Steampunk Ironman Helmet WIP - 5/31 update

Re: Steampunk Ironman Helmet WIP - HELP: opinions on Mics??

I also like the spring mic better, but I had a thought: what if you made the "amplifier" more like a passive horn amplifier? I think it'd be much more in line with the 1800's, but I have no idea how you'd integrate it into the mouthpiece. Something that looks like this though:

Just a thought.

Re: Steampunk Ironman Helmet WIP - HELP: opinions on Mics??

That is sharp and while I'm inclined to agree with that, Iron Man is really cutting edge tech no matter the era. So being seriously ahead of the times is allowed. In my opinion. That said the trumpet would be cool, especially If you put openings in the cheeks or lower face plate !

It looks awesome. I like the spring mike look better then the other one you created. You have great talent.

Re: Steampunk Ironman Helmet WIP - HELP: opinions on Mics??

I like the horn idea, drknotter. Hard to get that into this space, but electraflier is right, Tony Stark would be ahead of the tech curve by decades. And since patents for the carbon microphone were filed in 1877, that means a Victorian Age Stark could easily have had this system employed within this armor system.

I've definitely decided to go with the Ring Mounted Carbon Microphone. I've got some great reference pictures (I'll post them in a bit), and I'll get to constructing it after I get the helmet all ready for molding.

To that end, I've been touching up minor things that still bother me and have finally hit the main helmet section with it's final (hopefully) filler primer coats.

I'm taking lots of pictures for the Raw Cast thread in the Junk Yard... I'll also post them here so everyone can get a good look at where we are prior to doing the cheek detailing and painting.

Re: Steampunk Ironman Helmet WIP - HELP: opinions on Mics??

Finished up the last (hopefully) primer coats today and decided to get the helmet out in some direct 100% flaw-exposing sunlight for ya! Here are a crap-ton of pictures from all the angles I could come up. If I'm missing something you'd like to see, please let me know and I'll add it.

Let the fun begin! :)

Re: Steampunk Ironman Helmet WIP - 38 NEW PICS!

So glad to be on board for this outstanding project! Wow is about all I can add! It would be better if I sounded like Christopher Walken! Like wow!
Is someone going to pep the suit? I will definitely build the whole suit!

Re: Steampunk Ironman Helmet WIP - 38 NEW PICS!

Looking great man! Nice photo dump! What's left on this guy?

I'm sending PM's to all the folks on the Raw Cast list tomorrow explaining that I'm going to be installing the Carbon Spring mic in my build (which will mean the communicator cross-bar will be cut out of mine). I really liked the idea of casting it RIGHT NOW and letting folks mod their raw cast version any way they want.

...But I feel obligated to at least touch base with everyone else on the list just to insure that no one has a major issue with getting it as is stands right now (without the communicator).

Here is what I plan for mine (this is obviously photoshopped for reference only)...

I'm working on the microphone piece now. I guess I could mold and cast those along with the pipe pieces IF anyone really wants copies of them. Regardless, I'll definitely make sure to post links to the exact springs and hardware I'm using and other details so anyone that ends up with a Raw Cast can simply 'follow along' with my build (if they don't have other plans!).

Take Care!

Indie, i'm just lovin' it an high quality too can't wait ta see it after a fresh pull brah. :cool :eek:cool

I have a modeler standing by to do pieces that we might need. However, Digitizit is the money guy behind the project and pep files cost money. I was always planning to have someone model a few of the big important pieces for me (the chest/torso for example). I'll have a chat with Digitizit (currently attending the Olympics) and see what his feelings are about sharing the files he ends up purchasing and get back to you! :):thumbsup

Re: Steampunk Ironman Helmet WIP - 38 NEW PICS!

Awesome job, man. A lot of great detail has gone into this. I, like many others, would like to see the whole suit done.

Being a perfectionist I have a couple questions for you. First off since you will be wearing this helmet wouldn't it be worth the extra effort to actually put working microphone in that spot? You know so people can hear you when the face plate is down.

The other question is. since this is Steampunk what is the armor supposed to be made out of? I've seen leather and metal versions. If you are going with metal then I would suggest doing some fine tune work on the side of the helmet. It's looks like molded clay in a few areas. Throwing is some small weld seems can do wonders on things like that. The work you have done is amazing though!

Just being a perfectionist I notice things like this. Its a blessing and a curse for my own projects.

It's been discussed by Digitizit and I (as well as several others that are going to be working on their own copies of the raw casts).

If not for loud-speaker function, I've actually been toying with this space being used for a mic for a cell phone headset. This costume will likely need a good handler with it (at Cons at least). So, if both the handler and costume wearer had an open cell phone line that's hands-free, communication would be a LOT easier between the two. :):thumbsup

We're actually aiming to replicate a piece of existing artwork, so we'll try to match that as closely as possible. The artwork seems to indicate most of the helmet is metal. But, you're VERY correct in noticing the empty 'cheek' areas look... well, unfinished! :love

Those will have a LOT of 'fine detail' added before they're done... almost so much that there won't be any of the solid section you see there now. So, what you're seeing is mostly 'place-holder.' :cool

I really CAN'T wait to get into that part of the build... but before I can do that the helmet needs to be molded so casts can be made. I guess I'll just practice being patient. :facepalm

Re: Steampunk Ironman Helmet WIP - 38 NEW PICS!

Worked a bit tonight on the Carbon Spring Microphone. Here are some reference pics I liked...
7681645858_50c2455172.jpg

My first step to create something like this was determining how big the microphone's center section would need to be to fit the space I have to work with while still allowing the springs to look right.

I started by marking out the areas I am planning on cutting out of the current communication cross-bar.
7681610982_24cde7346e.jpg

After doing some measurements, I ran to the convenience store and looked for a nicely shaped bottle-top that fit the size I needed. Lucky for me, A&W Cream Soda has a plastic bottle cap that's the PERFECT size. So, I got to enjoy a nice Cream Soda while working! :):thumbsup
7681612592_8f61c3871b.jpg

Here's what it looks like (size-wise)...
7681609694_2635489f5f.jpg

**This is for size reference only... the cap will actually sit with it's 'top' in the back when I finish the 'front' of the microphone.

More measuring, more cutting...

Next up is shopping for some screws (or at least screw heads), a small section of metal mesh and (of course) springs. I'll swing into Ace tomorrow at lunch and see what I can find!

Nite all! :):thumbsup

Re: Steampunk Ironman Helmet WIP - 38 NEW PICS!

They have screws that have nice size heads but only 3-4 threads, Home depot, my toy store had them last time I looked by the machine screws. I think they were for sheet metal or aluminum work.
I really like that mic...painted and antiqued to look like brass! Sweet! :love
It would easily hold a mic for a voice changer or as you said a link to a handler!
How soon till cast do you think for the helmet and the face/cheek parts! Getting stoked!

I love your work, it's so amazing and professional. Look forward to seeing how this turns out.
