Star Wars: The Force Awakens (Pre-release)

Better idea: act like an adult and post spoilers in the spoiler thread? :D

The problem with that is that the definition of a spoiler tends to bay from person to person, for some even things revealed in a trailer is a spoiler, to others it's only major plot points like Ben dies in ANH, or Vader telling Luke he's his father in Empire .

They suggest that it cost $200 million to make the movie. That doesn't seem to cover the promotion of the fim.... which often seems to double production cost; but, that also doesn't seem to cover the prices paid for licensing --- which is most likely a pretty penny and helps with marketing (ie, how many commercials are from licensees vs. actual commercials for the film?)

$200 production cost sounds more plausible. I didn't think this was looking like a $400 movie.

But yeah, you'd think a new SW trilogy opener would pay for itself before it opens.

For the first time in most of 40 years, a new SW movie probably won't be breaking any new ground SFX-wise.

JJ was the one who floated the $400M number during his interview on Howard Stern.

IMdb and other sources say it was a $200 million budget - promotional costs are often around the same amount - if that holds true, the overall cost would be around $400 million.

I don't disagree. But, in this case we do have a spoiler thread for that kind of talk - and we do have people in here making complaints about the generous sprinkling of spoilers in this thread. Sometimes it's subtle little things - other times it's more blatant and obvious. Sometimes, you get a link posted and fair warning.

In two weeks it will be a moot point.

you know, sooner or later Disney is going to make all their money for what they paid for Star Wars. So, basically its like Disney got SW for free and with tons of profit being made.

How did they get $400+ into this first movie? Was that including all the marketing? The pre-production work on the next two, the rest of the francise in general, etc?
Kevin Smith discussed this (sort of) in an interview I read two or three years ago. He said that the number the general public hears about--i.e., "It cost $2 million to make"--normally doesn't include marketing, promotion, distribution costs, and/or whatever other costs that are not directly associated with the production of the movie. He added that the studios don't consider a movie to be a "success" unless/until it generates three times that cost in profits. So, if that's true, if The Force Awakens cost $200 million to make, Disney and Lucasfilm won't call it a success until it brings in $600 million.
