Steve McQueen... gone, but not forgotten.

Today, marks the thirtieth anniversary of the passing of the one, the only, Steve McQueen -- the King of Cool. One of the most charismatic men to ever grace the screen, a talented racer, and my ****ing hero... here's to ya, Steve.

That one was a shocker all those years ago. I was in college back then and everyone about fell over when we heard the news.

I now work in a book review place and we've recently gotten two books on him (must be for the 30th anniversary); one about his cars McQueen's Machines, and a straight biography.

Always loved him. Bullet, The Great Escape, Pappilon, forgetaboutit.

Thats amazing , I really didnt realise it was so long ... as you say , gone but very definitely not forgotten. A true hero.

Here, here.

I was actually watching The Great Escape (one of my all time fave flicks)with my Dad in our rec room when my Mom told me he had passed on...we were/are both big fans.

I'm reading "McQueen's Machines" now....great book.

Thirty years already?

The next time you watch the Magnificent Seven, pay attention to Steve. He doesn't have a lot of lines at all, but he's stealing every scene he's in, playing with his hat and so on.
Brynner didn't know how to handle a gun, so Steve taught him one and only one little move on holstering his gun, saving better looking moves for himself.

Just watched Pappillion last week.

He was truely one of the greats!

Very much not forgotten! All his films were excellent. I watch Bullett all the time, and Tom Horn is a favorite. It doesn't get much better than The Getaway too, and The Hunter is an underrated favorite of mine as well. The Sand Pebbles. Junior Bonner.

One of my favorite performances by him happens to be Hilts in "The Great Escape." I also liked him in "Bullitt", "Nevada Smith" and "The Towering Inferno."

It's a real shame that he died at 50. As crazy as it sounds, I would have liked to see him play John Rambo in "First Blood", see how he would have approached the role (and yes, he was considered for the role of John Rambo back with the film was in development during the 1970s).

My McQueen shelf in my prop room. Autographed photo. He, too, was one of my contemporary heros. Even loved his appearance in "On Any Sunday."

I would have loved him in THE BODYGUARD, another one he was developing.

Steve helped make moto what it is today, which is why I am obsessed with the guy (and another reason I wore my Triumph "Spirit of '68" McQueen tee for the day).

I love him as well. Sand pebbles and Bullitt being my favs. I admire the fact he would lessen his amount of lines (going against what other actors would do) and only use a glance or gesture to convey the same meaning. I saw a Ford commercial a few years back (only once) where they digitally inserted shots of McQueen from Bullitt into the new Mustang ad. very cool. love to get a copy of that.

:thumbsup I wore that same shirt today before even looking at this thread. Didn't realize it was the anniversary of his death.

Thirty years?! :wacko

"The Towering Inferno" is one of my favourites too! :thumbsup

Such a charismatic actor! Definitely not forgotten!

Drove in the Le Mans race while whey were filming the movie even though he was expressly forbidden to do it by the studio.

Some of his best work was also some of his earliest work. Wanted: Dead or Alive is out on DVD now and worth every penny.

The only poster in our living room/Den when I was a kid was a poster of Steve McQueen on his motorcycle hanging over the end of the bar.
He and John Wayne were probably the only actors my Father ever regarded as heroic in any way. We had motorcycles and a black Mustang too, now that I think of it!

RIP!

I'm a car nut and have Le Mans and Bullitt on DVD and when it comes to acting around automobiles, there's none better than Steve McQueen...

A toast!

:cheers

There's a Mustang of the same vintage a few houses down from where I live....the guy is constantly tinkering with it. It smells awful when it drives by but man it sounds great...:)

Great collection there eltee....
