Star Wars: The Last Jedi (Pre-release)

Re: Star Wars: Episode VIII (Pre-release)

YAY!! Now the hard work begins!
Not complaining or anything, but isn't 18 months until release pretty damn early to start editing? Iirc TFA didn't have that luxury. The movie better end up perfect, with all the time they still have to work with the filmed material.

Re: Star Wars: Episode VIII (Pre-release)

Editing doesn't have final FX plates/scenes at this stage. Not even close. They're roughing the whole thing together with loads of blue/greeen screens and animatics.

Re: Star Wars: Episode VIII (Pre-release)

The editing will tell them how the flow is going, and what they might need to re-shoot or add. Some effects plates may not be so good, etc. It's nice to have the luxury of getting a fairly tight rough cut before you're under the gun. Of course that can lead to unnecessary second-thinking and re-writes and additional re-shoots for no reason at all, except "why not, we've got time". The visual effects guys always want to tweak right up until the final second anyway!

Re: Star Wars: Episode VIII (Pre-release)

Because we never actually see von Sydow's character being killed, I think he will reemerge later. He is just "taken away" at Kylo's order.

Freeze frame and watch his "death" in slow motion. Kylo only cuts off his hand that he holds up to protect himself. Then he falls. Only a hand is severed. Seeing as this is all done in animation, it's for very deliberate reasons. They didn't accidentally ONLY sever his hand. I think we'll see him back at some point. Would be a hell of a waste of Max Von otherwise.

Re: Star Wars: Episode VIII (Pre-release)

The truth is the production of EP8 is just 3 months ahead of what the production of TFA was at this point in August 2014. TFA started filming in May 2014, EP8 started filming in Feb 2016..

Hmmm, that's interesting. So none of the supplementary canon material says he was killed?

There is no post or congruent TFA canon material yet as far as I know. And it seems in the film we are to understand he is dead without it being too graphic. His execution occurs and there is still a lot of stuff that happens around his "corpse", you would think someone would hear him say "I'm not dead yet." ;)

I think your spot on here. He's good and dead.
IMO he served his purpose for the movie anyway. I felt his job was to watch over the new chosen one (Rey), but she left jakku anyway.

Re: Star Wars: Episode VIII (Pre-release)

I still haven't read the novelization but I would've assumed it at the very least would've made it clear he was dead.

#1911

“Kylo Ren seemed to grow before him. Rage flared behind the mask as reason gave way to fury. A lightsaber appeared in one hand, flaring to life, a barely stable crimson shaft notable for two smaller projections at the hilt: a killer’s weapon, an executioner’s fetish of choice. “So true.”
Light, refulgent and cutting, ripped across and through the figure of Lor San Tekka.”

Re: Star Wars: Episode VIII (Pre-release)

You know, I just realized that I know very little about the plot of this. Like, nothing.

I remember that moment before TFA came out and I was sitting in a restaurant and they just released the poster. It was the first time I saw starkiller base. At that moment the pennies dropped and I essentially knew the plot.

I have no idea what's going to happen here. I hope there will be some sound stage planets so that there will be some surprises in the theatre

Re: Star Wars: Episode VIII (Pre-release)

You can see Tekka's body on the ground still as Kylo lets Poe's blast (he froze in mid air) finally go at the end of the scene.

Re: Star Wars: Episode VIII (Pre-release)

Yes, but I think the point folks are making is that since you don't see his head laying several feet away from the rest of his body (and even the novelization doesn't say what portion{s} of his body are cut through), and since even Maul came back from being bisected at the waist... Lor San Tekka may just be laying there unconscious or in shock or playing dead or whatever.

Or Max got a good 2-day paycheck for a star of this calibre, and is a happy dead guy.

Re: Star Wars: Episode VIII (Pre-release)

If Star Wars has taught me anything it's that anything can be retconned if you try hard enough. Death doesn't even mean anything in Star Wars. No one HAS to die... or at least, not permanently. Especially, if the character becomes popular enough.

Re: Star Wars: Episode VIII (Pre-release)

Clone Wars isn't EU -- it's canon. Sadly, in that case...
(Some) EU is canon.

The Star Wars expanded universe encompasses all authorized media and officially licensed Star Wars fictional material. The expanded universe includes books, comic books, video games, toys, television films and other assorted media.
