I really don't give a porg's butt about the water. Maybe it was imaginary, and vanished a few seconds later like the dice.
Who cares? I didn't ,until I read that post by Rian. I take a bit of an exception to somebody saying just accept what I tell you because we've got to grow the franchise. Where they take it now is irrelevant to me, I have little interest. But poke at people as I've illustrated in my last few posts and they can tear anything as subjective as an entertainment product to pieces, particularly a work of science fiction.
And theres nothing going on thats any different here to the critisism leveled at the DC universe, the failure of movies such as the live action "Ghost in the Shell" remake and "Valerian" this year. The point is it was pretty unexpected.
And there is going to be a financial cost for that to Disney because in alienating a sizable portion of the fan base that they need not have, that will have an impact. Merchandise sales took a huge hit when "The Phantom Menace" came out and took years to recover. And alot of the spending power that matters comes from the older generation of SW fans that appear most upset.
It will still make great box office as the prequels did, its hugely appealling to kids and just as many people will like it as they hated them, but the decisions made in this film have upset some and in that sense its been mismanaged. Whether its a prequel sized misjudgement to judge from whats being said we will have to wait and see. The next film could set it all to rights and we will forgive and forget (or perhaps not).
To me it doesn't matter. Any point I've raised here as a critisim doesn't matter. Its completely subjective. Most of my reading and viewing these days tends towards complex dramas and fiction anyway. Sci fi and fantasy is a break , a casual entertaining diversion and there are riches to be had as with "Game of Thrones", the "Expanse" series, the Marvel films, the novels of Joe Abercrombie and Charles Stross.
And thats really the point. Star Wars has alot of competition. Its still a remarkable sci fi franchise but all its strengths AND weaknesses depend on keeping its identity intact in an increasingly competitive market and a hugely demanding, educated and well versed fan base. And that means delivering something that keeps and makes most of them happy if possible.
