And when someone says "but the old movies still exist", when they release something that sucks, tarnishes the legacy of the original product. Tell me after watching the prequels you dont think of Darth Vader being a whiny little turd. Tell me you see it through the same eyes as you did before. Same thing with Luke. It takes away from the original movies because you see what he becomes... his sacrifice was for naught. :facepalm

On this particular point I can't agree with you.

I can honestly say with my hand on my heart that when i see Darth Vader I DO NOT think of him as a whiny little turd... since the Anakin portrayed in the Prequel s never really seemed like Vader to me at all.

This was confirmed a second time for me when I saw Vader appear again in Rogue One. Nope... still don't think of a whiny little turd.

So I do think it's entirely possible to compartmentalize things that you don't like, and not let it "tarnish the legacy of the original product"... IF you decide to do so. But that is up to each individual.

***** Freaking ******, I didn't know that this movie was so divisive even on the RPF. I freaking loved it. Ever little pixel of it.

Loved Leia Force pulling herself to the ship, the crystal foxes, the porgs, Snoke's death, Luke's bitterness, Poe's assholeness, Finn and Rose in Monte Carlo and the fancy cantina vibe, the space horses being set free, Benicio Dele Toro, the Fantasia moment with the slave/rebel kid and the broom... Loved every little thing of it.

I watched three times and every time it was freaking amazing. Really amazing.

It's such a shame that not every one had the same experience as I had. I'm so happy. Wish the rest of the world was too.

I think because its the "sequel"

Like if Vadar became a whiny Anakin

and Yoda became one with the Force.. and the Force was a Porg.. and Chewy ate him

To each their own I guess. I envy you for that ability. Same thing happened when I was a kid knowing James Earl Jones did Vaders voice. Now I think of the actor every time I hear it.

Thats a hell of a task to ask of someone, who admired a hero for taking "the high ground" and not falling to the Darkside, like his father before him.

I can compartmentalize, certain scenes.. as head scratching as they were... but to do the same with (was what a MAIN character/hero).. thats a tough one

The only way.. is to tell myself that Luke turned out just like Yoda..intimidated by the "new" world.. and hid.. until fade away

So whats your explanation for the water then ????? And Yoda is supposed to be a "Ghost". Why doesn't he help Luke fry Kylo a bit with his newly acquired power. That would have shocked Ren AND LUKE would not have had to DIE!!!! Why waste that energy burning a tree when he could have roasted Ren or even Snoke for that matter. Yoda acts like a bit of git to me.

I really don't give a porg's butt about the water. Maybe it was imaginary, and vanished a few seconds later like the dice.

IMO, the last crystal fox was heading out and noticed the people. It was not waiting for them more like just watching to see what they would do like animals do. When they started moving toward it then it jetted to the exit.

I remember it waiting multiple times..

Snoke was doing that though, bridging their minds. He wouldnt make it an illusion. And if he did, they should have showed that it disappeared. Except they didnt do that because they didnt want to foreshadow anything. #lazywriting

well you cant really say that... cause its either, a Force power or weird science (both Star Wars roots...)... neither one can be discarded.

Not like we can not care about the color of the sky on a certain planet.. but something like the water/sweat between two Force users in different locations.. in a SW movie.. that means something

This is Star Wars!!??.....it's fantasy.....as you said,...they add bits on to the Force in every movie,....Obi-Wan sat on a log beside Luke on Dagobah in RotJ......but I think this movie just pushed things into"That's not how the Force works" territory....it jars & feels off

There were literally so many screwy and ill thought out Force powers in the EU, but astral projection, something that goes as far back as the scripts from the OT, is what breaks the camels back? I just don't understand it.

sometimes a banana is just a banana.
there will be no Crystal Fox: A Star Wars Story nor will the kid at the end of this one be the main hero of episode 9
focusing on trees will obstruct your view of the forest

Also, is BB8 in the cardboard box another Kojima-related easter egg? Snake does that in Metal Gear Solid.

That might have been my favorite part of the movie. He was doing his impression of an MSE-6 "mouse droid", and even beeped out his own version of the sound.

If Snoke was powerful enough to mind meld Rey And Ben, why not just reach into Luke's mind and kill him? Seems like a whole lot of effort for nothing.

The whole "mind meld" thing confuses me.. why mind meld Kylo to Rey?,,, that was his demise..brought those 2 much closer

Who cares? I didn't ,until I read that post by Rian. I take a bit of an exception to somebody saying just accept what I tell you because we've got to grow the franchise. Where they take it now is irrelevant to me, I have little interest. But poke at people as I've illustrated in my last few posts and they can tear anything as subjective as an entertainment product to pieces, particularly a work of science fiction.
And theres nothing going on thats any different here to the critisism leveled at the DC universe, the failure of movies such as the live action "Ghost in the Shell" remake and "Valerian" this year. The point is it was pretty unexpected.
And there is going to be a financial cost for that to Disney because in alienating a sizable portion of the fan base that they need not have, that will have an impact. Merchandise sales took a huge hit when "The Phantom Menace" came out and took years to recover. And alot of the spending power that matters comes from the older generation of SW fans that appear most upset.
It will still make great box office as the prequels did, its hugely appealling to kids and just as many people will like it as they hated them, but the decisions made in this film have upset some and in that sense its been mismanaged. Whether its a prequel sized misjudgement to judge from whats being said we will have to wait and see. The next film could set it all to rights and we will forgive and forget (or perhaps not).
To me it doesn't matter. Any point I've raised here as a critisim doesn't matter. Its completely subjective. Most of my reading and viewing these days tends towards complex dramas and fiction anyway. Sci fi and fantasy is a break , a casual entertaining diversion and there are riches to be had as with "Game of Thrones", the "Expanse" series, the Marvel films, the novels of Joe Abercrombie and Charles Stross.
And thats really the point. Star Wars has alot of competition. Its still a remarkable sci fi franchise but all its strengths AND weaknesses depend on keeping its identity intact in an increasingly competitive market and a hugely demanding, educated and well versed fan base. And that means delivering something that keeps and makes most of them happy if possible.
