Re: Star Wars: Episode VIII (Pre-release)

That's the fellow , I couldn't remember how to spell it do just left it out

It was a shame he didn't have a bigger part as has such gravitas as an actor

Re: Star Wars: Episode VIII (Pre-release)

The speculation above was about VIII being moved back to its original May release. There was some minor speculation (and hope) that TFA would've been announced to come out last May since production seemed to have wrapped up early, too - but, alas they stuck to December. While, I want nothing less that to see VIII as soon as possible - I think the amazing financial success of the December release of TFA is still fresh in Disney's minds, which will leave us waiting for next December.

That said, the top grossing movie of 2016 was a May release (Capt. America Civil War).... but, we've still got a ways to go. The biggest movie going weekend (so far) was May 6 - the release of Cap - followed by March 25 and June 17.

2015 showed us that 3 of the top 10 films were released in May-June (as opposed to only 2 in 2016). With the biggest weekend was (duh) December 18th, followed by June 12 and May 1.

The article failed to mention the release of Guardians of the Galaxy on May 5. It is another Disney release and would appear to be still within its window of taking in cash during a May Star Wars release.... SW would definitely steal some of GotG's box office seeing that both are sci-fi action movies.

You would also have competition from Wonder Woman a week after a May SW release. While the subpar performance of Batman v Superman (#7 for the year, 2nd biggest weekend) might indicate that this isn't an issue - Suicide Squad might help (as it's currently at #8 for the year and had the 4th biggest weekend). (By comparison, SW had 2 of the biggest weekend in 2015 and one in 2016).

May June 2017 Releases
5 - GotG
12 - Barbie
- Mother/Daughter
19 - Diary of a Wimpy Kid
- Baywatch
- Annabelle 2
- The Nut Job 2
26 - Pirates
- an unnamed R-rated comedy
02 - Wonder Woman
- Capt. Underpants
09 - The Mummy
- World War Z 2

Re: Star Wars: Episode VIII (Pre-release)

Yeah, GOTG would certainly be the biggest issue. And it's a crowded month.

But then again they were planning on releasing GOTG and Pirates in the same month, although I'm not sure that's really comoarable to a SW Saga film release.

Re: Star Wars: Episode VIII (Pre-release)

There is a reason the earlier and later releases are such a success. Its because audiences have had nothing to watch for months. Marvel have recognised that for a while now,
This summer schedule has been particularly crowd with big budget "flops." They are just not achieving the volumes needed. Some would have done much better if they had been moved to the later part of the year.
For example, there is nothing I really want to see until "Dr Strange" in November. So from "Suicide Squad" which was 5th August until 4th November I will not be visiting the cinema because there is no product I want to see.Thats three empty months.
If a movie comes out and its reasonably good I'll go and see it simply because I haven't been to the cinema for a while and I'll go regardless. And these "surprise" BO hits outside of the usual summer schedules happen similarly because people are simply going to see a gendre movie that literally hasn't any competition for a while.
I used to like go to the cinema damn regularly but now, if I know there is a film that I would like to see during the crowded summer (rather than being desperately keen ) and its getting just so so reviews I will happily wait until the DVD comes out in three months for the autumn/ winter or its available to buy on line. Theres not that much difference in price.
Some Studios are dooming themselves to failure by just putting their film in a race where its totally out classed. Seriously, they are cramming far too many mediocre films into the blockbuster season now and audiences having grown much more sophisticated and selective in their tastes and viewing habits and they won't cough up every week for a less than stellar movie.
Why the hell they didn't wait until Halloween week to release "Ghostbusters" is beyond me, it would have fit the bill perfectly then. Similarly Star Trek would have been a better release late autumn because there has been literally nothing else to see until then. "Jason Bourne" would have been a better fall/winter actioner as well.
I don't think Star Wars will ever shift from the Christmas spot now. Its just too perfect a position for it. Its got the most successfull movie franchise merchandising product lines tied directly into the appex of the years gift spending period with interest peaking at exactly the right point. And the Xmas holidays is a great time to go at least once to the cinema, so it may as well be for a Star Wars movie with the family (and if its any good repeat viewings through the miserably thin January period).

His casting was really odd since that role could've been played by any random extra. It makes me wonder if that character has some greater role to play farther down the line.

However, the movie business doesn't work with what you personally want to see.

Re: Star Wars: Episode VIII (Pre-release)

Because we never actually see von Sydow's character being killed, I think he will reemerge later. He is just "taken away" at Kylo's order.

“Kylo Ren seemed to grow before him. Rage flared behind the mask as reason gave way to fury. A lightsaber appeared in one hand, flaring to life, a barely stable crimson shaft notable for two smaller projections at the hilt: a killer’s weapon, an executioner’s fetish of choice. “So true.”
Light, refulgent and cutting, ripped across and through the figure of Lor San Tekka.”

With Lor San Tekka being a longtime Church of the Force member... and possibly Force sensitive, I wonder if he may return as a Force Ghost.

When my husband was playing the Star Wars Lego TFA game, one of the achievements he unlocked was "Lor San Tekka's Return". I don't know if that's random, or if it is another hidden clue in the game scripting kind of like "Face me, Cousin!" said by kylo Ren to Rey in Star Wars Infinity.

No way to know until we know....but it's an interesting thing to chew on.

Two things, here. The character thumbnail for Tekka says that he knows about and respects the Force, while not being Force-sensitive himself. That seems to be what the "Church of the Force" is all about. And "Lor San Tekka's Return" chronicles (loosely) his return to Jakku shortly before the events of TFA -- not his return from a mysterious fate after his confrontation with Kylo Ren.

Oh I definitely think he's dead. I just wondered if we may see him in visions or flashbacks.

Re: Star Wars: Episode VIII (Pre-release)

We didn't actually see it see it, but it was very heavily implied. We saw them facing off, we saw Kylo raise his saber, we saw him slash down, we heard the sound effect of it hitting something, we cut to Poe reacting, and for the rest of the scene there was a crumpled form where Lor had been standing, but we couldn't see how many pieces said form was comprised of. The old-school film philosophy that implied violence is pretty much as effective as actual violence, without running the risk of giving some people nightmares or traumatizing little kids (as badly, anyway).
