Studio Half Scale TOS Enterprise Scratch build

I always thought the panel lines were just added on a later paint job to show weathering, I never noticed them in any episode. just goes back to the "painting it as it appears on screen vs. real life." argument. I don't really see why anyone would try to tell you to add them where it's your model. If they want the grid lines, they can buy their own kit and add it to their build.

ATTENTION ALL RIVET COUNTERS AND GRID LINE PAINTERS, PLEASE REPORT TO THE AIRLOCK.......3....2.....1.....No, No, Please......:cry. Lol.

Thanks for that I talk about that eraser in the next video which will take most of the night to load.

Got the top of the saucer all done and decals on. Tomorrow I lock it down and putty it shut. Moving on to the Nacelles.

well, to do my part and help beat this topic into the ground, while i don't lose any sleep over the grid line debate, when i watched Star Trek on my Zenith TV back in the early 1970's, i never saw any gridlines on the ship in any episode.

yes, i know they were drawn on with pencil.

yes, i know they are in matt jefferies drawings.

yes, i've read and understand the rationale Round 2 used to defend having them on their model.

but bottom line is, i never saw them as a kid...ever. and i watched every episode at least 6 times each while it was in syndication.

the enterprise was also white to my eye, or just a shade of off-white or light grey.

i think what steve has done with his model very faithfully captures the essence and soul of the enterprise i remember warping across my tv set back in the day.

my two credits worth.

t

That about says it all.

I'm tired of rivet counters always telling others what to put on their models.

Steve appears to have the same line of thinking as DrMcoy and myself: Paint it as you see it.

Has anyone actually ever looked at the filming models in person? they realy are quite horrendous to look at. Their colours are completely different to those seen on screen. I do not want my Enterprise-D to look like some sort of 1970s bathroom fixture with a "screen accurate" duck egg blue finish! It looked grey on screen to me, so that's how I paint it.
Same goes for the original Enterprise. If you wanted to be entirely accurate, and count rivets, then in reality you would only paint half the model and have wires and fixtures hanging out the left side, stickers covering screw holes and an off center saucer section.

So, give Steve a break, he's painting his model how he likes according to how he saw it on screen.

Love the work and the time you take to film and explain it all Steve. :thumbsup

Hi there.
I have been watching this for a while now and have been meaning to retrieve my password just so I could post in here.
You seem like a really great guy, Steve. I find your videos on Youtube to be very entertaining. I love how you start them off. Just after the intro, whipping your hair back over your head and then straight into it. You are like some crazy scientist documenting your latest discovery. Cracks me up everytime I see it. Your passion for this project really shines through in every episode. And who can forget, Rosies little interuptions :)
One thing I admire the most about you is your willingness to share your trade secrets with everyone. I honestly don't think there could be a better way to learn how to do this type of thing...besides being your apprentice. Which I kinda feel like we all are. You explain everything so well.
And just so you know. I am neither a modeler or Star Trek fan. Just someone super impressed with this build and how you have conducted yourself throughout.

Awesome video, Steve! I was so glad to see those decals going down! Hopefully your bussard collectors will be there soon and we can see this lady in all her glory! Thank you so very much for documenting this build so well!

I just watched the latest video and wow! The saucer looks great, and the weathering is just right :thumbsup

...give Steve a break, he's painting his model how he likes according to how he saw it on screen...etc...etc...

What's all this crap about? Has anyone said anything negative about Steve's painting? Or about him not adding grid lines? Nope, not a single post. Nothing but praise and 'at a boys, all well deserved. It's not enough to squash anyone who dares to ask a question, but now we have to attack phantom questions that were never asked? What the hell is wrong with you people?

Questions are not criticism.

There's a question or two I've wanted to ask Steve, because I'm genuinely interested and curious, and eager to maybe learn something. But the negativity here has made me fearful I might end up on the wrong end of a pitchfork, just for asking.

This is Steve's thread, questions are directed to him. How about we let Steve set the tone mkay? Let Steve decide how he wants to respond and the rest stay out of it.

Exactly! Well said robin1.

The spirit of enquiry can be intimidated into silence so easily by negative perceptions and the baggage of past arguments. Personally I feel only respect and awe for what Steve is doing here, the man and his skills are simply amazing. I’ve said it before and I will say it again, thanks’ Steve!

Well said Rob, I was going to post the same sort of thing but I'm sure you said it better than I would have. To add I also will say that I HAVE learned a lot watching Steve's progress. As always looking forward to your updates Steve. :)

I think Steve takes it as a compliment when others point something out or make suggestions. It means we are paying close atttention to the photos and vids he posts out of respect for his spending so much time and effort to show us how he does the incredible things he does.

No, I feel Steve's the kind of guy who doesn't take lightly to criticism but that's because he knows what he's doing is right. His execution, speed, tenacity and focus in seeing his work to completion are the traits of a true Rembrandt.

Steve,

Just watched the video and the saucer is looking amazing. I do have one question for you. Is there a reason that you paint the finish coat and decal it before you putty it up? I've never done it that way but that doesn't mean anything; I'm sure I do a lot of stuff the wrong way, lol.

On another note as painful as it has been waiting for the video I have come to the realization that this project will soon be over. . . :(

Well, I hope my last post wasn't perceived as negative in any way, I just was trying to be silly for a chuckle about the grid lines things. It made me wonder how a starship would get repainted 'in-universe' as part of maintenance and it immediately lept to my mind Kirk would be a fuss-bucket about it...

I just love the videos. Held my breath watching the upper hull name/registration decals go down!

Got to agree with CrackerJazz, and Rob no one is saying that people are asking questions in a nasty or round about way it just get annoying that out of this incredible build some people can only chime in to see if they possibly found a defect in his build. I don't know Steve in the real physical world but by reading his background in the movie industry and seeing his skills at building and fabricating I can say maybe there's a handfull of people in this forum that have the skill and know how that he has. The man has spent a year of his life making this and then you get someone who scales up a pic of the original and with a ruler measures the distance of a window and says Steve's is off, are you kidding me to people like that I say see if you can make something this close, when they bring up stuff like this it just distracts from the build of someone who clearly knows what they are doing. Sorry Steve I'll dismantle my soap box now, Lol.
Ray.

Not sure why you guys feel that you need to stick-up for Steve but it is getting VERY annoying. No one has said ANYTHING negative about this project. We are having interaction and asking questions. That is the nature of this hobby and it's how we become better at our skills. You "defenders" please give it a rest and don't turn this thread into something that to this point we have avoided.

Thank-you

Feek61, if your refering to me I don't have to stick up for Steve he's a grown man as so am I, having a conversation on the model and discussing building techniques is one thing but trying to point out that the guy has made a mistake or should do this or that is another, Like the Nacelles, the dish spike, the grid lines, color, and so on Which is what's really annoying and that's what others feel. And this is the last time I comment on this for not wanting to be accused of hijacking Steve's thread and for respect of his work.
