Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker (Pre-release)

And what would the Resistance deploy should the men in black hats decide to use the same tactic? They seem to have a history of taking out Death Stars and StarKillers with their ships so its an issue that may have been raised once or twice at the weekly catered meeting seeing they have an entire fleet of Star Destroyers all of a sudden.

The 'men in black hats' wouldnt use that tactic in the first place as they always seem to have numerical superiority. A suicide attack is a desperation move. You never saw the U.S. utilize kamikaze attacks near the end of WW2, because in the grand scheme they are fairly ineffective. The Japanese caused some damage with them but Kamikazes were never going to win the war. Which is why I have to roll my eyes every time someone yells out "Rian Johnson ruined space battles!" No. No he didnt.

Well he certainly negated their necessity because they could have used drones instead, but again this was the least of this movies issues. Clearly this move was effective enough to wipe out a vast majority of the fleet so arguing it's ineffective is kind of moot, no?

Plus we have an undying Emperor to defeat now so there's that to look forward to. Plus the further sullying of the Skywalker name. Yay! I really can't wait for this to be over.

I think Jedi is really hurt by DS2 Electric Boogaloo. If they had changed it even enough that it was the Emperors flagship Star Destroyer I feel like it would be stronger. Obviously the DS2 is basically a mcguffin just to give everyone something to do but it really cheapens the whole conflict for me.

Gotta give props for the Always Sunny reference. Lol

I can forgive the DS2 repetition if only because the climax of the film was so emotionally satisfying because it was centered on Luke, Vader and the Emperor and the space battle was secondary to it.

Rogue One isn't a bad movie but I don't feel it added anything that I didn't already know from reading the opening crawl of ANH.

As far as 9 goes if I can accept the idea of Palpatine surviving, which is ridiculous, but even accepting that idea, why would he wait 30 plus years to put his Contingency plan into action? Why not act immediately while the factions of the Empire still held control of some parts of the galaxy?

Which is part of the problem with the SE ending of ROTJ. Not every system would be victorious over the Empire at the exact same time.

Wouldn't it make more sense that he had no back up plan and had to crawl away to lick his wounds, rebuild the fleet, and plot his eventual return, which would go against the idea of a Contingency?

These are just some of the problems that his return to the story presents. Plus how they will justify his survival?

It could be his spirit, which would make more sense, but still present other issues, but at least would have more validity than him being corporeal.

I just find it strange that people are eager for his return at the expense of undermining the first six films and Anakin's sacrifice. I'm not a PT fan but doesn't it even undercut Anakin finally getting the upper hand over the man who helped screw him over?

Yeah the Throne Room is what mattered most, regardless of where it was actually located. I think my gripe with the second Death Star comes from a long view of the series as it stands today, there are 10 movies and I think at least 7 of them have a direct reference or appearance of the Death Star. Even AOTC has the little hologram projection. It feels like the old EU where it was super weapon of the week.

Yeah I can see that. The Death Star is definitely overused as was the superweapon of the week in the EU. I counted and there are at least 7 uses or major references to it in the 11 films, counting this new one coming out.

I’m fine with DS2 in ROTJ because it makes sense within reality. Military’s tend to almost never build one of a class of ship (in this case it would be Death Star Class). Both ships (or more) are often started at about roughly the same time by different ship yards, but the first in the line is usually completed first and used as a learning curve during the building process which then get reflected onto the second.
In our universe the comparison to DS1 vs DS2 would be the German battleships Bismarck and Tirpitz, Tirpitz being slightly larger than her elder sister and having design changes made along the way correcting those issues found when building Bismarck
My biggest issues with ROTJ are probably how things are executed and those goddamn Ewoks. If Lucas had instead stuck with Wokkies, maybe Wookies being enslaved to help complete the DS2, it would have been more solid with me as we have a in film precedent for Wookies being dangerous af. Thats the first film I think we really start to see Lucas telling people off and sticking with his bad ideas. I dont even think Gary Kurtz worked on it, no?

