SyFy's Heroes of Cosplay

My wife talks to her sister and her mom at least once a day, either in person or on the phone.

Women have relationships with other women that men don't have with even their best guy friend. I only have one brother who lives 25 minutes away and I'm lucky if I see/talk to him more than a few times a year.

What I've learned is, as a dude - never get involved with a cosplay chick. From the outside, it may seem like nerdvana, but the reality seems like quite the opposite. You will be absolutely ignored for weeks, or months, prior to any given con, and your one role will simply be as an ATM machine. You will be subjected to verbal abuse, and be treated like a second-class go'fer, while your work goes unappreciated.
It's not the just the show. I won't say where this went on, but a pal of mine was married to a woman into this stuff and you described his life exactly. One time I was talking with them about how many astronauts got divorces because they were never around and considered the wives as a logistical base for the home and little else. My pal (with his wife giving him the stink eye as he said it), said, "Well, I know how that feels..." He didn't look the least bit apologetic about having said it, either. She was one of those ones who did it for the attention (you all know the type) and picked costumes which were easier to make but brought more of the boys to the yard, as it were.
He was divorced within the year and has since married a great woman, they treat each other very well. His ex, I have heard, is pushing 40 now (and way more weight than she should, even for her age) and it still trying to squeeze into such outfits...

After seeing this episode I do have more respect for Riddler's Rocketeer costume. When I first saw it I just thought that it was just a sexy version she did for attention. I had no idea it was based on a comic version. I also didn't know she made all the parts to it. Also the lights don't win, the stockings did, well for me. :p

As to the Yaya thing, well again pot, kettle, black. She was bashing that other girl for her costume, but has her boobs hanging out whenever you see her.

I know, right? It's hard to believe I'm saying this but jeez did Yaya bring enough boob for the whole class?

If she wants to be rich and famous she should be doing ads for her plastic surgeon. Don't get me wrong, I'm not complaining but those were so 'in your face' they almost turned my regular TV into a 3D model.

Here's the build thread of the winner, Isaac from Dead Space, constructed by our very own dogface. EDIT: I got ninja'd by the man himself. Hiya David!

Thanks though, I was going nuts at the convention trying to get a good picture of it. That heretic armor was great.

I do not like the title "Heroes of Cosplay". How exactly are they heroes? None of them have even won yet. And why do all of them think they are going to win with a weeks worth of work when you have other people who worked months on their costumes? I also agree with the whole cosplay vs costuming thing: It should not matter if you get into character.

Here are my notes:
1. I was slow motioning through all the crowd shots to see if I was visible. I was not. But I did see someone dressed as Rudy Rhod from Fifth Element and decided that all reporters at cons should be dressed as him.
2. Poor Becky. When they showed her saying she should also have a car I thought, "something goes wrong with that" because she obviously did not have it on stage.
3. I thought Holly was great with the Galaxy Quest character. At the convention I thought it was great when she walked up on stage hiding behind the foam alien. I do not remember a delay when they called her on stage or at least a very small one and I do not remember her doing the alien voice except when she was first asked a question.
4. Jessica. I never read Tank Girl but I was familiar enough with it to think she did a good job. But I'm not a Tank Girl fan so I did not pay much attention.
5. Riki. Oh baby. Uh, anyway. I do not remember her freezing on stage when they asked her questions. I could have sworn she launched right into her speech about what all she did. I think she might have been the one Gigi made a pass at, but I'm not sure.
6. They left out that the contest started late because they were still setting up cameras.
7. They left out a LOT of great costumes and the winners in the other categories. There were also prizes for kids and that went to a kid dressed as Dr Doom. And you heard the crowd reaction to the Guardians of the Galaxy (group winners), at least for the two seconds that they showed them.
8. I thought they had the top three on stage, not sitting in the audience, and one of my pictures seems to agree.

I can post some bad pictures of the other winners if wanted.

She should lose points because the seams are not straight.

Really, bro? It depends entirely on your relationship. I've been with my husband for 7 of the 10 years I've been cosplaying. And yeah, I ignore him for hours, sometimes weeks while I'm working on costumes...But he ignores me for hours to play video games and has no issue with the time I spend on my costumes. As far as being and ATM...well, dude. It sounds like you were in a pretty ****ed up relationship. Responsible cosplayers are perfectly capable of funding their own costumes. :| Sounds like it was a problem with the person, not the cosplay.

