Stormtrooper pepakura - TERRA RETURNS! WITH PICS!

Re: Stormtrooper pepakura

yeah hooper i don't like the look of the big hole either, makes me think arrrrgh +3 days.

i was using plastic tubing but it was doomed from the start, id never been happy with the method, yeah the plywood method you mentioned is the way forward, altho i planned to use flattened out milliput instead of ply, roughly the same way i did the frown teeth and antenna that il be glueing on the ears 2mro.

the reason i cut the hole is so using that method i dont have to shape the back edge to match the bucket surface, i can make the part independently and just pop it through and blend blend the seam.

i think the trick is to get it pretty much perfect before its stuck into the thing to avoid lots of intricate sanding in tight complex angles, i knew this vocoder would give me some trouble hence why i saved the best to last :eek:P

yeah rosskow 3rd time lucky seems to be how it goes with troublesome areas, its worth getting it right and not settling for the quick option, should be worth it in the end.

when ever i have trouble with a area or any drawing i do for example its usually a warning sign that something isn't right.

i may have to change my name to MR.MILLIPUT!)

Re: Stormtrooper pepakura

lol....know what you mean mate, using reams of the stuff (milliput) myself at the moment....it's just a joy to use though. Although, I think it may mean this is my last pep build. Seriously thinking about it, it makes more sense to make the build out of clay initially, so you can tweak and tweak (kind of where we are at now) at the inital stage.

flattened milliput does sound cool, but seeing as i've loads pf plywood in the garage it would be daft not to use it up :)

Re: Stormtrooper pepakura

yeah we are the millimen! i actually been hoping to get myself a armature bust and start working with chavant NSP clay.

i thinking about getting this...
Joe Human Armature « Composite Effects | Custom Theatrical Props, Special Makeup Effects, Silicone Masks, Foam Latex Appliances, Mold Making & Casting, Animatronics, Model Sculpting

its got a pretty small head circumference yet once you have the clay on probably makes sense.

they quoted me $75 shipping! so i held off ordering.

if your in the market for one id imagine for them to ship 2 would be the same shipping cost, could go halfers.

i was going to try cast one on my head and shoulders but after all the costs for materials and doing it id be cheaper buying one thats perfect already.

PS: check out the masks on that site i linked they are incredible! low shore number silicone looks great!

Re: Stormtrooper pepakura

thanks mate but money is tight at ther moment, so an armerture is a luxury I can't really stretch to at the min...although i have personally got to know a member on here that scratch builds from clay (very good he is too) so i'll have a word with him first about a bust.

btw...these guys do an armeture for $55 before shipping for a great looking bust, not sure about shipping though The Monster Makers ready made Sculpting Head Armature Busts - 866-521-SPFX Toll Free

Re: Stormtrooper pepakura

I ordered a bunch of milliput online last night. Thanks for the tip Mr. Milliput!

Re: Stormtrooper pepakura

no worries hooper the monstermakers one is actually made by the CFX guys, its the ridged foam display mask version, the yellow bust in the link i sent over is actually a resin cast filled with ridged foam.

but yeah either way shipping + import tax is a pain in the a$$! i still might go for it one late night when i'm online bored hahaa.

Hebinator nice one, i hope you find it as useful as all us UK guys, totally couldn't have got where i am in my build without it.

was it easy to pick up in the states?

Re: Stormtrooper pepakura

Yeah, you have to be willing to tear into it at some point. I am actually into day 3 of sanding and filling--the Bondo stage. Honestly, I am thinking that next time I might avoid resins/epoxies altogether and just stick with paper mache and sheet rock mud. The fumes are too much.

Anyway, great GREAT work. I love watching the progress of this thread!

Re: Stormtrooper pepakura

been a while since i've had an upload, been tinkering with endless vocoder methods. finally got one i'm happy with, i just need to insert it now.

hopefully will get it in place and finished off tonight, if so il be cleaning up tomorrow and giving a final coat of primer/wet sand... nearly finished!)

Re: Stormtrooper pepakura

Success! :)

i would say only a couple more details to finish up but well even the simplest of bits can quickly turn into a nightmare so good luck

Re: Stormtrooper pepakura

GETTING THERE
vocoder in place and looking pretty good, still needs lightly sanded to smooth out any seams but all in all i feel its been pretty successful.

thought id upload a few quick photos to update you guys.
(please note there is a bit of perspective distortion due to using this lens up close resulting in the bucket looking slightly narrow.)

Re: Stormtrooper pepakura

This is a pretty good job so far!
If you're still looking for constructive criticism: The traps on the back of the head are too narrow from what I see. They should be wider.
And the edges on the eyes are a little too rounded. They should have sharper "corners" on the outside edges.
Here's what I'm talking about:

There's other things I could nitpick, but this is a pretty good effort, so I won't ;)

Re: Stormtrooper pepakura

i envy your improvisation, i've had a nightmare just to put the ridge which goes around the boba fett helmet on, i dont think i would of managed to make that vocoder from scratch, great work yet again

hahaa thanks R2Dan! yeah i feel i've done alright for my first shot.

i decided a good while back that attempting to get a screen accurate build wasn't really that interesting. i fancied going for something that has definite differences over most other versions.

the areas i've changed have been to personal preference, i've nothing against screen accurate builds i just feel the original helmets suffer from many fundamental design errors. i don't mean manufacturing errors but good old fashioned artistic principles getting smashed to pieces.

there's other things I could nitpick, but i won't ;) keep up the good work mate! :p

thanks rosskow, yeah it was a bit of a struggle, probably the hardest part i've had so far. i actually just lowered the the brow ridge yet again, looks more how i like it now.
