Studio Scale TIE Fighter

I can't wait to get this kit.

I've been looking at various reference photos and since I'm new at this, I'm not sure about something.

In many buildups, if not all, people typically use this paint scheme:

jv_tie_5.jpg

Yet an original prop from ANH looks like this:

In particular, the second image of both is what concerns me..

Are both 'correct'? Is the common one from ROTJ or something? Some people also paint their TIEs more blue than grey. I know (think) ESB and ROTJ props were kind of a bluish, but the ANH ones look more grey. What's right?

That's a very controversial & hot topic & I'm sure that it's been discussed here before, but since we're both newbies I'll share what I've learned from reading the boards and various sources.

In the first film (A New Hope 1977) the TIEs don't look bluish at all, but in later films they did, this is why some folks build theirs gray. According to the book 'Famous Spaceships of Fact & Fantasy" published in 1978 the TIE's were painted a light gray blue, almost a powder blue (more gray than blue), but blue values are lost during film duplication and the bluescreen process. According to Lorne Petersen (ILM staff member) in his book "Scultping a Galaxy" the TIE's were painted in a Tamiya color which is no longer available ("Stormy Sea Blue") and barely passed bluescreen tests (you can't use blue on models with the bluescreen process because everything that is blue will become black like space).

Beyond that, it seems that some ships may have been painted a slightly bluer shade in later movies (it's hard to tell sometimes, it's a very tricky color) and yes there were differences between the various models, even amongst the "hero" and "pyro" versions. Some had longer laser cannons than others, some were missing the amber colored tips, different gray areas, darker window frames, slightly different wing panels, etc.

Hope this helps. I'll try to find a thread where this was discussed earlier . . .

I have an older Niesen TIE with the solid wings & I'm very happy with it. I plan to make my own armature for it & maybe hollow it out a little to make it lighter (it's pretty heavy!).

Well actually it's Pactra and not Tamiya, it would have been too easy ! :)

Hey, that's my buildup! Cool someone found it useful.

What you're seeing is a trick of the light, the miniatures look much lighter under the harsh shooting lights. Pics of the models at various museums, depending on what film they were used for, register two colors, the light, cold grey or the blue tint of ESB and ROTJ.

I've attached the files that I posted over on the RI. I can't find the originals I made - if you can't read the tiny text I used on the photos - go to the RI thread here - http://www.resinilluminati.com/showpost.php?p=120852&postcount=7

But to summarize, the basic answer, apparently, is a blue-gray. And fairly dark, too. I was surprised as well. In talking to some people about Edlund's damaged TIE we concluded:

- That it was an original Ep.IV model.
- It hadn't been messed with (ie: wings, body parts swapped out) save for the replacing of the top hatch cover (which was an ILM casting).
- Likely is more "original" than the ones on display with the tours which we've seen, at times, to have ROTJ bodies with ESB wings.

And since the paint on the damaged top hatch that I replaced on Edlund's TIE matches the rest of the paint on the ship, that tells me that the paint on the hatch IS what they used on Ep. IV.

And, having photographed Edlund's TIE before it went out, I can tell you how different it looks on (digital) film and in person. Once you get a lot of light on the model, it really starts to loose color and go to a light gray. And the optical process, as has been pointed out, exacerbates the difference.

Sooooo, like the original TV Enterprise, it boils down to painting it either the way it was sitting on stage, or the way you remember seeing it on screen. I'll argue that it's a matter of personal preference.

Thanks again Gene for taking the time to post this info. Having seen the Edlund hatch cover at your place I would echo your comments re: how much darker the original grey finish appears in person.

It'll be interesting to see how efx handles this one...

Re: Studio Scale TIE Fighter Colors

some news on the delivery of the new tie kits ????

Michel

Talked to Steve this last weekend. He's been having family issues that's slowing things down, but mentioned that kits were going to be shipping out today or Friday.

Re: Studio Scale TIE Fighter Colors

the original looks like a medium blue color until it's under bright lighting, then it looks like a light gray, no doubt about it. DV TIE is the same way.

Re: Studio Scale TIE Fighter Colors

I think wooten's question has been misunderstood. He isn't talking about the shade of the base color. He's talking about, for one thing, the greeblies on either side of the canopy. In the buildup, they're painted the color of the canopy, and in the auction pic, they're the base color.

Re: Studio Scale TIE Fighter Colors

Just spoke with Steve, he just got back in town following what was supposed to be a family trip, turned into a nightmare/family emergency. A family member had emergency surgery out of town. He says that he will post late late tonight and give everyone updates/progress reports. He is already back in swing working on stuff again. :)

It’s official… I’ve been through the worst Month in history. My dad is still in ICU hoping for good news this week. However as Vader-Darth says I’m back and shipping. Two kits went out Monday and 4 are ready to go out on Friday. When I get home tonight I will email/post whose are going where.

I am finally shipping the last of the owed kits and the new TIE and Interceptor kits (as seen at the EFX booth) will be ready for sell… I will be working from the interest thread started by Darkside72 in the junkyard.
