Star Wars: The Force Awakens (Pre-release)

Re: Star Wars Episode VII

If you take JJ Abram's ST reboot as a stand alone film it was well directed IMO. I think he will approach SW with a fresh eye... for me as long as GL isn't directing then I'm good. :D

Re: Star Wars Episode VII

If true, and it's yet to be proven, I guess any trek 3 won't involve him or won't be out til 2017/8 at the earliest. Can't work both simultaneously - at least i'd hope that'd be a stipulation in the SW contract.

I guess now they can use genesis to revive the emperor though :)

Drew Struzan approached by Disney to illustrate new posters for the upcoming Star Wars Trilogy - Ain't It Cool News

I am glad he hasn't totally retired from doing movies posters. Besides doing posters for some classic movies for Mondo, I didn't think he would ever return to do posters for modern films. But that is probably more to do with the fact that no studios go for painted posters these days.

Drew posted about this today on Facebook and denied the news stories:

"UPDATE January 24, 2013 5:44 pm EST:*Drew Struzan took to Facebook to clarify his comments in our interview. He said, “Misunderstood…A couple of friends at Disney were fantasizing about the new STAR WARS movies.

“Disney” has said nothing to me and I expect nothing. That a couple of friends were wishing is only an expression of the hope that many are sharing but says nothing regarding the Studio itself. Even if ‘they’ did ask, which Disney has not, I’d rather leave the new films to the next generation to interpret. I’ve had my time and they were exceptional blessings for which I will forever be grateful.

Tomorrow is a new day…drew"

Re: Star Wars Episode VII

While I'm not entirely excited about the idea of JJ directing Ep. VII I think it might not be as bad as Trek '09 so long as Ep. VII is a sequel and not a reboot sold as a sequel and he has a good script to work with.

Re: Star Wars Episode VII

Can't believe all the disdain towards Abrams. After I saw his Star Trek reboot, I walked out saying "I wish the prequels had been that damn good". Outside of Joss Whedon I can't think of a better "geek" to tackle the SW universe and I'll gladly come back to this thread and eat crow in 2015 if he doesn't deliver an awesome movie!!!

Honestly, this just seems like a case of SW fans needing something to complain about. Imagine that.

Re: Star Wars Episode VII

That guy can't write a score for crap. Seriously, the Trek '09 score was a joke.
His score to the Pixar films and Speed Racer are top notch, including that closing credits music from Cloverfield. The opening minutes of Up is emotionally captivating not just cause of the animation but due to the beautiful composition by Giacchino.

As for other directors, Joss Whedon indeed would have been a great choice.

Re: Star Wars Episode VII

Good God I hope not... Or at least if he does, I hope he writes in Williams' style. That guy can't write a score for crap. Seriously, the Trek '09 score was a joke.

On some movie sites this is an unpopular opinion but I'm right there with you. On first viewing of the new Trek film I kind of liked the score, but now I can't even watch the flick because the repetitiveness of the score grates.

Giacchino is only considered a great composer because there's now one of Williams' stature composing today.

Re: Star Wars Episode VII

My only issue is that I personally don't want a reboot of STAR WARS. I want new STAR WARS to be like old STAR WARS, if you get my meaning. JJ was great to reboot STAR TREK and he applied his specific aesthetic to it and that was fine and worked well. What I don't want is to be watching STAR WARS and have it scream "Directed by JJ Abrams", and I don;t just mean the lens flare. I want don't want to be even thinking "Gee this looks like a JJ Abrams film" while I am watching it. I hope he can reign some of that in.

I think he'll be able to give it the right feel. This is a guy who has gone on record many times saying how SW was the biggest influence on his career. In fact, I was shocked when he took the Star Trek gig because of how much he loved SW and how he didn't even like Trek growing up. If he can do that good of a job with a property he doesn't have any emotional attachment to imagine what he'll do with something he really cares about.

Fingers crossed. I really liked STAR TREK and thought Super 8 was very good but I thought Cloverfield was way over rated..as was LOST.

Re: Star Wars Episode VII

I thought LOST was good for 2 seasons and after that it was a mess. I think Abrams actually left after season 1 and put the show in the hands of Lindelof and Cuse who dug a hole they could never figure their way out of.

Re: Star Wars Episode VII

I'm not a fan of Lindelof. LOST should have been one season. A mini series. Abrams does have talent. I can't argue that. I just hope that he does Star Wars right. He knows how to get great performances from his actors. I just hope the script is good. It ultimately comes down to that. Bad script, bad movie. Good script, good movie.