And I don't know if it's editing, script, or reality, but it definitely seems like the women wear the pants in the relationship. I have no problem with a strong woman, but if the show didn't say that those guys were their husbands, I would have guessed gay BFF, at best. Are cospaly chicks drawn to whiny submissives, or is it the other way around?

And what's the deal with crabcat? Are they in a secret "special" relationship? More power to them if they are, but they seem a little too into each other, if they aren't. I know one of them is married, but he wouldn't be the first beard, in history.

-Fred

heh i got the same impression.. the husbands seem to really be 'whiny submissive' as you say.. at least that's how the show portrays them. they are (appear) to be treated like crap.. more like employees than loved ones.

was getting a bit irritated with the two of them.. had no idea they were both married. the husbands must have to deal with a lot of crap with the amount of issues those two have. it's not nice to say but i wish the show hadn't concentrated on it so much.. it really put me off them and i found myself wishing they'd shut up moaning about self esteem, meltdowns and friendships being over just because they did their own costumes.. get over it sheesh! (and as said, I don't mean to be nasty but the show doesn't give you enough info to warm to them.. all you see is the big balls of crazy they both are without any context and it's not endearing.)

i'm sure they're no where near as bad as the show makes out but that's the problem. all the viewer sees are these snippets of concentrated crazy and it's not a good impression.

i REALLY wish they'd show a bit more of the processes they use when creating the costumes.. even if it doesn't go into detail. e.g. riddles jetpack. we know it was cast, but i would have loved to see a 30 second clip of her sculpting the master, making the mold, pouring the resin etc.. just showing them doing it. i don't need a masterclass but showing viewers an overview of whats actually involved would go a long way to showing the effort they put into it.

was gutted for becky that the airport lost part of her car.. i'd have gone mental, totally understand her other halves reaction. all that work and time ruined because of some shaved monkey in airport security.

regardless of its flaws, the show is interesting. annoying at times but we're all talking about it so good or bad it's successful tv

I have spent a total of 5 minutes watching the show, and now almost an hour reading this entire thread..

It's definitely far more interesting reading all your opinions than actually watching the show!

And I agree with what I can tell about yaya, her Facebook is almost NSFW.. Not quite but almost. I doubt she should be claiming the same against anyone else!

At MegaCon, I was the Dr.Doom, the mini Doom was my son. I have to say I didn't know about the SyFy show being filmed until I was already backstage.
After finding out about it and watching the first two shows, I'm pretty happy I won anything at all, considering it was my first big convention.

2. Poor Becky. When they showed her saying she should also have a car I thought, "something goes wrong with that" because she obviously did not have it on stage.

My reaction, too. Car? What car? Recently, when I was talking about all the show contestants in the contest, I couldn't even remember Becky.

3. I thought Holly was great with the Galaxy Quest character. At the convention I thought it was great when she walked up on stage hiding behind the foam alien. I do not remember a delay when they called her on stage or at least a very small one and I do not remember her doing the alien voice except when she was first asked a question.

For some reason, the "late to stage" thing was something the producers invented. She was ready to go but they had her wait while I just called her name.

5. Riki. Oh baby. Uh, anyway. I do not remember her freezing on stage when they asked her questions. I could have sworn she launched right into her speech about what all she did. I think she might have been the one Gigi made a pass at, but I'm not sure.

I don't remember that either. I think it was edited to create drama.

7. They left out a LOT of great costumes and the winners in the other categories. There were also prizes for kids and that went to a kid dressed as Dr Doom. And you heard the crowd reaction to the Guardians of the Galaxy (group winners), at least for the two seconds that they showed them.

Due to age and liability, we awarded the kid's prize early so they wouldn't be on camera. We always do the kids in the beginning, though.

8. I thought they had the top three on stage, not sitting in the audience, and one of my pictures seems to agree.

We did. The shots of them reacting from the crowd was just when I called them up as finalists.

Definitely a better episode. I'm with some other members in hoping that in the future we get more glimpses at the process. The foam carving was good, but I would love to see someone killing their arms slush-casting a piece (even if it's only for 10 seconds) with a quick voice over from them explaining that's how you make hollow parts.

That is one of the most common questions newbies to casting have, and it would be a nice little PSA to get the phrase "slush-casting" and a thumbnail view of the technique on screen so that people who are interested could look it up online.

Another thing that could be cool would be replacing those shots of the costumers "morphing" into their costumes before the con with REALLY sped up time lapse shots of the full construction project, ending with the reveal of the whole piece, again, putting the emphasis on the process rather than the performance.

