SyFy's Heroes of Cosplay

Ya, my rents have a Bernina in their shop but i'm not allowed to touch the thing. Hmm, never heard of Husqvarnas... i'll check it out. Ty guys! :)

*creeps back to topic.... okay*

XOMG! Husqys are amazeballs! I bought a refurbished c1960 one in about 2000 and the beauty has got me through all my historic gear. The only issue with a metal work area is if you live in a cold and humid area (holler) the fabric will stick to the dew on your foot plate and other bits. No matter how much you clean it down. Easy to oil as it has proper little drip holes.

I figured it was a Brother overlocker due to the colour matching for the threads :)

Myself? I have the aforementiond Husqvarna, an Elna Loutus (mid 1970s) a Janome Homemaker (mid 1980s- my every day machine because I can pull it apart and make repairs myself- which I have, go me!), a Cascade I need to pass on or repair (engine smokes- not just oil on gears!) and two antiques- one Singer from the 1930s (electric but I'll be getting it serviced before plugging that thing in! Especially with a metal shell....) and a hand cranked german beauty pre WWI. The boxwood cover has amazing wood inlays. The Janome and Cascade do proper stretch stitches the rest don't. But I have a freaking ruffler foot!!!!! For the 30s machine but still... that sucker is about its weight in gold for buying new....
Then I have my Babylock overlocker (their last model before their automatic air threading) and an industrial Rimoldi, 1970s. A little harder to repair the industrial. I think I need to replace the top knife as it cuts plain fabric but not stretch which means one of the blades is dull or not in the right place. Possibly both actually. The lower blade has been replaced BTW :)

I'd love to add a coverstitch because it makes the best edges for stretch fabrics and makes straps and such.

"Unless you live in the Portland area , I would not recommend traveling here to do the Wizard World Con. Unless of course you are coming to see Portland. I would highly recommend the Emerald City Comic Con in Seattle. Tickets are on sale now! They've sold out the past couple of years..... "

Thanks for the advice Notbob....but I have never been to Oregon or Washington, I think it would be fun to check these places both out and if there is a convention that makes it even better....Mike[/QUOTE]

Becky has already Tweeted publicly on Monika's behalf. Not everyone has time to make a video, or cares enough. Becky's real life keeps her more than busy.
This is a TV show on Syfy (or Space), not a surveillance camera. Planet Comicon isn't a two-week con that is going on right this moment. Summer internships don't start in September.
If Jessica Nigri and Yaya release a video saying "don't believe everything you see on TV," it doesn't mean "everything you see on TV is real except for what Yaya said about Jessica."
And for someone who hates himself for watching even a couple of these episodes, you are way too concerned about Becky & Monika's relationship.
Put down the remote and step away from the TV.

It's a relatively inexpensive Brother serger. Monika seems to think hers is a bit unreliable, but I haven't had any problems with mine.

Ooh, I struck a nerve.

See, I do honestly believe that 99% of this is scripted or stuff is filmed and then edited to make them appear worse. That being said, this is twice now that monika was trashing that Becky chick. Mix that with the fact that she didn't follow suit with a video of her own makes me unsure.
It's really a shame that there aren't more people "behind the scenes" that could clear up with monika has a hate on for Becky.

Honestly, I'm just embarrassed for you, Scareb.

This is the RPF. We're people who can tell the difference between entertainment and reality. When the rest of the world says "Ooh, he got a lightsaber!" we're the ones saying "interesting, looks like a Graflex flash handle."

And while we can get engaged in discussions that endlessly dissect Tony Stark's psychological trauma due to traversing the wormhole, if anyone actually posted
"See, I do honestly believe that 99% of Iron Man is scripted. That being said, Robert Downey Jr. didn't follow up with a video proving that he doesn't really have an arc reactor in his chest, makes me unsure.
It really is a shame that there aren't more people behind the scenes that could clear up if he has a real arc reactor in his chest."
they would be deservedly mocked.

Most RPFers can enjoy a storyline like "Oh no, Victoria stayed out drinking instead of working on her costume, and now she overslept!" but are also smart enough to notice there is conveniently a cameraman shooting her at the moment she gets up.

Also, there is no Santa Claus.

But the animosity between Monika and Becky IS TOTALLY REAL.

See, I fully understand that this show is all about entertainment. All my post was inquiring about was whether or not this drama between the two is real or written a script. Despite the fact that this show is blatantly scripted, real life will obviously trickle in. I also know that there's probably multiple scenes where they had to constantly reshoot for whatever reason, again that doesn't change the fact that the animosity could supposedly exist. Now I don't know if you're last line was sarcasm or not as tones don't exactly translate well via text but is it wrong for me to question it?

If it was completely serious, then is it so hard to believe that the cameras just so happened to get it where monika was a completely **** to Becky and there was no need to film anything else? I don't follow Becky nor did I do a search for her twitter account so I wouldn't know if there was any drama between the two.

So what's the problem here? Life trickles in. Is it so hard for someone that ISN'T on the show and has watched a couple episodes to believe that it isn't completely scripted? I'm not just an outsider looking in, I'm 50 miles away looking through a kaleidoscope. I know next to nothing about the cosplay world. The only cosplayer I knew of before this show started was Jessica Nigri. I'd never heard of any of the others.

