Re: Stormtrooper pepakura

thanks Lando, SurfingDoc, pRoJectEarth7 & ecl

pRoJectEarth7 i went for 98% scale on the mark VI but i've not had a chance to complete it as this lids been keeping me busy )

as you can se in the photos i've marked all the pits and flaws in the surface, quite a number of them, il be doing some drastic surgery to a few areas tomorrow and hopefully finally have finished with the form, just when i thought i had a nice mould ready finish i've got to sand it again (

(just as a side note, i'm loving the colours in these photos!)

Re: Stormtrooper pepakura

you're are too much of a perfectist, i'd kill for a stormy anywhere near to that. it insipres me to try stormtrooper helmet after my current but at the same time it'll only be a disappointment compared to that.
im just looking at the pictures like :love that is perfect!!
im sure your hard work will pay off though

Re: Stormtrooper pepakura

Yeah, looking at my own current Stormtrooper attempt compared to this makes me very very sad--for myself. Terra1, you have an incredible build there. It's almost cliche' to say it on this forum but I can't believe this started out as paper... The finish work is especially nice.

Re: Stormtrooper pepakura

Hi Terra1, I'm also a new fan of your build. I have a fibreglass lid on the go like yours, I'm about at page2 of your build, I have the ears to do and the traps and tears to form.
Once you cut out the shapes, what did you use to form a strong bridge for the back? I was thinking of using P40? Ie to fill the holes from behind?

Re: Stormtrooper pepakura

yeah i probably am a perfectionist rosskow yet believe 'true perfection has to be imperfect' (to quote an oasis lyric).

the enjoyment had, skills learnt and problems solved while creating something is where its at Stymie924. there's no magic invisible point at where something becomes either good or bad, thats just how we are trained to think and judge things, the thing with art & design/creation, its all good! there is no bad!

if you look at abstract art its not about the realism of the thing, if it still conveys the message it holds true and thats the main purpose in my eyes, if you posted a picture of your build and people say stormtrooper then it is a stormtrooper! get a thread up with your build and join in with the fun mate ) (sorry for the rant, i've just woken up).

Lord DarkFinger thanks friend.

Ourphil P40, i'm thinking thats the stuff for bridging gaps in panels, never used it but if its like the P38 consistency id not use it.

i attempted the indents a few times and couldn't get them right, i ended up cutting out the exact shape of the indent, then used some milliput putty on the inside to back the hole.

i flattened out some milliput between to 4mm riser so it would be an even thickness, waited about 1-2 hours for it to get stiffer and then i pressed it against the back of the hole, it will bend and suit the curve of the form.

now from the front it will have a clean smooth recessed indent, once fully set i backed it up on the inside with some P38, just to be sure when i was pressing it from the outside it wouldn't pop out.

i used some fresh milliput and squeezed it along the 90 degree angle of the indent with my finger, then wet rubbed it smooth with my finger. it might not be the right indent angle first try but just do a few more layers. hope this helps a bit mate.

Re: Stormtrooper pepakura

Thanks for your reply. I have no Milliput experience but will get some to try, is it available from Craft and Model shops, rather than the Car Filler products?
How strong is milliput to adhere and bond with?
I know that P40 is a fibreglass, strong bonding material.

Did you handmake the round ears, or putty over a round template such as a jam jar lid?

I've been buying my milliput online....terracotta £3.00 delivered from amazon. Nipped into hobbycraft and they sell it at £8.99!!!!

NAILED IT!!!

Just kidding. As bad as it looks, I think I can push and pull and get this thing into shape. The dome isn't attached yet. Anyway, thought you'd enjoy the laugh. SPACECOWBOY, don't hate me for what I've done to your model.

yeah milliput can be found in art and hobby shops, theres a few different grades..
standard (standard all purpose) £3
terracotta (suggested pots and brick work) £3
white (for porcelain) £5
black (for model making) £5

i've only used standard and terracotta and they seem pretty much identical, the white and black grades are super fine but needless for using in the way i have.

its a 2 part epoxy putty that comes in 2 sausage like sticks, once kneaded its soft and gradually sets over a 4 hour period.

once it sets its rock solid, like seriously tuff stuff! its classed as an industrial product yet its clean and safe enough for bare hand indoor use, just don't eat it! sands, saws, files nice and smooth. defiantly pick some up as its extremely handy!

as for the ears/wings, fully terracotta milliput with a 3 ply 2mm cardboard circle underneath the milliput.

yeah 3 quid is about right, i've not tried the higher priced, white and black ones yet.
standard milliput buy it now £2.35 on ebay!
black & white buy it now £3.68, not bad, mite have to try some.

it looks alright! once its fully glued together it holds a better form, keep going mate!)

Re: Stormtrooper pepakura

looking lush pal :)

sussed out how to do a one piece mold yet? I'm sure I saw a video on here of someone doing one with a clonetrooper bucket somewhere. Seem to recall he had just sliced the inner silicon mold up the back (although i'm pretty sure you are already fully aware of this!)

Re: Stormtrooper pepakura

very nice, i'll take 3, do you accept paypal :)

im eager to see the molding process

Re: Stormtrooper pepakura

Here is a great step by step blog post about casting a helmet. I believe the author is a member here. He created some great Daft Punk helmets a while back and is a fellow Atlanta resident.. Anyway, this blog has got some of the best "how to" posts on prop building and casting. You might contact him directly through the RPF for some advice.

Again, beautiful build. Should cast up nicely.

Re: Stormtrooper pepakura

thanks again for the nice comments.

thanks Stymie924 yeah i've been on his blog before, great information and builds.

Ourphil i've probably used 6 boxes of it, i used it to drastically flesh out the form as i made a few errors while glueing the pep, for £2 a box i'd get £20 worth.

better to have a few boxes left over, you will always find a need/use for it in the future.
