I think it would sell the idea that it's up to Rey if Luke stayed dead. Like Ben Kenobi to Luke in Jedi. He's there to impart wisdom or exposition to the protagonist.
Having characters come back constantly undercuts the dramatic tension of their death if they do it all the time. Just like anything that's overdone it loses its appeal. Used sparingly it has great punch.
I tend to wonder, hearing the EP's voice, if they're harkening back to the original idea george had when it was 12 parts. That being Luke wasn't going to be strong enough to take down EP and obi wan was going to cross back over to help with the fight. I don't recall hearing what happened AFTER the fight, but presumably he went back..don't know. That all pre-supposes that the EP laugh was legit and not a total load of BS.
I do tend to think after the blowback from 8 they're going to throw the original fans a bone here. Han is dead dead, Carrie Fisher is gone, so the only 'bone' left is Luke. Maybe he doesn't come back to the living, but i think he's going to do something they expect the old school fans to really like.
Then again, they've blown it in that regard from the get-go. Never put the three in a single scene, barely had 2 in a single scene (not counting chewy), etc.
