Why do you some of you keep referring to Rey flipping over tie fighter as Matrix slo-mo? The point of matrix style is to freeze/slow down motion while the camera keeps moving.
Closer would be Schneider, but he slows and speeds up impacts.
This is just slow mo... like any other movie wanting you to see an action by slowing it.
If she hopped over the tie in real time it wouldn’t look dramatic. It would look like the overdone flipping in the prequels.
So I’m good with it.

I'll grant ya that referring to it as Marix slo-mo is probably a just a little bit over dramatic; at least when comparing it specifically to the bullet-time slow mo, not necessarily the the rest of the building jumping and crap. But my overall point is I feel that this type of action slow-motion shot really just doesn't fit in these style of films. The thing I love about the OT and many other films from that era, be it JAWS, Jurassic Park, Indiana Jones, etc is they're films that watch like you're actually experiencing them. Much like when you're reading a good book. You get enveloped by them and can often forget that you are in fact watching a movie. I honestly feel that this is the very reason that these films have lasted with us for so long while so many others fade into history. And as has already been discussed, what minuscule use of it that is in the OT is infinitely more naturally placed within the scene and is used for a very different purpose than "OOOOOH AHHHHHHH". These kinds of slow-mo action shots like the saber swing in TLJ and this flip over the fighter, while maybe visually stunning, look very unnatural and out of place to me and more often than not pull me right out of the film; making me remember I'm watching a movie. Couple that with nearly every film with action in it these days using a slow-mo shot somewhere in it and yes, it becomes a very overplayed fiddle, much like the overuse of CGI in general. Its funny how Indiana Jones managed to convey many great action shots over three films and not a one of them is in slow motion in order for it to be visually stunning.

I don't mind some slow-mo in Star Wars. But then again I've played through Jedi Outcast and Jedi Academy so many times I've lost count. So slow-mo and lightsabers go hand and hand for me.

I don't mind the slo mo either, especially compared to the bigger problems that shot suggests.

What is that tie pilot even trying to do? Assuming she wasn't Captain Sue, what was the pilot there even hoping would happen? Are you actually trying to run someone over with a tie fighter?

JJ has a tendency to occasionally allow something dumb if its "cool", and this shot suggests that this movie is going to have a healthy helping of that.

Plus why not just blast the hell out of her rather than trying to run her over? I mean whoever is flying that ship has all the advantage in terms of firepower, speed and altitude.

Is running Rey over really a smart choice if Kylo or whoever is trying to kill her?
