Superman renounces US citizenship

Unfortunately we aren't that shining city on a hill anymore. We only have ourselves to blame for that.

We have our government..and we have the American people. Two separate entities but the world sees us as one.

I'm not one for "quoting for truth", so I'll say that I'm quoting this because I simply couldn't agree more.

lol Nice one Cessna. Part of what the panel about supes says would make sense where the government in the comics have been making it look like he works only for them but the global village crud kinda makes it bleh. And isn't that lady in charge of the Cadmus (sp?) project that keeps cloning him?

This ploy is utterly asinine. As far as I'm concerned, DC can head out and not let the door hit them where the good Lord split them.

"This is no different than removing the line "the American Way" from Superman Returns"

Brian Singer in the DVD interview for Returns noted that Superman was now a global franchise and could not be for the American Way any longer. THAT ticked me off so much, it was the killing note in why WB has been failing with the franchise.

The comic tried to take a more logical stance of the US was loosing focus on the American Way, which is why he dropped his citizenship. I can't say I disagree with the message American has lost its focus, but it is out of character for Superman to give up or not point out such by trying to influence more directly the core issue to change. He would be putting effort to champion the Administrations foolish tact and direction.

The comic writers took the easy way out and did a knee jerk plot line that again just does not fit Superman's character. Too bad as it showed they had some thinking on the plot but did not know the character it rotates around.

I would have liked it better if he renounced his citizenship because our government no longer represents Truth, Justice and the American way... now that would have been a statement..

But globalism/citizen of the world dribble? :sick

A common mistake people make is saying they are ashamed of America when they are actually ashamed of the activities of the US Government. The Government != the United States.

A better statement would have been for him to say he's disgusted by certain foreign policies and will no longer be taking orders from Washington DC.

This is the New Coke of comic books. Leaves a bad taste in your mouth and drives people to the competition even after "classic" is reintroduced.

WOW... guess I couldn't have read Superman comics when I was small or seen the old Superman movies... guess that only happened in the US back then. Yeah right.

:sick

Superman is AMERICAN, with all the strengths and flaws attached to that.

And become a drunk and beating women and being really dark... oh... just because of Batman... and a jerk... and... he should start killing criminals and threaten the world and become LORD OF THE WORLD.

It could happen... just you wait... one of the suits will take note from a pigeon with crazy ideas and actually think it's the best since sliced bread and run with it.

That would just basically make him the Justice Lord superman from the Justice League cartoon then. Well he wasn't a drunk but he wasn't good to lois and he did kill Luther and melt Doomsday's brain. I can think of a better way to make him a little darker or at least have him question himself without turning traitor. I agree that the writers didn't take the right route on this one. If this was an Elseworlds Superman I could see it and then I wouldn't mind but not the main DC one. It's like giving Batman a machine gun and having him go Punisher on the badguys.

Exactly. The American way isn't that uplifting anymore.

"Superman renounces US citizenship"

....So?

We're upset about this? Unless Superman is allowing the United States to sink into an ocean of raging lava, this doesn't affect my opinion of him at all. If America is in trouble, he'll be there. Same goes for the rest of the world. He shouldn't be exclusive to just us, because than he wouldn't be 'super'.
