're getting dressed I'm starting to realize why they aren't featuring costumes by many of the guys...

I had no problems with the butt shot, but I thought the "Hey she has camel toe!" ZOOM! was too much. I'm a guy and that made me cringe. It came off as super creepy. I think if the one girl told her we would all get the picture of what needed fixing without the camera zoom.

They just wanted to make sure we knew they weren't faking it, so that we wouldn't think they were contriving drama for our entertainment. ;)

Man why don't people just dress up because it fun and not get all worked up over the fame and money thing. While it would be nice to have a show that shows how fun it is. The whole cosplay thing just gets people worked upped and want to do it for all the wrong reasons. Just go out and have fun with it. Fer Pete's shakes

Now, that is a much clearer rundown of the process, good on him, he should have gone through that in the first post.

I do have to disagree with the "pulling out contracts is stupid" point. It's about being professional, nothing else... I've never met a full-time photographer or even part-time model who didn't appreciate the need for these things to be cleared up in writing, no matter the scale of the job. Always struck me as common sense.

The most recent episode was far more palatable than the previous two. More about getting the costumes correct than all the silly, manufactured drama.

Hasn't Riddle had that Rocketeer costume awhile? I swear I shot her in that a few years ago. And is it me, or does she comes off as the most normal, for lack of a better word.

I heard that the show is having the cast recreate some of their work for the show. So they may have been in the costumes before, but they were remade so the show can film them making them.

yes that's right. syfy said they wanted to show off some particular costumes they'd already done and picked a few out for them to improve for the show. the tron dress is a good example as thats gone through about 4 versions so far

probably explains the lack of 'the build' content (shame)

I agree there needs to be more guys on the show. Right now it feels like its a female only hobby with Jessie being the outcast.

As a side note, my wife walked in when Rikki was getting dressed and was like wtf are watching? After several attempts to explain what was going on, she just left with a loud UHHHH HUUUH. I'm sure I'll hear about it again later lol.

*heh* My huz and I were watching it together and I took a peek at him during that because I know he used to complain during Project Runway when the models were doing their fittings and I guess he has his own way of dealing with it now.... he was closing his eyes. My :angel

Tell him I was looking enough for two people. So I more than counteracted his closed eyes.

Yeah it's been awhile, not sure how long, but months at least. What's normal? I know most people that see me on the street wouldn't think I was into scifi stuff and then there's people who are the stereotypical nerd. By "normal" standards people think we're all nuts anyway! :lol

I've signed plenty of autographs as a Stormtrooper, mainly for kids, but those have been in character ("TK-408 Stormtrooper"). They don't care who "Scott Will" is.

Except for the teenager who saw me at the grocery store in my 501st t-shirt. It was shortly after I marched in the 2007 Rose Parade and he asked me about it. When I told him I was there, he got really excited and had his sister take a picture of me and him together. My one and only "celebrity" treatment. Very weird!

I think he ment that the others seemed more psychologically unstable. Took it out on their bfs when it didnt go right. Too up them selves etc.... she just seemed relaxed and felt natural. Unlike her bf. I enjoyed the show. Not necessarily all the people and obvious manufactured parts that every TV show has. But gave me an insight to Cons Im not fortunate to have. Just the middle quick cuts etc. Competitions and that.

Precisely. Riddle didn't seem like she'd slash her wrists if she lost. Those other two girls reminded me of the sisters in Ginger Snaps.

Just finished the Megacon episode. Oh, gawd, all the fake DRAH-MAHHHH! "If my styrofoam car isn't just perfect, I will lose all my cosplay credibility!" Frankly, I don't believe the completed car ever existed. (Conspiracy!)

I have no analysis or opinion of the relationship between Holly and Jessica (they just seem like longtime friends to me), but as soon as I laid my eyes on Jessica's husband when they went into the make-up shop, I started thinking of that thing that happens when you don't shave your face for a while. And when he opened his mouth to speak... (I guess that makes me a "bigoted Richard.") I was a little peeved that there was no big reconciliation hug between H and J. All that drama and no payoff. I think what bothers me most about the show is the way Riki pronounces "costume."

I appreciate the cast and despise the producers. God help me, I'm going to keep watching.