For me Rogue One is high on the list of favorite SW despite heavy stumbling in the first act while trying to introduce everyone. They really needed to anchor us with caring about Jyn before moving forward and I don’t think they fully accomplished that.

I always get disappointed when I hear LF talk about their initial drafts where Jyn and Cassian were already seasoned soldiers and part of a team, it just streamlines they concept better and opens up nice plots like a conflict of interest over Galens fate. That one specifically is kind of in the film as released but it’s basically just “you’re kind of a stranger and tried to kill my dad”.

I can see the military logic behind DS2, or if they were trying to make an array of DSs to totally crush the galaxy, it’s just a little boring that they basically pull of the same mission twice, even if it’s a trap that Palpatine rigged up. I personally have no issues with Ewoks BUT I agree that Wookiees would have been cooler for sure, and add some depth with the slave labor plot (one of my favorite things in Solo)

Great, so it seems the people behind the story don’t know how to develop a character.

According to this comic, Rey doesn’t need any training to become more powerful than Anakin or Luke. I think it’s clear that this is just terrible writing. To say this isn’t a Mary Sue is now impossible to deny.
How awful is it that that’s an achievement...

I always found it incredibly strange how when people point out how well Rey lines up with a Mary Sue trope they are often labeled as sexist horrible toxic fans by the “True Fans”, but them being ok with Rey just automatically getting all these powers without her needing to go through character defining failures and struggles somehow isn't. By automatically making her this strong its almost like they are simultaneously saying she wouldn’t be able to survive on her own without them otherwise
Idk maybe its just me but it would have been nice to see her struggle, grow and overcome just like Luke and countless other protagonists from a different time in film did
Joek3rr would you like me to hold your beer? :)

Ginger ale for me please ;)

Oh boy, where to start. Let me try this.

"What do you know about the Force?"
"It's a power that Jedi have that lets them control people and make things float."
"Impressive. Every word in that sentence was wrong. Lesson one, sit here, legs crossed. The Force is not a power you have. It's not about lifting rocks.* It's the energy between all things, a tension, a balance, that binds the universe together."
"OK. But what is it?"
"Close your eyes. Breathe. Now, reach out."
"I feel something."
"You feel it?"
"Yes, I feel it."
"It's the Force."
"Wow, it must be really strong with you."
"I've never felt anythi----OW! You meant reach out like.... I'll try again."
"Breathe. Just breathe. Reach out with your feelings. What do you see?"
"The island. Life. Death and decay, that feeds new life. Warmth. Cold. Peace. Violence."
"And between it all?"
"Balance. And energy. A Force."
"And inside you?"
"Inside me the same Force."

*let's add spinning your staff with the Force and mind tricking people to that list.

The Force is really a way of seeing; it’s a way of being with life... ...The Force is a perception of the reality that exists around us. You have to come to learn it. It’s not something you just get. It takes many, many years…Anyone who studied and worked hard could learn it. But you would have to do it on your own.” - George Lucas

"I am no Jedi, but I know the Force. It moves through and surrounds every living thing. Close your eyes. Feel it. The light. It's always been there.(that's 19 years) It will guide you.

"Something inside me has always been there."(again that's 19 years)

"Page-turners they were not. Yes, yes, yes. Wisdom they held, but that library contained nothing that the girl Rey does not already possess."

"Women don’t need to make the journey. In the whole mythological journey, the woman is there. All she has to do is realize that she’s the place that people are trying to get to.

Also a couple of things from that article.
He says "[She's] going on scavenging missions unsupervised." Um yeah, what do think she's been doing for a large chunk of her life?
"basically showing up the basic skills we saw from Ani or Luke -- i.e. some flips here and there and basic swordsmanship." Uh huh, Luke went from farm boy to 4 years latter besting the one best swordsman in the galaxy. Which one before that he couldn't do. So really in a in the time span of year, he went from getting royally defeated, to being better then Darth Vader.

Okay that was way longer then I originally intended. :)

I recently found out there was a Death Star III in Legends......

I only saw R1 once, it was an enjoyable movie. The best scene is also the one that bugs me the most, Vader's killing spree. Really cool visually but so out of place and character, obvious fan service.
