Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker (Pre-release)

That's a reasonable stance and I can say I may be completely wrong about this movie. It could be amazing and I might have to eat crow. I doubt it, but it is possible.

Could defenders say the same? Could they admit that it might end up being a total disaster?

It makes me wonder.

I'm curious what the "defenders" would actually consider a failure. A lot of the defense is built up on the "for 12 year olds", "it's fantasy", etc.

Where do defenders draw the line between acceptable and absurd?
What’s the general consensus in psychology for how long this stuff usually lasts?

I get crap food at a restaurant, I DO NOT go back. Period. Not unless i hear there was a complete overhaul of staff/etc, and even then it'd take someone to talk me into it.
To be fair there kinda was a change in management. Not a huge fan of JJ but at least he got what SW is about with TFA unlike the other bloke who just wanted subversion. Not filled with hope, especially that the guy who wrote Justice League and BvS is cowriting...

yeah, but i'm not stuck with the bad food after a change of ownership/management/whatever. It's a clean....uh....plate :)

JJ is, like it or not, stuck with TLJ. Sure, he could undo parts or even all of it, but it's at the expense of the time he has to work with. No matter what he does, it still damages the end product.

And?

The guy was had limbs cut off, burned, electrocuted, "died", his body cremated, and yet. Here he is!

The only reason he is there is because he KILLED Palpatine. Having limbs cut off and being burned didnt kill him either by the way. Its an age old trope called redemption and reward. 0 for 2.
Let me guess...George Lucas had a conversation with Kasdan 20 years ago about making Sith Ghosts a thing or in Marvel comic #47 Sheev Sith Ghost came back and got fitted with spider legs or some guy from Boise Idaho wrote fan fiction that made it into canon because Lucas must have signed off on it.
If the leaks about how this plays out and most of the leaks seem to be on target so far, Its a laughable disgrace. Take another chug of that sweet blue Kool Aid.

Darth Maul arguably shouldn’t have died in episode 1 since there was potential for growth. But bringing him back was stupid, hence why Maul doesn’t appear in the prequels again and only appears in Solo (to audience confusion if they recognized the character).

Yeah I don’t have high hopes. I think JJ’s understanding of what makes Star Wars good is also off (he thinks it’s all about mystery boxes), and he isn’t a good closer (Lost, Fringe, etc). But he is also set up to fail with TLJ so I do feel for him.

Honestly I felt TFA was a fantastic start to the trilogy. And truth is we will never see the og cast together mainly because Ford wanted Solo killed off or he wasn't coming back. I feel that's a huge part of it. It's not all Disneys fault. But I think JJ set up the trilogy well and introduced new characters that could have been developed and expanded in the next two films. Then Rian Johnson came in like a tornado and destroyed the entire star wars legacy. Does he know what he did? And does he think what he did(or lack there of) actually contributed and advanced the story?

Let's see. JJ set up a new order gaining control of the Galaxy with a brand new leader, a stormtrooper who defected and became a hero and a new potential Jedi who could become what the force needs to balance it.

Ruin took that new leader and turned him into a throw away character and because of that JJ had to resort to resurrecting Palpatine. Took the new potential hero and made her a whiney begging little turd. And had the new resistance hero go away with some chick. Then introduced 2 worthless characters and killed them off. While doing nothing to actually advance the plot of the trilogy or following up on what JJ set up. The movie is just the FO vs the Resistance, with no real story advancement.

I think TROS, no matter how bad it may seem, will never reach Ruin Johnson low. JJ, imo, proved that with TFA. But because Ruin went no where with the trilogy that puts JJ in a corner. It won't be as good as it could be because of that and we need to accept it and move on. We could enjoy the movie better.

I will go see it with that in mind and I get to cosplay with friends. I'm attending as Palpatine. That would be fun even if the film bombed. I give Star Wars films and shows a chance before I say anything bad.

kinda related. The Disney trilogy had a Kabuki play which was a retelling of TFA and TLJ.

Apparently it can be seen online. Haven’t seen it though so can’t comment. One notable thing though is it seems Kylo Ren is the protagonist, not Rey, and Finn doesn’t even appear.

It's just too late now. Everything I keep seeing with every TV spot and trailer just lines up perfectly with all the leaked plot points I've read and it's just not for me. I did cave and watch a supercut YouTube video of The Child on the Mandalorian and I understand why the world is freaking out. He is easily one of the most adorable characters I have ever seen in a TV show or movie and I may even give the show a chance, JUST to see more of him.

For me, the Sequel Trilogy can't end soon enough.

It's almost over. We are less than a month away from a new decade filled with new atrocious Disney Wars films, trilogies and what have you.

"It's a story for 12 year olds."

Is another lame argument used to dissuade any reasonable thought and is often used to justify bad writing.

It also mocks the intelligence of 12 year olds. They may be kids but not all of them are morons.

Just be honest. If you like it and you can't articulate why, but you just enjoy it, then say so. At least I can get behind that and say I'm happy you are getting something out of this.
Creating elaborate defenses that make no logical sense and then shoving off people who dislike it by saying, "you're just a hater" is the way children settle disputes.

I'd like to think we as a Fandom are more evolved than that.

I can articulate why I enjoyed the first two ST films, but never feel like doing so, because there's always someone who'll pop up to "educate" me on why I am wrong to think it (not here on the RPF I hasten to add).

Having said that, a large part of why I like them, I simply don't know why, and I'm happy to say I like them, just because I do :).

In terms of TROS, I'm not massively looking forward to it, but i'm holding onto some positive outlooks, like getting to watch Ian knock it out of the park again as Palpatine.

Ian truly is one of the greats and he was born to play that part without a doubt. He was one of the best parts of the PT by a mile. Not that I'm a fan of that trilogy, but of the few elements I did enjoy he was without a doubt one of them. You could tell he relished being so deliciously evil and that is always infinitely entertaining when you've got an actor as talented as him.

The thing with Star Wars is you don’t need to be a elitist intellectual to enjoy them. Laser swords, blasters, and flying spaceships are cool and fun to watch.

What makes Star Wars amazing though is if you choose to take the leap and delve into the movie from a variety of aspects, you just love the product more. The story and it’s themes were the big thing that drew me in. I just thought lightsabers were cool but learning about graflexes, the reason why they were used, etc from the RPF made me love Star Wars more. The same goes for LotR (not a huge fan but I loved learning about the stories).

Without a doubt it speaks to the kid in all of us, regardless of age and that's one of the many reasons why it holds a special place in my heart.

I often get hyperbolic about analysing it to death because now as an adult, and as a writer myself, I see the potential the new additions could have given us if they'd only been handled better. Often the changes I would have made would have been quite simple and kept most of the original idea.

I am truly happy for the fans who enjoy these new episodes, I wish I was one of you. At the end of the day, we are all one big family ( as fans) and perhaps I need to keep that in mind more often, no matter how passionately I feel otherwise.

For me, those who dislike the ST and can have really good conversations about why etc, are really just coming from their position the same as I do. Which is we all love Star Wars, so it saddens me that they can't or don't like it as much as I do right now, but I get it. Luckily the OT is still there for all of us to enjoy together.
