Supernatural - Creating John Winchester's Journal

You really shouldn't double post, especially something like 10 posts in a row with 1 image each, you can put multiple images all in one post. I understand you might be trying to get past the new user post limit, but there are better ways to do that.

On topic, the journal looks like Rick's work, so you know it's good. He gives you such a great base to work with. I can't wait for mine to get here.

The pins are Rifle Expert, The Army Aviation School Fort Rucker, Bronze Star, Purple Heart, USMC Good Conduct, Vietnam Service. Purple Heart is not in Jhorcher's picture, his is replaced with Combat Action pin.

Continuity and consistency are sometimes a problem with the journal in the show as are "fill" pages as previously mentioned.

In the first episode, we see the deputy flipping through the journal while Dean is in custody.

Here is a screen grab:

Here is my re-creation:

The problem here is that both pages use the same text, which is also seen clearly elsewhere in the journal. So I have re-created the pages as "screen accurately" as possible, but for my daughter's journal, I am going to substitute different text. I made the Tower Bridge photo in Photoshop to match as best that I could. I think it is important to create some of the "ephemera" from the screen journal where possible for authenticity.

Also, the "Alien" page is seen again in one of the more recent episodes (Season 8, "As Time Goes By") when the grandfather is looking through the journal and it is not matched with the same page as it is in the first episode. It is clear the the pages are often moved around by the prop people when it suits their needs. Many of the pages have holes punched on both sides, showing clearly that they can be positioned on either side of the rings.

You are just so mad talented. Your ability to replicate details so minutely and so accurately is astounding! I can't believe you're pretty new at this.
Have you always been artistic or are you really a master forger or something?

Thanks for the compliments. I am new to electronics but I am a graphic designer by trade. I find the attention to detail to be a lot of fun. It's like a puzzle to try and figure out what goes into a page and how the prop people created everything. Like finding the photo of the Tower Bridge from just the right angle and then working on it in Photoshop to match the prop. Details are my "thing".

:confused

Working on that small photo below the medals in the front of the journal. This one is still a work in progress, it is going to be very hard to get a good image. I need better reference but this is what I have so far.

I think you're doing incredibly. If you can zero in on what episode the photograph (or any pages you need screengrabs of) is in, I can get 1080p HD screenshots for reference for you.
I just need the episode, since it would take a very long time to watch the entire series again skipping frame-by-frame.

Thanks so much for the offer, that is very kind of you. I have the episodes in HD, the problem is is that there are not any really good references in any of the episodes. I have used the best one there is (I actually combined two shots), but until there is a closer, clearer shot of it in an episode, that's about the best I can do.

:)

What about the recent episode where we first see the HR in the journal? Isn't there a great shot of it there?

Yes, but unfortunately, we only see part of the photo as it is obscured by his hand and then he bends it up before we get a full view of it. I combined that partial with one from another episode to get what I have right now.

Wow, this is an amazing job. It encourages me to start my own prop. I'm a complete noob to this, but I'm relatively handy and crafty, so I'll give it a shot. Thank you for the inspiration.

I am insanely jealous of RPFKOV's skills! :thumbsup I just got done reading her EMF thread and now the journal!! :thumbsup :thumbsup All of the props I've read about you making are top notch!

Man, count me in as a customer if you should ever decide to put the pages up for sale.

that is amazing - book props always make me wish I had skill and patience
lovely to do as a mother/daughter project too

According to Dean in Season 1, Episode 9, "Home", the first sentence in John's Journal reads: “I went to Missouri and I learned the truth”.

The “I went to Missouri and I learned the truth” page appears in "Home" here:

Later in Season 1, Episode 20, "Dead Man’s Blood" we see it again next to a page of contacts on a different kind of journal page.

Here is my recreation of the new journal page with the contact names and numbers and the “I went to Missouri and I learned the truth” page. I built the "TODAY" page from scratch in Adobe Illustrator:

I am missing text from the bottom of both pages. I am posting my work in progress in case anyone can help me out with what it says at the bottom of either page. I am fairly new to the show, and I haven't seen all the episodes yet. Does anyone know of an episode where we see the text at the bottom of either page?

make some copies available or the emf's and then we'll help you...lol Actually not really sure if there's any eps right off the top of my head that shows the bottom of the page. If I come across them, I'll let you know.