Bwahahaha :lol :lol :lol You ignore your husband for weeks, to play dress up, he ignores you for hours, to play video games, and I'm the one in messed up relationships? Geez, talk about being in denial. Maybe he immerses himself in video games, as subtle retribution for being ignored for a costume.

And I have no idea why you would assume that I let women use me as an ATM. I was merely pointing out the scene in the episode, when tank girl, dragged her beard into the costume shop and he said something to the effect "you want to make this costume, and I have to pay for it?".

Whoa. This place moves so fast that thread lifespans are measured in days? Quoting a week-old post is "necro?"

I am very old.

I was looking in pages, not days, but the last major forum I was apart of would massacre people for bringing up week old topics again, so I thought I'd toss a warning up. Us wacky youngsters, you know.

I really liked your Dr. Doom when they showed you on stage. The cloak looked great on camera. Wish I could've seen your son, that sounds way too adorable.

Whoa, man, calm down. First off, stop calling that guy a beard. You don't know if he is or not, you're just being rude at this point. Besides, I would think the fact that there is evidence on their blogs that the ladies go to separate parties from each other with their respective husbands means it's not what you think. You're basing your assumptions on a poorly-edited and chauvinistic show. Secondly, not all cosplay chicks are like that, and I've seen a number of incredibly successful marriages (10+) with either one or both members of the couple being cosplayers. It's something that needs to be evaluated on a case by case basis. There's plenty of really horrible women out there who cosplay, and there's plenty of decent and kind women who cosplay too. Besides, I'm willing to bet that there's male cosplayers with the same vapid awfulness who shouldn't be dated, though they're probably fewer and farther between. Maybe instead of going out with a chick because "OOOH BOOBS" and then finding out that was a bad idea you could pick cosplayers who look like they actually worked hard on their costumes. Just a suggestion.

I think women who are drama are drama. Women who are not drama are not drama.

I dated a girl years ago who made costumes (as a side business) and also wore costumes (she is a member here but hasn't actively posted in years). She was very grounded, humble, sweet, no drama and never asked me for a penny to buy fabric, supplies or anything. She saw it as a fun hobby and kept everything in perspective.

I think some of the girls on HoC do not represent all ladies who costume and also are in relationships with regular guys.

First off, I still hate Yaya. An action figure? REALLY??? What is wrong with this woman. Cover yourself up *****.

This episode was way better than the previous two. I have to agree that the 'costume morphing' clips are annoying as ****. Completely unneeded. They should save the final full reveal for when they come out on stage. It just seems like a cheap tv trick to show off the costume.

In response to people being in character, I don't think that should matter on the con floor while you are walking around the booths. On stage, sure. You're there to show off your costume and be remembered. Photo shoots? Sounds good. But on the flip side, if you aren't competing, why can't you just wear a costume and look awesome?

I'd rather stop and have a real conversation with someone then watch someone walking around talking funny and creeping everywhere.

I think the portrayals of those women on HoC do not represent them, either.

And one thing is relating a bad experience you've had with a previous girlfriend, another thing completely to then claim it to be true for all cosplaying females... then another thing completely to throw those characterizations onto specific people because you've watched 12 minutes total of edited footage in which they interact with their loved ones.

When I work together with someone I know well in a stressful situation, I know that I can be direct in my communication because they can handle it. Sometimes getting things right, on time, is the most important thing and I myself would expect nothing less than honesty and directness from everyone else involved. Now, I wouldn't want to see how some of those conversations would look and sound to an "outsider" who doesn't know the context, even without the editing :p

I think that there are certain situations where slipping into character while walking the floor is perfectly acceptable, like pretending to pay with rupees while dressed as Link or using an accent while talking to little kids, but most of the time it's both impractical and distracting, possibly even dangerous. Side note, if "being in character" means hitting or hitting on other con-goers, just do everyone a favor and stop. When did it suddenly become okay to walk up to people in full armor and beat on their helmet to strength test it? I'm pretty certain I was taught in first grade to keep my hands to myself.

The car piece being missing after TSA went through the box made me feel sick... it's a big nightmare traveling by plane with costume pieces to never know if anything is going to be gone through or broken or taken. And there it happened and it took out a big part of the costume. :(

With all the close up shots of the ladies' parts while they're getting dressed I'm starting to realize why they aren't featuring costumes by many of the guys...

Shhh, don't reveal the true secret of television or everyone will start doing it......
