Superman renounces US citizenship

I don't see this ending well for DC comics at all. The crap's gonna hit the fan when folks see this. Maybe DC's trying to ruin the franchise before it goes back to the family of the creators.

ugh... probably trying to make him a citizen of the world. :angry

Good luck DC...you're going to need it.

This just makes me scratch my head. DC HAS to know this will cause a backlash. I wonder if they have something up their sleeves. If not they may as well cancel the book now.

Wow first Sgt Slaughter becomes an Iragi Sympathizer and now Superman renounces his citizenship. What is this nation coming to?:lol

You forgot about the GI joe group in the movie originally supposed to be a UN team too. Want to bet if this backfires they'll claim it wasn't the real superman or he was working as a special agent or something? I can't believe the writers would go with this idea, it sounds too much like the idea of the suits in upper management would come up with. I'm all for social commentary in comics but sheesh.

Yeah, I was just thinking about the GI Joe debacle. They're a real AMERICAN hero, dammit! If the whole world can enjoy a pointless British wedding (no offense), if the whole world can love Steve Irwin, if the whole world can love a Canadian Wolverine, then the whole world can enjoy an American superhero!

I am so pissed about this. I'm hoping the original creators of Superman come back from the grave and ****ing kill the entire management at DC.

The very point is Superman is an allegory. Of a foreigner who came to the US and integrated within the US, becoming a US citizen. That he stood for the very ideals of this country that became his adopted homeland. The ideals of truth, justice, individualism, exceptionalism, liberty, that a person could come to the US and become something greater than they had been before.

Maybe ironically the problem is that Superman hasn't left the US, but the US has left Superman.

I would have liked it better if he renounced his citizenship because our government no longer represents Truth, Justice and the American way... now that would have been a statement..

But globalism/citizen of the world dribble? :sick

That, I could accept. Because it would have been true. This global citizen **** smacks of One World government garbage.

I don't see what's wrong with Superman renouncing his U.S. citizenship if he believes it's the right thing to do. Works for me.

This is no different than removing the line "the American Way" from Superman Returns and I would even compare it to Marvel's choice to sheepishly change the title Captain America to just "The First Avenger" in other countries - didn't you all know - it's shameful to be an American nowadays. There's nothing to be proud of when it comes to the old red, white and blue -- those are yesterdays traditions.

Sad stuff. Sent an email to DC about this and also let them know I can't support their comics anymore. Not that my few ongoing comic purchases will hurt them but I can only really make a statement to a buisness with my wallet, so that is what I will do.:sleep

Unfortunately we aren't that shining city on a hill anymore. We only have ourselves to blame for that.

We have our government..and we have the American people. Two separate entities but the world sees us as one.