The first time, no. The producers intentionally set out to fool you, so making that initial mistake is understandable.

But after repeatedly being told by insiders that NONE of it is real and that they are all playing characters, and yet you keep clinging to the idea that some of it must be real... well then that makes you the *******.

What occurred to me last night is that 'Heros of Cosplay' is pro wrestling for geeks. Same format, same drama, same fake rivalries. The producers just replaced the stunt show portion with costume contests. Instead of trash-talking in the hallway, we got trash-talking in the hotel room. Instead of locker room scenes we got build scenes in the studio. And now we've even got tag-teams building towards the big showdown!

Even the characters types are lifted straight from wrestling. You've got the reigning champion that's a big blowhard, the Heel, the hero, the underdogs, the comedic tag-team duo. Any of that sound familiar?

So please stop saying that it's edited out of context. It's not. It's edited exactly the way it was written with the actors playing the parts they were given. And that, by the way, is the appropriate term: ACTORS. They are not contestants. They are performers.

I worked Special FX for TNA Wrestling and for ScyFy. I know of which I speak.

Or do you still think that Stone Cold Steve Austin woulda won that big'ol belt if only them dirty Hardy Boys hadna cheated. :angry

Lemme help you out.....Jinyo was being sarcastic. This is from Becky:

I LOVE Monika Lee. She is extremely talented and such an amazing human being. Even best friends quarrel and argue. Please, never hate the actual girls on the show for things that you may see episode to episode. A) it's a TV show and we are all human. Bulls in china shop .... don't throw stones .... etc.

Personally, if it's all scripted and fake but presented as 'reality' then my opinion of the cast goes even lower because they trash and act this way in the pretense of 'reality' just to make a buck or become mildly famous. If you can't present yourself as you are, then don't do it. Have some integrity.

That's the whole point of reality tv is for people to think they can make a quick buck or get their image out to help get famous. Case in point any of the Real Housewives shows, the stupid Kardashian show, and everything else, hell even Pawn Stars, Hardcore Porn, and American Pickers is all 100% staged now.

Haven't watched a minute of Housewives or Kardashians. Watched some Pawn Stars more for the interest of seeing some interesting historical artifacts, Hardcore Pawn was amusing because I'm sure Detroit really is like that, and American Pickers was cute but at least they don't do the drama or personal **** that the others do. I'd rather 'real' reality TV any day instead of this crap where people act like **** to each other for 'dramatic purposes.'

All of this gumph raises a good point though.. we (well most of us) know it's all edited and scripted so don't believe everything you see but in that it winds me up a little.

I haven't been in this 'scene' for long, I've just started costuming, built a lightsaber here and there but nothing major (never even been to a con yet) but from delving into the interwebz I've found people like yaya, monika, jessica, rikki etc.. and was looking forward to seeing what they're actually like when doing 'their craft' rather than the awkward interviews greg does with them.

From my POV it's a real shame they're all having to play up to the camera and are portraying themselves in ways other than how they really are.

Yes it may be a show but the names of the people you're playing are your own and everyone bar those that know you personally are going to believe this is how you are. Millions of people now think a lot of these guys and gals are horrible people that treat everyone else like crap because they saw it on the show.

It's all very well if it was a character you're playing but when the character is YOU it becomes a lot harder to play the 'we're only playing a role' card.

As said, it's a shame as I was looking forward to seeing how these people are 'in real life' but that was not to be.

Also, I really hope if they manage to wrangle a series 2 they should spend a lot more time focusing on the craftsmanship side. i'd find that a lot more interesting than a bunch of people become walking stress-balls and lose every contest they enter.

I've got to say, in a lot of the "controversial" situations being discussed I don't think its necessarily even that the people on the show are following a script or outright acting. If you took half my conversations with good friends and edited them in the right way, it would sound as if I was being the biggest ******* to them. Context is everything.

For example, I work in a creative field and I spend a lot of time critiquing the work of others, or having my work critiqued... by people I have known for years and respect deeply. We have a relationship where honesty is valued above all else and no one is there to have their ego stroked. When there is a meeting in one of the creative teams, we don't spend company time dwelling on the positives, instead we get straight into talking about the stuff that isn't working and why.

There might be 20 things that are fantastic, but if we have 5 minutes to discuss the project with our creative director, we are going to focus on the 2 things that looks like **** and how to fix them. Now, film that, edit it nicely with reaction shots and a bit of dramatic voice-over, and it would sound like a group of five people tearing someone's work apart.

Similarly, in a group of friends pleasantries tend to go out the window because you know each other well enough to speak openly.

Not to derail this thread, but I just noticed your username, NotBob, and was wondering why it sounded familiar...then I remembered taking this picture of the car in front of me about a month ago...

...my question is: if neither of you are Bob, then who the hell are you?!

*****, you all need to Enhance your calm. All I did was question whether some of the stuff on the show is actually true. I didn't outright state that I believed the stuff was real.
